Diaz left out of Milan game over move speculation

Due to rumors surrounding a move for the Colombian forward, Liverpool manager Arne Slot claimed Luis Diaz was excluded from the friendly defeat against Milan AC.

Bayern Munich made a £58 million opening offer to Diaz earlier this month, but the Premier League champions rejected it. Diaz’s contract expires in the summer of 2027.

Slot claimed Diaz was injured, but Slot confirmed that he was omitted “due to speculation on his future,” despite Slot claiming Darwin Nunez missed the game against Milan in Hong Kong.

I can’t get into the details of the rumors that are swirling around Luis right now, said Slot.

He’s training extremely well, but we’ve already made the decision to not play him.

This summer, Liverpool have already made deals with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.

Diaz was a key member of the squad that won the Premier League from 2024 to 2025 when he arrived at Anfield from Porto in a deal worth an initial £37m in January of this year.

Wirtz, a record signing for Liverpool, made his debut against Milan at the sold-out Kai Tak Stadium.

Before kick-off, Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish laid a wreath of flowers in memory of Diogo Jota, who passed away in a car accident earlier this month while he and his brother Andre Silva were driving through the Spanish province of Zamora. The players had the number “Diogo J 20” on their shirts.

The Italian side gave the opening 10 minutes of the Premier League title a lead, but Rafael Leao smacked past Alisson Becker to open the scoring.

From the edge of the box, Dominik Szoboszlai fine-cuttled his equalizer into the top corner of Mike Maignan’s goal.

Although Slot anticipates using Wirtz as an attacking midfielder behind the striker or as a narrow left-sided forward, he demonstrated his ability to connect the forward line from a powerful central role in Hong Kong.
