Conducting Elections In Nigeria Significant Burden, Says INEC Chair Yakubu
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has expressed his concerns about the prohibitive costs associated with holding elections in Nigeria.
He defended the implementation of the 2024 budget before the National Assembly on Friday, making this statement.
Prof. Yakubu highlighted that despite INEC being one of the largest employers in the country, it operated on a reduced budget of N40 billion, significantly lower than the N80 billion initially requested.
He emphasized how much money has been expended on the commission’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities.
He urged the lawmakers to convene a retreat where both the legislature and INEC could collaborate, exchange ideas, and come together to address the pressing issues that the electoral process in Nigeria faces.
“We need a major conversation, the commission cannot continue conducting election all year round”, he said.
Yakubu , further lamented the deteriorating state of INEC’s facilities, particularly the 860 buildings across the country, which are in urgent need of repair.
