England or Spain? Brown-Finnis’ Euro 2025 final prediction

England or Spain? Brown-Finnis’ Euro 2025 final prediction

  • 21 Responses

Will Euro 2025 see the holders of the title retake the title or a first for the reigning champions? There is just one more game to play.

Rachel Brown-Finnis, a BBC Sport football expert, correctly supported England and Spain to reach Sunday’s final at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, maintaining her 100% record in the knockout stages.

Brown-Finnis has predicted the outcome of all 31 of the 31 games against BBC readers so far, and he has been accurate with 22 of them (73%).

Your overall score is 20/30 (66%), which is correct. You also made the right decision regarding both semi-finals.

Out of a total of 100 000 predictions made by BBC readers for both games, 80% of them predicted that Spain would defeat Italy.

In the end, who will you support? Below, you can make your own predictions.

Final

England will be able to play much better than they did against Sweden and Italy in their quarter-final and semi-final victories, and success on Sunday will depend on them bringing their best game from the opening second to the last.

They must be absolutely watertight at the back against a team as good as Spain to avoid any defensive errors.

In their semi-final against Spain, Germany won the game brilliantly, and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger had a fantastic tournament. But she made one mistake at the very end, and that was all that was required.

Spain can profit from any error because they have so many top players, including Aitana Bonmati, who is undoubtedly their best.

However, England won’t be afraid of them. That is unlikely to occur.

Defying the world champions may seem like a challenging task from the outside. Spain won the last two games, defeating the Lionesses, in the 2023 World Cup final, and they now have won ten games in a row, including the last one in June when they last faced off against England.

However, the Lionesses defeated Spain last at Wembley in February. A recent result like this to draw on for reassurance is a big plus for a situation like this.

Germany demonstrated how to treat England?

In terms of seeing a system that will allow them to attack their opponents, watching the semi-final match between Germany and Spain would be the best way for England to prepare.

Germany not only had a lot of chances but was well organized at the back. England must do the same to squeeze Spain, but they must also be more diplomatic when given the chance to win.

Spain plays a high line at the back, allowing you to hurt them with quick attacks and moving in behind them, which is quite obvious.

You can see how quickly Alessia Russo makes quick forward runs while Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp play a key role for the Lionesses.

In penalty shootouts or open play, goalkeepers frequently become the players who decide the tightest of matches, so Hampton’s overall performance is likely to be crucial if England are to win. As we’ve already seen, this is true of goalkeepers.

She has done a fantastic job of holding her hands and feet at these Euros so far. Hampton has also won over her team and appears to be gaining confidence from each game.

I would support Hampton in every way if it came to her and Cata Coll from Spain.

I want to see Coll tested because I don’t believe there has been much of it in Switzerland so far. Spain hasn’t put themselves under too much pressure in any of their games.

The verdict ?

I’ve already predicted that England will win Euro 2025, but I’m not changing my mind right now.

They have also endured the tournament, so I haven’t just been backing them. Since their opening group game against France, they have essentially been playing knockout football, but they have always had the mindset to fix any issue they have encountered.

Although their progress hasn’t been particularly straightforward, Sarina Wiegman has found a way to win, and I think she will as well do it for Spain.

The Lionesses will win by one goal, of course, because the two teams will have a lot of competition, of course.

After going through the quarter-finals and the semi-finals without penalty, I can see them accomplishing their goal in 90 minutes.
