World 200-meter freestyle champion William Ellard broke his own world record to win the event’s opening competition of the Singapore World Para-swimming Championships.
The 19-year-old improved his pace in Singapore by winning the race in 1:51.08. He set the record for his first Paralympics at Paris 2024 with a time of one minute 51.30 seconds.
Ellard expressed satisfaction with the achievement but desired to move more quickly.
He continued, “I feel really good, but I was hoping to go a little faster, maybe 1: 50.00 or 1: 49.00.” “I think I left too quickly, and it got to me,” I thought. Instead of the swim itself, I was thinking about the time.
On day one, Great Britain won eight more medals, including two golds.
In the women’s 200-meter freestyle S14, Poppy Maskill won her first individual world title, and Louise Fiddes came in third.
Brock Whiston was the only British competitor in the 400-meter freestyle S8 competition, and Alice Tai drew the win.
Iona Winnifrith, 14, won bronze in the women’s 200-meter individual medley SM7, while Ellie Challis, 14, earned the 12th world championship medal of her career with a second-placed finish in the women’s 50m breaststroke SB2.
Great Britain completed day one with another double podium, this time in the women’s 100-meter backstroke S12.
