The Federal Government has opposed eliminating Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) in favor of a 12-year basic education model.  ,
This is based on a statement from Folashade Boriowo, the director of press for the Federal Ministry of Education.
At the NCE (Extraordinary National Council on Education) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Boriowo claimed that Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, made the statement without making an immediate policy change.

“Contemptful reports have been drawn to the Federal Ministry of Education, which claim the government has replaced the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) with a new 12-year, uninterrupted basic education model. The statement made on Friday read, “We wish to categorically state that this is not true.”
“The proposal seeks to migrate to 12 years of compulsory education while retaining the current 6-3-3 structure”, the ministry said.
According to Boriowo, the proposal aims to eliminate the barriers between JSS and SSS.
This will allow students to transition smoothly without having to go through an external assessment at that point, it said. However, this is still a subject of consultation and deliberation”.
