After more than 80 000 people were evacuated from their homes this week, according to state media, six people have died from flooding in Guizhou province, in China.
As floodwaters from a province upstream roared into the mountainous region, with the anticipated landfall of a tropical cyclone later on Thursday compounding the risk of disaster, towns and villages by a significant river in China’s Guangxi lay half-submerged.
The Liu River, which originates in Guizhou province, is one of the rivers that the flooding that affected the counties of Rongjiang and Congjiang in Guizhou province on Tuesday has impacted other areas of southwest China, including rural areas in Guangxi.
Since Tuesday, “exceptionally large floods” have been sweeping through Guizhou’s Rongjiang county, according to state broadcaster CCTV on Thursday.
Extreme weather is common in China this summer.
Beijing, one of its hottest days of the year, received the second-highest heat warning this week from the authorities.
