Gene Hackman police statement in full as cops give major update on investigation

A press conference was held by law enforcement to investigate Gene Hackman’s death and his wife Betsy Arakawa.

In their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home earlier this week, Gene, an Oscar-winning actor, and his wife Betsy, 65, were discovered dead alongside one of their dogs. A caretaker raised the alarm, so police were called to the property. Later, the distressing 911 call was made public.

The circumstances surrounding the couple’s death, which is thought to have occurred nine days before their bodies were discovered, are still undetermined, and a police investigation is ongoing. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated in an update on the investigation, “Good afternoon everyone, I’m the Sheriff for Santa Fe County New Mexico.” At around 1.45 p.m. on February 26, 2025, Santa Fe County Sheriffs deputies were called to 1425 Old Sunset Trail where Gene Hackman, 95, his wife Betsy Arkawa, 65, and their dog were discovered dead. A resident who arrived to do maintenance on the property called neighbourhood security to request a welfare check after receiving no response. Then Security opened a window to reveal Mr. Hackman and Ms. Arakawa unresponsive and called 911 after they were observed outside the home.

Deputies arrived and gained access to a deceased Ms. Arakawa residence. They continued to search the home, and they discovered Mr. Hackman, who was also deceased, in a different area of the residence. Two other dogs, who appeared to be healthy, were also discovered dead on the property, along with a German Shepherd. The criminal investigations division was then informed as soon as the scene was secured. There was concern for scene safety because of the unusual circumstances of two defendants [sic].

“Cost of the investigation was to conduct a carbon monoxide test on the scene with New Mexico gas company.” A search warrant was issued and carried out on the residence about 9.30pm after the scene was determined safe. Two green cell phones, two bottles of medication, and one bottle of over-the-counter Tylenol were now found at the residence, according to this search warrant. The Santa Fe Animal Control Division collaborated with family to protect the two dogs, he continued.
