Raul Fernandez of Spain won the MotoGP race in Australia, earning his first victory.

The 24-year-old Trackhouse rider swept past Fabio di Giannantonio, a Ducati rider from VR46, to take the top spot in the podium.

Marco Bezzecchi, Fernandez’s Aprilia stablemate, finished third in the 13-lap sprint on Saturday.

By lap 10, Fernandez had already taken the lead as the race progressed, but Bezzecchi’s expected counterattack, which required him to serve two lengthy lap penalties, failed.

Marc Marquez, who won his seventh MotoGP title in Japan last month, was sidelined for the rest of the season.

Marquez had shoulder surgery after colliding with Bezzecchi in Indonesia, which is expected to keep him out of action for up to 16 weeks.

In his 76th grand prix, Fernandez won the title, but Marquez’s brother Alex placed fourth overall, just ahead of him.
