Doug Martin, a former running back for the National Football League (NFL), passed away at the age of 36 while being held by police in California.
The former American football player, who played for teams including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died on Saturday after engaging in an alleged home break-in and a fight with officers, according to the Oakland Police Department.
A brief fight broke out while the detained person was being detained, according to the department, adding that Martin lost consciousness and later passed away.
Doug Martin passed away on Saturday morning, his family reported to US media. “It is with great sadness to inform you all. The family requested “privacy at this time.”
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Martin’s former team, expressed shock over the “sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin” in a statement.
The Buccaneers added that Doug had a lasting impact on our franchise from his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his numerous Pro Bowl victories throughout his six seasons in the league.
In the 2012 NFL Draft, Martin was the first-round pick for Tampa Bay and was born in Oakland, California. Martin ran for 1, 454 yards and scored 11 touchdowns in his first season.
Martin, who was 5′ 9″ (1.75m) tall for a professional player, was nicknamed the “Muscle Hamster” because of how strong he was during six of his seven NFL seasons with the Buccaneers.
He was also suspended for four games in 2016 for violating the NFL’s drug policy after testing positive for a banned substance. He also struggled with injuries. He thanked himself and entered a drug rehab facility.
