Destiny’s Child singer, Michelle Williams, has revealed the real reason why she left her prestigious Broadway gig in 2018.

The 45-year-old Survivor star had already secured a role in Once On This Island in New York and was ready to wock the audience’s interest. However, sadly, the singer, best known for belting out bops with Destiny’s Child pals, Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland, suddenly left just two weeks into the show.

Michelle has now admitted in a heartbreaking interview that she had been struggling with her mental health and that she had thought she had blown her chances of getting an acting job after leaving the play.

Speaking on Good Morning America, she said: “Back in 2018, I had to leave a Broadway show because of my mental health. I believed I could return on Broadway when the door was shut. I believed I had it blown. I thought I’d be seen as a liability”.

In retrospect, Michelle recalled how she had already sought medical attention earlier that year: “I wasn’t as well as I probably should have been, and it just got to the point where I had to check out of the show. To me, that was two blows in the same year. Even so, it’s still depressing to check into a treatment facility for depression before going on a show.

Michelle’s struggle with her mental health began when she went stratospheric with Destiny’s Child. With a string of hits and world tours, the Texas trio’s chart-topping trio appeared to have swept the world, but Michelle wasn’t always upbeat.

“When I disclosed it to our manager at the time, bless his heart, he was like: ‘ You all just signed a multi-million dollar deal. You’re about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about? ‘” she shared during a 2017 interview with The Talk. Michelle continued: “Had I had a name to what I was feeling at the time, I would have disclosed that I’ve been suffering from depression”.

Happily for the singer, she is now back on Broadway, starring in Death Becomes Her. Her role has sparked rumours of a possible Tony Award, with Michelle saying she feels “like I’ve already won”, adding: “It’s great to be back”.

And the actor had some well-known support on the show’s opening night when Kelly and Beyonce swooped in November. Michelle said, “They were so excited when I told them about the opportunity. They were so proud of me. I’m thankful for second, third, fourth, however many chances”.
