With victory over Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus in a match-tiedbreak, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool won the men’s doubles title at Queen’s for the first time in the Open era.
With a victory of 6-3, 6-7, 5-7, 10-6, Cash and Glasspool won their fourth ATP Tour title since joining forces last year.
Cash remarked, “It’s been a fantastic year so far.” It’s really nice to kick off the grassy season strong. We can hopefully continue our successful run at Wimbledon.
Before Croatia’s Mektic and New Zealand’s Venus fought back to secure the tie-break, which they won by a set that the Britons had already won.
However, in the tie-break, which was played to 10 points, Cash and Glasspool received an early mini-break before breaking once more before clinching the victory on their first match point, which was won by the latter.
“I think we’ve been a really strong team this year, and I hope Julian can keep making these tie-breaks when he serves and the ball doesn’t come back,” said Glasspool, who finished second in this competition in 2022 behind Finland’s Harri Heliovaara.
After reaching the final in “s-Hertogenbosch last weekend,” the pair’s successful two weeks on grass include a couple of weeks on grass. They will then continue their warm-up for Wimbledon by taking on Eastbourne next week.
Andy Murray, Neal Skupski, and Jamie Murray are the only other British players to have won the doubles title at this tournament (since tennis first became a sport in 1968), along with David and John Lloyd, who were the 1978 winners.
Olivia Nicholls and her Slovak partner Tereza Mihalikova won the Berlin Open women’s title, which was more impressive for British doubles success on grass in Germany.
