David Bowie’s ‘tour madam’ reveals what really went down on tour
Fans around the world still recall David Bowie’s recognizable appearance on his 77th birthday.
The musician, 69, passed away on January 10th, 2016, and is remembered for his legendary red hairstyle and huge hits from his Ziggy Stardust era. And the woman behind the look has revealed exactly what it was like to travel with the legendary musician.
Suzi Ronson shared her time with the Life On Mars singer in her book Me and Mr Jones. After explaining how she frequently arranges girls to meet the band after performances, she even went so far as to call herself the “tour madam.”
However, she has since called the title a tongue-in-cheek comment. Speaking to the Express, Suzi said: “I christened myself the ‘ Tour Madam’, and in those days, it didn’t mean what it means now. Well I suppose it did but it was much more light-hearted”.
She continued: “I christened myself that tongue-in-cheek because there came a point where the band couldn’t be like most bands and wait in the dressing room]and then] the girls come back and they sign the photographs. It wasn’t like that”.
Suzi claimed that because the band had received so well, fans frequently feared coming out. She explained that getting them off the stage and returning to the hotel was a part of her job. What I used to do was get on the bus with the rest of the band, and there were [fans] circling the bus and inquired if they wanted to return. I wasn’t bringing them back…. I wasn’t procuring girls… I was simply bringing fans back to the hotel”, Suzi added.
She made a concession that David was “quite a naughty boy,” while denying that the band’s other members were. She then claimed that none of the members of the band performed “anything terrible.”
When Suzi first met Bowie in 1970, she was in her early 20s. Before the star retired the recognizable Ziggy Stardust character in 1973, she soon established a connection with his inner circle. She later wed legendary Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson, who had a daughter named Lisa.
Alan Edwards, a former publicist for David Bowie, also made an alleged error in his identity last year when he revealed how Michaelangelo’s knowledge of the singer made him mistaken for a tour guide at the Sistine Chapel. In June, Alan told the Mirror that he wanted to see some art and that we visited the Vatican. David disliked being surrounded by people who made a fuss over him, and he frequently used to roam incognito while wearing a cap and a copy of a Greek newspaper. David and a few members of our party made an exception for this visit to the Sistine Chapel.
He acknowledged that the Star man’s knowledge left him puzzled, as did many of their fellow tourists, and that David also provided valuable information, particularly regarding Michelangelo’s decision to accept the position, which he did not do because he had always considered himself a sculptor. David was bringing the story to life, not only for us but others”.
