Two months after Gene Hackman’s death, his official cause of death has been revealed. Gene passed away on February 26 at age 95 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his 65-year-old wife Betsy Arakawa.

According to Fox News, Gene had acetone levels of 5.3 mg/dL and a “history of congestive heart failure” and a “bi-ventricular pacemaker” installed in April 2019. The medical examiner also noted that he had acetone levels of 5.3 mg/dL, with normal levels only rising to 0.3 mg/dL.
The toxicology report concluded that Gene’s levels may have suggested a prolonged fasting as well as a result of diabetic- and fasting-induced ketoacidosis as well as a metabolite.
After the actor’s family had a clear understanding that a gas leak was likely to blame for his and Betsy’s deaths, examinations also revealed that carbon monoxide levels were in normal range. The examiner confirmed Gene didn’t pass away from the same illness that caused his wife, the hantavirus, despite ruling out carbon monoxide poisoning.
Prior research had established that Betsy had died from the rare condition hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which was spread through rodent urine and droppings.
