After replacing the Chinese Taipei emblem with the Taiwan flag, the organizers of the World Figure Skating Championships apologised.

Taiwan competes as Chinese Taipei at most international sporting events to protect its sovereignty from China, which claims Taiwan is a democratically administered island.

Taiwan’s government, however, rejects China’s claims to sovereignty.

When Li Yu-Hsiang was introduced ahead of the short program in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, the Taiwan flag was projected behind him on a video screen.

Prior to the pairs event later in the day, a public address announcer at the venue read out the International Skating Union’s (ISU) apology.

The ISU apologizes in full for Chinese Taipei’s display of the incorrect flag at today’s ISU World Figure Skating Championships event.

We fully comprehend this error’s delicate nature and regret any offence or confusion it might have caused.
