EFL investigating Shrewsbury v Wrexham crowd incidents
The English Football League is looking into crowd disturbances that occurred on Thursday during Wrexham’s League One game against Shrewsbury Town.
In the second half of the match at The Croud Meadow, Stewards set up a barricade to stop Shrewsbury’s supporters from throwing balls in front of the Croud Meadow’s fans.
As a result, McClean’s derogatory comments about Shrewsbury on his Instagram account following Wrexham’s 2-1 defeat caused play to briefly behalted, with footage showing objects being thrown from the stands in his direction.
The post was later deleted.
Speaking to Sky Sports about the incident involving McClean, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said: “He’s fine. Where he goes, James is accustomed to it.
Fans “get on his back home and away, and sometimes it can be tough and spill over,” he said.
Wrexham AFC are aware of the crowd-incidents that occurred at Shrewsbury Town and Wrexham AFC on Thursday, according to a subsequent statement from the club. The EFL is currently looking into the incident.
At this point, we won’t be commenting.
The Football Association (FA) is reportedly looking into the situation. Shrewsbury have been asked for comment.
In 2023, winger McClean – who predominantly operates at wing-back for Wrexham – revealed he is autistic.
McClean’s youngest daughter is autistic and her diagnosis led to the footballer having his own test, called an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessment.
