The incident that resulted in Jean Philippe-Mateta being taken to the hospital by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, according to Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish, was “the most reckless” he has ever witnessed.

Roberts caught Mateta’s head with his boot as he ran out of the ball and was sent off just eight minutes into Palace’s FA Cup fifth round match.

Only after a VAR review did the referee Michael Oliver send out a red card.

Mateta was stretchered to an ambulance and taken to a hospital where she spent the majority of her time receiving intensive care, including oxygen.

He has a head injury, a bad gash behind his ear, and what we know is what. He is undoubtedly in a hospital. Therefore, Parish told the BBC, “we hope for the best.”

That’s the most reckless challenge I’ve ever seen on a football field, and I think that’s a lad, because he’s challenging a fellow professional, perhaps for the rest of his life, to face.

Oliver Glasner, the manager of the Palace, confirmed Mateta is conscious but has suffered a serious ear injury.

He is in a hospital and is conscious. His ear has a terrible appearance. We wish him the best of luck because it is a very serious injury,” Glasner said.

“We can’t be really happy; we are not.” Although it’s a great win, you can still reach the quarter-finals, but when you lose a player, especially one like this, you have two different emotions in your stomach.

Mateta has 15 goals total for Palace this season, including eight in his previous nine games.

France won silver at the Paris Olympics last year, and the 27-year-old also netted five times.

At the 1982 World Cup, German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher and French forward Patrick Battiston faced a infamous clash.

With JP (Mateta) in hospital, “It’s difficult for me to think about anything else,” Parish said.

“Someone mentioned there was a similar one at the 1982 World Cup, but it’s a terrible challenge. I have no idea why the referee was required to appear on the screen.

The man advantage was used almost the entire time by Palace to advance to the quarter-finals.

Before Daniel Munoz prodded in a second, Japhet Tanganga’s own goal broke the visitors’ resistance.

13 minutes into stoppage time, Mateta’s treatment, added another goal for the Lions after Wes Harding restored the Lions’ goal.

Eddie Nketiah’s looping header found the far corner, forcing Palace to wait until 82 minutes before making a progress.

In a controversial other Preston defeated Burnley 3-0 in an all-Championship match to advance to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1966 in a different controversial match, beating Preston 3-0 in the championship match.

Before kick-off, Preston forward Milutin Osmajic was charged with making a racist remark toward Hannibal Mejbri, and the entire Burnley team refused to shake his hand.

Scott Parker made sweeping changes to his side, but Osmajic started and scored Preston’s second goal, cupping his ear to the Burnley supporters in celebration.

As Burnley’s nine consecutive clean sheets came to an end, Robbie Brady and Will Keane were also on target.
