The beloved crime drama first premiered on television in 2013 and is considered one of the best British TV shows of all time — and it’s finally coming to Netflix in just a few days
When it first hit our screens back in 2013 critics and fans alike couldn’t get enough of this crime drama.
Described as “simply a knockout” by one critic, Broadchurch was written and crafted by Chris Chibnall and aired on ITV across three series from 2013 to 2017. Now, the cherished British ‘whodunnit’ mystery is arriving on Netflix in just a few days.
Landing on the streaming platform on November 18, Broadchurch features David Tennant and Olivia Colman in leading roles as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy and Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller. Alongside them forming an impressive ensemble cast are Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Arthur Darvill, Carolyn Pickles, Jonathan Bailey, Matthew Gravelle, Charlotte Beaumont and Adam Wilson — all of whom featured throughout the programme’s three series.
Located in the imaginary English seaside town of Broadchurch on the Dorset coastline, the acclaimed series initially debuted in April 2013 and earned seven BAFTA nominations for its opening series alone. Colman secured the Best Actress BAFTA for her performance as Ellie, whilst David Bradley claimed the prize for Best Supporting Actor and the programme took home the prestigious Best Drama Series accolade. The show also claimed a Peabody Award for its inaugural series, reports the Express.
The British crime drama boasts a staggering average rating of 92 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes across its three seasons, earning widespread praise from both critics and audiences. One reviewer said: “It’s among the best detective shows – and perhaps even among the best dramas — in several years. It will break your heart and keep you guessing all the way through.”
Another critic, in a rave review of the debut series, wrote: “Broadchurch is based on a generic premise, but nothing feels stale. With depth and passion, Colman brings her character’s profound questioning to vibrant life.” A third reviewer commented on the series’ second season: “After the brilliant first season of Broadchurch came to a devastating conclusion, I didn’t think a second season was necessary. I was wrong.”
Praising both leading stars, one critic noted: “Most viewers will probably tune in to see Tennant in a dark and unfamiliar role, but as great as he is in the role, the real standout performance comes from Olivia Colman.” Viewer reviews were equally outstanding, with one fan writing: “Absolutely amazing. The story was absolutely thrilling and had me completely hooked the whole way through. All the actors were absolutely class, especially David Tennant and Olivia Coleman. This is a must watch.”
One viewer wrote a glowing review, saying: “Incredible cinematography. Compelling, emotional acting. Beautiful setting. The story and characters are so real that it’s impossible not to binge. I was enthralled for the entire season, even though the show has no gore, no shootouts, and none of the over the top sensational graphics that are so often seen in crime thrillers.” Meanwhile, another fan wrote: “An absolute revelation, it’s something I never quite expected. Broadchurch is deep, analytical, dark and… well, unforgettable. Loved it.”
