Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo has ordered a full investigation into the incident after condemning the killing of some people in the state’s Uromi region.

On suspicion of being criminals, vigilante members allegedly killed the victims, who are alleged to be travelers, on Thursday at the state’s Esan North East Local Government Area’s headquarters.

However, Okpebholo, who was present in the area a day after the incident, called it “barbaric.”

The Governor directed the State Police Command and other security agencies to launch thorough and swift investigations into the matter and to charge those who found fault with it. Following his principal’s visit to Uromi, the governor’s spokesman Fred Itua said in a statement on Friday that he also charged the community to cooperate with the security agencies to find the culprits.

Governor Okpebholo also praised community leaders for halting tensions and handling the situation with restraint, particularly the Arewa community leaders in the area.

The victims’ justice was promised by the governor.

The statement read, “The Governor stated that there is no excuse for the vigilante members to violate the law without using statutory law enforcement.”

Kwankwaso and Atiku Condemn Incident

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former governor of Kano State Rabiu Kwankwaso both express condolences for the incident.

Atiku expressed his sadness over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones.

The former vice president wrote on his X account that “this unfortunate incident calls for a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation to uncover and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.” I urge the authorities to act quickly and decisively to stop jungle justice from happening again. “The protection of innocent lives must remain paramount. To restore public confidence in our security institutions, justice must be done as well as witnessing it.

The killing is “harrowing” and “a further depressing reminder of the cruelty of jungle justice,” says Kwankwaso.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate for president demanded that the government launch a “full-scale investigation into this sad incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
