Gene, who had a number of significant Hollywood roles throughout his acting career, retired in 2004 after being last seen looking frail in a elusive outing in March of last year.
Gene lied about his age when he enlisted in the army at the age of 16 and was born in 1930. The actor’s career included two Oscar nominations and two BAFTAs, and he was best known for playing the villainous Lex Luther.
He scooped the best actor Oscar in 1972 for or his role as Detective Jimmy” Popeye “Doyle in The French Connection. Gene also won an Oscar in the best supporting actor category for his part in 1992 Western Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood.

Gene also received numerous awards for his acting work, including two Golden Globes and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Gene stopped acting in 2004 as a result of his doctor’s treatment.
He led a quiet life in his later years and hardly ever gave interviews after retiring. However, he did discuss his retirement in 2008, telling Reuters:” I haven’t held a press conference to announce retirement, but yes, I’m not going to act any longer. I’ve been told not to say that for the past few years in case a truly wonderful aspect arises, but I really don’t want to do it any longer.
He continued to talk about his passion for writing books, revealing that he enjoyed the solitude of it. Genevieve once said, “It’s more private and I feel more in charge of what I’m trying to say and do. Because you work with a lot of people and everyone has a point, there is always a compromise between acting and film. … I don’t know that I like it better than acting, it’s just different. I find it relaxing and comforting. “
He later admitted in an interview with GQ that he would only “come out of retirement” if he could produce “two Marine Corps documentaries called The Unknown Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima and We, The Marines.”
