With the 45th edition of the biennial contest taking place from September 26 to September 28 at Bethpage Black in New York, both the European and American Ryder Cup teams are beginning to develop.
The names of all six automatic qualifiers for the US are known. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and JJ Spaun will all be added to the 12-man roster thanks to captain Keegan Bradley’s wildcard picks, including Harris English, Russell Henley, and Russell Henley.
Only one spot will be up for grabs at the Belfry this week, which is when Europe’s qualifying process comes to an end.
Shane Lowry from Ireland is in sixth and final place, but Rasmus Hojgaard from Denmark will take his place if he finishes in 29th or better.
The other five confirmed names are Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, and Tyrrell Hatton, with picks for captain Luke Donald expected to release on September 1st.
McIntyre’s spot was confirmed when he defeated Scheffler in the final qualifying round of the American Open last week. At the US Open in June, the eighth-seeded player placed second, followed by the eighth-ranked player from the previous month.
Bob has put in some impressive performances this season on both sides of the Atlantic, and Bob’s fine form combined with his 2023 experience will be invaluable in New York, according to Donald of the Scot, who collected 212 points in three games in Rome.
Jon Rahm, who won the LIV Golf individual title for the second year in a row in Spain, is expected to take the top spot, along with Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg and Norwegian Viktor Hovland, who are both likely members of the 12-man team.
With a chance of making their Ryder Cup debut, Marco Penge and Harry Hall, two Englishmen, are among those who are in.
Hall, who is 15th overall, has won five top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour and qualified for this week’s season-ending Tour Championship. This year, he has recorded 409 birdies, or 45 more than any other player.
US qualifiers DeChambeau and Scheffler are in the lead.
Following the conclusion of the previous qualifying event, the BMW Championship, the six American qualifiers were confirmed.
Scheffler, the world’s number one, won both the US PGA Championship and the US Open on Sunday, earning him a quick victory.
After being defeated by McIlroy to win the Players Championship title in a play-off, JJ Spaun, who won the US Open and now holds his first major, was also qualified.
In 2024, Schauffele won the US PGA and Open. Although he extended his run of not missing a cut to 58 events, which is the longest since Tiger Woods set the record at 142, he has had a quieter year in 2025. He is not yet eligible to compete in the 30-man Tour Championship, which is taking place this week.
Over the weekend, English and Henley reserving their spots, while DeChambeau, who plays on the LIV Golf circuit, qualified thanks to six top-10 major wins in the previous 17-month qualifying period.
On August 27th, Captain Bradley will release the six captain’s picks to complete the 12-man team.
After finishing in a tie for 17th at the BMW Championship, Bradley, 39, has a chance of picking himself to play, putting him in contention to win the US Ryder Cup.
Arnold Palmer, 34, captained the US team in 1963 as the Ryder Cup’s final playing captain.
Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa, two world champions, did not automatically qualify for the US team.
None of the top 12 Americans have ever competed in a Ryder Cup, and Bradley may choose Patrick Cantlay, who is 15th on the list but has collected 512 points in two previous starts.
