At least 39 people were killed and 40 were hurt in a rally for a well-known Indian actor-turned-politician in Tamil Nadu, according to the state’s chief minister, MK Stalin, in Karur, the district where the incident took place on Saturday.
Vijay, one of Tamil Nadu’s most well-known actors, who only uses his first name, addressed the rally, which officials estimate had gathered tens of thousands of people.
According to local officials, a group of Vijay’s supporters and supporters fell as he addressed the enthusiastic crowd, causing the crowd’s enrage.
Vijay expressed his condolences shortly after the tragedy.
He posted on X, “My heart is shattered.” I “am writhing in indescribable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.”
The “unfortunate incident” was described as “deeply saddening,” according to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vijay left acting in 2024 and founded his political party, despite the uncertainty over whether he intends to run for office.
