James Van Der Beek, a star of Dawson’s Creek, stated in a health update that living with cancer feels like a “full-time job” after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek said living with cancer feels like a ‘full-time job’ as the star shared a health update after he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023. The actor, who has been married to business consultant Kimberly Brook since 2010 and shares six kids with her, said the cancer will be a ‘process for the rest of his life’.
When James first made the announcement of the diagnosis last year, he assured fans that he was “privately dealing” with the diagnosis and was “resolving it” in a precautionary manner. The 48-year-old actor, who made his acting debut on screen in a 1993 episode of Clarissa Explains It All, claimed his “extraordinary family” was there for him and said: “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

The actor also spoke with Today.com to update on his “journey.” He stated, “It’s a process. The rest of my life will likely follow in my footsteps.
He acknowledged that having cancer made it feel like a “full-time job” and that finding “the beauty of just taking things a little bit more slowly and prioritizing rest and really allowing that to be the job” is a priority.
James continued, pleading that everyone should bescreened for colorectal cancer, adding that he was only 46 when the recommended screening period was reached.
James remarked, “I believed I was way ahead of the game.” I succeeded in eating everything. I was in good health. I had amazing cardiovascular health. I had no idea why I ought to have received a favorable diagnosis.
The actor is currently focusing on the prequel series Legally Blonde, which has helped him get distracted. He said, “The best thing about work is that cancer doesn’t exist between action and cut.”
James has since started acting in movies and TV shows as the titular Dawson Leery from the well-known teen drama Dawson’s Creek. Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, the actress who plays Batman, and Joshua Jackson, both of whom were also acquired by the show.
