Manager Van Nistelrooy Leaves Relegated Leicester

Leicester have announced on Friday that Ruben van Nistelrooy will leave the club after almost ten weeks of being relegated from the Premier League.

Leicester claimed in a statement that they “mutually agreed” with the Dutchman that his contract would end immediately.

After a brief spell as Manchester United’s interim manager, Van Nistelrooy, 48, made his debut for the struggling Foxes in late November.

After only one season in the top division, they returned to the second-tier Championship. However, he was unable to stop their decline.

Leicester remarked, “Ruud has managed to have a challenging time for the club.”

“From the moment he was appointed in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity, and a clear commitment to our goals, including by integrating several promising players from the club’s academy into our first-team environment.”

Ruud departs with the respect and gratitude of the entire football club for his hard work and dedication, as well as our very best wishes for the future.

Van Nistelrooy, the club’s former manager, called for discussions with the club’s hierarchy after relegation was confirmed, but he was forced to wait a few weeks.

He said, “I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy, and all the staff I worked with for my time at the club.

After replacing Steve Cooper, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker won four points in their first two games before suffering 15 defeats in their final 16 matches.

They went nine straight home games without scoring in a row, setting a new top-flight record.

In 2023/24, The Foxes were promoted alongside Leicester, along with Ipswich and Southampton, both of whom went down to the Championship.

Under former manager Claudio Ranieri, the club stunned the football world when they won the Premier League championship in 2016 against seemingly unimaginable odds.

After a nine-year hiatus, they were removed from the top division in 2023, but they did so for the time being.

Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on August 10th marks Leicester’s start to their Championship campaign.

After being charged with alleged breaches of financial regulations, the club is facing a potential points penalty.

Nigeria Forward Onuachu Joins Turkish Side Trabzonspor

Paul Onuachu, a Super Eagles forward, has been made a permanent move to Trabzonspor in Turkey.

On Friday, the saints announced the transfer via a statement posted on their website.

The Southampton Football Club said it is “confirming that conditions have been reached” with Trabzonspor regarding Paul Onuachu’s transfer.

The 31-year-old will leave St Mary’s after a two-and-a-half-year spell that saw him score four goals in 40 appearances on loan to the Turkish side in 2023/24.

We applaud Paul and wish him well as he worked for the Saints.

Following last year’s relegation from the Premier League, Southampton will now play in the English Championship.

Ipswich Town and Leicester City were both promoted to the bottom.

At Trabzonspor, Onuachu scored 15 goals in 21 games during the 2023-2024 season on loan.

He made his Super Eagles international debut in 2019 with 24 caps and three goals.

Vinicius Stars As Real Madrid Ease Into Club World Cup Last 16

Vinicius Junior scored one goal and made another with a touch of class as Real Madrid sealed their place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup with a 3-0 win over Salzburg on Thursday.

The Brazil star opened the scoring after a superb defence-splitting pass by Jude Bellingham on 40 minutes and then set up Federico Valverde for the all-important second goal in first-half stoppage time.

Gonzalo Garcia wrapped up the win late on with his second goal of the tournament, and the result means Xabi Alonso’s team end the first round of FIFA’s new tournament unbeaten.

They go through to the knockout stage as Group H winners on seven points, setting up a last-16 tie against Juventus in Miami on Tuesday.

“Vini had a great game. It’s not just his goal and his assist that will stay with me, but also the sacrifices he made for the team and the work he did defensively,” said Alonso after Vinicius scored a first club goal in nine appearances since mid-April.

Salzburg go out as Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia progress in second place behind Real after defeating already eliminated Pachuca of Mexico 2-0 in Nashville.

They play Manchester City in the last 16.

Madrid are adjusting in the United States to life under new coach Alonso and were again without top scorer Kylian Mbappe, with the Frenchman thus far not having played at the Club World Cup as he recovers from illness.

“We were really stable and really mature in the first half. We controlled the game well and didn’t rush things,” Alonso added.

“There is still a lot to improve, but we are moving in the right direction.”

There was still plenty of star appeal even without Mbappe for the 64,811 fans who filled Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia almost to capacity — they reserved their loudest cheers for Bellingham and spirits were not dampened by wet, fresh conditions as the blistering heatwave of recent days suddenly lifted.

 Alonso opts for back three

Alonso opted, as during his time in charge of Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, for a back three with Aurelien Tchouameni in between Antonio Rudiger and Dean Huijsen. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fran Garcia played as wing-backs.

Real won 5-1 when the teams met in the Champions League in January with Vinicius scoring twice, and the Brazilian was again heavily involved in putting the Austrian team to the sword here.

He was denied by goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky when clean through on 20 minutes, but made up for that by getting the breakthrough as the interval approached.

The goal owed much to a fantastic pass by Bellingham which found Vinicius in between the two Salzburg centre-backs. He held off two chasing defenders and scored with an early left-foot shot low into the corner.

It was a 22nd goal of the season in all competitions and one that delighted those backing Real in the crowd.

Petar Ratkov had a chance for Salzburg after Arda Guler was dispossessed just outside his own area, but Real scored again to make it 2-0 almost on the half-time whistle.

When a rather aimless pass forward by Guler was deflected by Salzburg’s Mamady Diambou, Vinicius pounced on the loose ball and continued into the area before producing a clever back-heel to set up Valverde for the goal.

Salzburg now needed a favour from Al Hilal to stay in the competition although they did continue to make a fight of it and had chances to reduce the deficit in the second half.

Nevertheless they were picked off on the counter as Madrid got their third with six minutes of the 90 remaining.

A ball forward by Alexander-Arnold should have been cut out by Joane Gadou but the young defender’s touch was intercepted by Gonzalo Garcia and the young forward ran through before clipping a shot beyond the goalkeeper.

WAFCON: Super Falcons Land In Casablanca

Super Falcons, a delegation from Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, on Wednesday night, arrived in Casablanca, Morocco’s economic capital, for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

22 players and team officials make up the delegation. Both Asisat Oshoala and Folashade Ijamilusi, both from China, are already located in Morocco’s economic hub.

In a friendly at Lisbon’s Estádio José Gomes on Monday evening, the nine-time African champions held their Portuguese opponents to a scoreless draw. A memorable game was played by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defensive end Shukurat Oladipo, and veteran forward Francisca Ordega.

Mbappe Files Harassment Complaint Against PSG

The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed an investigation had been opened, and Kylian Mbappe has accused his former club Paris Saint-Germain of moral harassment in a legal filing, according to a report released on Thursday from the prosecutor’s office.

Mbappe, the country’s captain, is also fighting with PSG to recoup the 55 million euros ($64.45 million) in unpaid wages and bonuses he claims the club owes him.

Mbappe’s most recent grievance stems from how PSG handled him at the start of the 2023-2014 season, when he was forced to train alongside players the club was attempting to offload.

He claims the club halted his efforts to agree a new contract, which has had an impact on other footballers and led to a complaint from the French players’ union last year.

Mbappe was not invited to a pre-season trip to Asia in 2023, and he missed the team’s opening game that year. He was later called back after discussions with the club.

After seven seasons with PSG, the 26-year-old made his summer debut with Real Madrid.

In 308 games for the French club, who won the Champions League for the first time last month after the striker left, he scored 256 goals.

Kenya’s Kipyegon Seeks History With Four Minute Mile Attempt

Triple Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon of Kenya will attempt to make history by becoming the first woman to run a sub-four minute mile on Thursday, but to do so she must shave nearly eight seconds off her world record.

Already the world record holder in this non-Olympic distance equivalent to 1.6km, Kipyegon will nevertheless have to smash her own benchmark of 4min 07.64sec by gaining almost two seconds per 400m.

No woman has ever attempted the feat, which was first achieved in 1954 by Roger Bannister — in 3min 59.4sec — in what has gone down as one of track running’s most momentous achievements.

In the unofficial race in Paris organised by Nike, 31-year-old Kipyegon will benefit from the wealth of her sponsor’s technological support.

The “Breaking 4” project follows on six years after Eliud Kipchoge’s “Breaking 2” — when the Kenyan became the first man to run a marathon in under two hours.

For the attempt, Kipyegon will sport a custom-made suit as well as new Victory Elite FK shoes. She will also reportedly be accompanied by a team of male pacemakers around the Stade Charlety track.

Despite all this, some believe that the task of trimming nearly eight seconds off her world record time will be beyond the three-time Olympic 1500m gold medallist.

“Spoiler alert. She’s not going to break 4:00. And it’s not going to be particularly close,” said Robert Johnson, co-founder of the specialist site LetsRun.com.

“She was fantastic… To nearly break a world record in your season opener is amazing and shows you why Kipyegon is one of track & field’s all-time greats,” said Johnson.

“If you run 2:29.21 1000m pace for 1609 meters -— otherwise known as a mile — You get 4:00.08.. To break 4:00, Kipyegon would have to run an extra 609 meters faster than what she ran (that) day.”

Kipyegon, nonetheless, has the backing of certain fellow long-distance Olympians, with Norway’s double champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen telling AFP: “I’m really intrigued to see if it’s possible.
