Musicians are only just beginning to understand Chappell Roan, a singer-songwriter whose name was given her. With hits like Hot to Go and Good Luck, Babe!, the popstar is currently playing at the Leeds Festival and Reading Festival. Fans are only just beginning to understand the origins of the Grammy Award winner’s stage name.

A message from the r/ChappellRoan subreddit provides some insight into the origins of The Subway singer. Fans claim that it is both a nod to one of their favorite artists and a tribute to a family member. Since 2013, Roan, who goes by the name Kayleigh Amstutz, has been making money in the form of music.

These well-known hits are on everyone’s radars in Leeds and Reading on her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

But curious fans are trying to uncover the origins of her stage name, and believe country singer Marty Robbins is to thank. One fan posting to the r/ChappellRoan Reddit page wrote: “Just learned where she got her stage name.”

“Yes!!” was a different fan’s response. Her grandfather’s last name was Chappell, and his favorite song was “The Strawberry Roan”! A classic American cowboy song from Robbins’ album Gunfight Ballads and Trail Songs is The Strawberry Roan.

Roan’s grandfather reportedly enjoyed the cover of Curley Fletcher’s song, which first appeared in 1915. She then used Dennis K. Chappell’s surname and a song word to honor him.

Roan later would later liken her stage name to Hannah Montana, which makes her appear “more open and confident” on stage than she would if she were performing under her birth name.

In an interview with student newspaper Cherwell in 2022, Chappell stated, “I have never felt particularly connected to my real name Kayleigh. I named my grandfather Dennis K. Chappell in his honor because he was my grandfather.

I promised to be Chappell for him before he passed away in 2016 from brain cancer.

Additionally, fans discovered that the stage name was being pronounced incorrectly. On March 17, 2024, Chappell Roan’s US show at West Des Moines may have seen the Red Wine Supernova singer explain how to pronounce her name.

Since then, Instagram has shared video from the concert. Since then, a video of Roan explaining how to pronounce her name has received over 120 000 likes.
