After winning the French Open title against Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, Coco Gauff claimed a maiden trophy was “one I really wanted.”

The 21-year-old defeated the world number one at Roland Garros in a battle of 6-7 (5 / 7), 6-2, and 6-4.

According to American star Gauff, “I really wanted this because I do believe this was one of the tournaments that I thought I had the best chance of winning,” he said.

So I just started to feel regrets and other emotions if I didn’t complete my career and didn’t complete at least one of them.

I just had to go for it and make my best effort to get through the match today when I was playing Aryna. ”

Gauff was devastated when she lost to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 French Open final as a teenager and; had made it to the quarter-finals in Paris at least once in the previous four years.

The world number two, who also defeated Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final, also came back from a set down to defeat Sabalenka in the final.

I recall watching her closely as the anthem was played, and I was also quite emotional when the Polish anthem was played. I thought, “Wow, this is such a cool moment.”

I kind of had those reflections when the (USA) anthem was playing today. ”

Not a day for great tennis

Gauff is the first woman to defeat a world number one in a set-dancing final since 2005’s Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport at Wimbledon.

After losing final matches to Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini in both the Madrid and Italian Opens, respectively, she won her first title since winning the WTA Finals trophy last year.

The wind swayed after the roof was opened just before the start of the match, according to Sabalenka, who described the situation as “terrible.”

Sincerely, Gauff remarked, “It wasn’t a day for great tennis.”

There are too many people out there today who could play great tennis, but it’s both a sport and an outdoor activity. ”

Spike Lee, an ardent New York Knicks fan, was present to celebrate with Gauff after her victory, as did American filmmaker Spike Lee.

In reference to the Knicks’ defeat by the Indiana Pacers last weekend in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, she said, “I wanted to tell him, I had to do it. Even though the Knicks didn’t win, I gave him something to cheer for.”

In a 77-minute first set with eight breaks, both players struggled with serve especially.

If Swiatek had not ended the Pole’s title defense in the semi-finals, Sabalenka claimed that she would have defeated Gauff, but the actual champion refrained from believing that.

I disagree with that, I think. Gauff, who defeated Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 in the Madrid semi-finals last month, looked at the trophy she was holding next to her.

Iga and Iga were not in any doubt when I played her last time, but I did so in straight sets.

Because anything can actually happen, I don’t believe that is fair. ”
