Ellen DeGeneres says she’s staying in the UK ‘for good’ after confirming she left the US because of President Donald Trump. The 67-year-old currently lives in the Cotswolds with her wife Portia de Rossi, 52, after relocating to England in 2024.

Trump won the presidency for a second time in November of that year and was inaugurated in January 2025. Originally the couple planned to split their time between the UK and their home in Montecito, California – where high profile celebrities like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Oprah and Gwyneth Paltrow – also live.

However, Ellen and Portia made the decision to permanently reside in the UK a day after learning that Trump had been re-elected. And the couple, who tied the knot in 2008, are considering moving back home after being told that some parts of America might have a gay marriage ban.

The comedian and presenter was reportedly asked by broadcaster Richard Bacon if she had moved because of Donald Trump in a new interview at the Everyman theatre in Cheltenham. “Yes”, she replied.

She continued, “We arrived the day before the election and received numerous texts from friends expressing their grief.” And I said, “He got in.” And we are like, “We’re staying here,” we say.

Ellen continued to describe how life in the UK was “just better.” Ellen has been sharing images of her new rural life on social media, including her “house sheep,” which have since been sold because they kept escaping.

It’s absolutely beautiful, she said. Simply put, we don’t typically observe this beauty. Everything you see is charming, and it’s just a simpler way of life. The towns, the towns, the architecture.

” It’s clean. The treatment of animals is handled in a way that only makes things better, and the people are polite. I simply adore this place.

“We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time. But I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”

Ellen mentioned how dangerous same-sex unions are in the US, saying, “The Baptist Church in America is trying to stop gay marriage.

They are actually attempting to stop it from occurring in the future and possibly reverse it. We’re already considering it, and Portia and I will get married here if they do so.

“I wish we were in a place where being who they are wasn’t scary.” I’d like to have a society where everyone can accept their differences. So, I don’t believe it’s difficult to say that we have made significant progress until we are there.
