Starting in 2028, Fifa will launch a Women’s Club World Cup competition.
The organization’s governing body will also hold its first global women’s football competition starting in 2026, the Women’s Champions Cup.
Six teams will compete in the Champions Cup, with the exception of the Club World Cup, which will take place annually.
The Fifa Council on Wednesday afternoon officially approved plans to start a 16-team Club World Cup, which was originally scheduled to begin in 2026.
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, stated: “Women’s football has reached new heights at the national-team level, and now it’s time for global competitions that showcase the best clubs from around the world.
What will the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup look like?
16 teams from all six confederations will compete in the Club World Cup, including Oceania, Africa, Asia, North America, South America, and Europe.
Thirteen clubs, including five from Europe, will be guaranteed entry into the competition, and three more spots will be awarded through a “play-in” route, which will allow the winners of one-legged knockout matches to advance.
A group-stage round, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final will be the only events that will be part of the competition once more. All games will take place in locations that are not offensive.
Fifa will also discuss prize money and potential special changes to transfer windows if the competition coincides with the Club World Cup, as well as the host’s appointment and venue selection.
Clubs hoping to compete in the competition are also likely to have minimum standards introduced.
Fifa wants to encourage the expansion of women’s club football, which will lead to more competitive matches on a global scale.
In response to ongoing concerns about the welfare of players, Fifa’s sources claim that the game’s launch was delayed so that more time could be spent discussing the match schedule.
