Despite a disappointing defeat in the first Test, England refused to allow their first-choice batters to practice for the Ashes tour match in Canberra.

The tourists’ two-day defeat in Perth resulted in an 11-day break before the second Test, which was a day-nightly affair in Brisbane.

Players could play in the country’s capital on Saturday and Sunday during the extended break, which also included the possibility of playing in the England Lions’ two-day pink-ball game against a Prime Minister’s XI.

Only Josh Tongue, Matthew Potts, and Jacob Bethell, a trio who weren’t in the first Test, will join the Lions in leaving the Ashes squad.

Visitations to Australia are a custom when playing against the Prime Minister’s XI.

England have participated in previous Ashes tours, but this one was canceled due to a potential tense turn-around in Brisbane if the Perth Test was over for all five days and because there have been no more tour games since Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum have taken over in 2022.

It takes less than four hours to fly from Perth, on the west coast, to Canberra, east. Flying from Brisbane’s capital city to the north takes less than two hours.

The idea of sending at least the batters to Canberra seemed reasonable given that the first Test was completed so quickly, which was the first two-day Ashes Test since 1921.

In Perth, England were bowled out twice within 67.3% of the match. England hasn’t lost a Test since 1904, nor has it survived so few deliveries.

In both innings, both Stokes and former Ashes Test opener Joe Root and their partners failed to record double figures, and Zak Crawley was only the fourth to do so.

Additionally, England would have had to play a rare day-night Test in the Lions match, which would have included time played with the pink ball.

Australia have won 13 of their previous day-night games, while England have lost five of their seven. The best pink-ball bowler in the world is paceman Mitchell Starc, who took ten wickets in Perth, Australia.

In contrast to Brydon Carse’s only appearance in a first-class game against a pink ball, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and pace bowler Gus Atkinson have never played a first-class game with a pink ball.

Stokes resolutely refused to change their plans and send players to Canberra after the first Test.

He told Test Match Special, “I’ve been asked this question a lot, that’s how it was done a long time ago.” Every day when we have the chance to work on our game, we prepare incredibly well and work incredibly hard.

We’ve done it because we’re confident that the preparation we put in is effective.

We just need to figure out the pros and cons, Coach McCullum said, “We just need to figure it out.” We’re not currently married to any positions, but we’ll figure things out in a few days.

McCullum added that he was “sure a batter could play in Canberra if he wanted to.”

England will arrive in Brisbane on Wednesday, with no scheduled training until Monday. On Sunday, there might be an additional training session.

Former captain Michael Vaughan said it would be ” amateurish” to miss the chance to play in Canberra on Saturday.

What harm does it cause when the pink ball is positioned under lights during two days of cricket? “Vaughan spoke on the podcast Test Match Special.

“I can’t be so old-fashioned to suggest that playing cricket might make them feel a little better,” I say.
