BBCRoly Howard’s death, which took over the Merseyside club Marine AFC for 33 years, set a record for the longest-serving football manager at the time, has received tributes.
Between August 1972 and April 2005, he served as the club’s groundsman and he led the Crosby-based team for 1, 975 games.
Following Howard’s 90th birthday, the current team, which plays in the National League, held a minute’s silence before Saturday’s game.
He won 15 league titles and 15 cups while playing for the club.
Marine FCHoward worked as a window cleaner for clients including former Liverpool manager Sir Kenny Dalglish in addition to his club work.
The then-70-year-old said: “When you are doing it, it doesn’t feel like that long. But when you consider it, you wonder where the time has gone, much like life itself.
After seeing the then-Stockport manager Eric Webster mow the grass at their property, he was inspired to work for the Marines.
When I inquired about his actions, he replied, “They never sack the groundsman.” So I also maintained the ground for five or six years.
As the longest-serving football manager, he was able to hold his own place in the Guinness World Records.
