As a result of a contentious seating arrangement dispute between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and the senate leadership, tensions erupted during plenary on Monday.

Senator Natasha’s seat was moved upon the start of the session, but she objected.

Senator Tahir Monguno, the chief whip, cited sections of the Senate rule book as supporting the seat reassignment.

Monguno claimed that the adjustments were necessary to accommodate shifts caused by opposition members’ transitions to the majority wing. The changes, he argued, are within the constitutional prerogative of the Senate President.

Senator Monguno added that violating the new seating arrangement could result in penalties, including the possibility of being denied access to Senate floor discussions.

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, upheld this position. Senator Natasha was denied recognition when she raised her hand to speak, though because she had been given the opportunity to speak from her newly assigned seat.

Refusing to back down, Senator Natasha raised her voice in protest, directly confronting the Senate President.

“I don’t care if I am silenced. I don’t worry about you. You have denied me my privilege”, the Kogi lawmaker said.
