Coronation Street CEOs have filed a trademark application with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office.
With a selection of Corrie perfumes, soap fans may soon be able to sample Weatherfield’s scent.
Coronation Street bosses have applied to trademark the ‘Corrie’ brand with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office. They want the ability to flog “Toiletries; cosmetics; soaps; perfumes; essential oils; eau de Cologne; make-up; hair lotions; shampoos; suntan lotions” using the world-famous Corrie name.
The application also extends to homewares like kitchen utensils and bed linen. It was filed last month by ITV chiefs and will stay in place for 10 years once rubber-stamped.
The trademark strengthens the TV company’s ability to pursue legal action against unauthorised third parties who might use its name for commercial purposes, according to an intellectual property attorney who has seen the papers.
Simply having these trademarks registered can significantly deter any third party considering the use of the name without authorization.
Additionally, it increases ITV’s chances of promoting the Corrie brand. They are likely to look for opportunities to license these trademarks to partners and make money from royalties as a result.
Vera Duckworth legend Liz Dawn, who portrayed her in Corrie, reportedly put her name on a fragrance that was released more than 30 years ago.
And if Street bosses do start selling their branded perfume they will be following a host of famous names flogging their own scents, including David Beckham and Britney Spears.
Others to put their names to perfumes include Kerry Katona, Ariana Grande and even Donald Trump, who released a cologne called Empire.
Lunch boxes, beer glasses, water bottles, and teapots are other items that Corrie is registering as trademarks. Additionally, they listed rain ponchos, hats, ties, bean bags, and bathrobes.
Coronation Street tour participants can already visit the gift shop, which has a wide selection of products.
