Sunderland Promoted To Premier League After Late Winner Against Sheffield United

Tommy Watson’s stoppage-time winner against Sheffield United on Saturday secured a dramatic 2-1 win in the Championship play-off final, which Underland won after eight years of being unemployed.

Regis Le Bris’ side conceded a first-half goal to Tyrese Campbell at Wembley, but Eliezer Mayenda equalized in the closing stages before Watson delivered the priceless winner.

Sunderland’s recovery from a slow start led to an astonishing turnaround in the single richest game of football, which generated an estimated £200 million ($270 million) in increased revenue.

With the return of hostilities with vengeful rivals Newcastle next season, Watson’s champagne moment made things happen for Sunderland fans.

“This victory shows how resilient and disciplined we were this season,” the team said. Le Bris remarked, “We tried various options, and finally we came up with the solution.

Sunderland’s first-ever Premier League appearance since 2017 comes after a gloomy four-season break in the third tier.

The Black Cats advanced to the top of the standings in the most impressive way despite going through five straight defeats.

In the semi-final second leg against Coventry, Dan Ballard scored the last-gasp extra-time header just seconds after a penalty shootout.

With only 14 minutes left at Wembley before the stunning defeat, they looked down and out once more.

Le Bris, a 49-year-old Frenchman who left Ligue 1 with Lorient last year after enduring relegation, was promoted to the Stadium of Light, which was an impressive achievement.

United have lost four Championship final defeats in ten failed attempts to advance to the play-offs, including one win at Wembley in 100 years.

Farewell gift

In the second minute, Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson deflected Kieffer Moore’s header past the post.

Sunderland captain Luke O’Nien was forced to leave with a dislocated shoulder that made him writhed in pain while attempting to stop Moore’s header.

Jim Montgomery’s incredible save helped Sunderland shock Leeds in the 1973 FA Cup final, which came to mind when Patterson’s stop was played.

However, United did not disappoint in the 25th minute when they won.

With a skillfully weighted pass to Campbell, who guided a composed finish over Patterson from 12 yards, Ben Hamer demonstrated why he won the title of Championship Player of the Year.

Nine minutes later, Harrison Burrows thought he had doubled United’s lead, but after a VAR check, his strike was flagged as offside against Vini Souza.

After the break, United’s substitute Andre Brooks drilled through on goal, but Patterson made a superb save.

With only their second shot on target in the 76th minute, Mayenda scored to bring Sunderland level.

Mayenda was hit with a fierce finish into the roof of the net by Patrick Roberts’ pin-point pass just inside the area.

O’Nien waved his only healthy arm in jubilation as he sprinted off the bench, shoulder in hand, and embraced Mayenda.

That joy only served as a prelude to the exuberant scenes that Watson sparked just five minutes into stoppage-time.

After squandering a loose pass from Moore, Watson headed toward the United States and curled a low shot past Michael Cooper’s fatally slow dive.

Watson’s thrilling winner, which was the perfect farewell gift, ensures Sunderland joins the 19-year-old among English football’s elite. Brighton will join Watson in the close-season.

“It’s unbelievable. When I left the bench, the story was written. Watson said, “I couldn’t have imagined it any better.”

“We’ll see each other again in a big way next year” promises the promise!

Mo Salah Voted Premier League Player Of The Season

After leading Liverpool to their 20th English title, Mohamed Salah has been voted Premier League player of the year twice.

Salah led Liverpool to the title after netting 28 league goals so far this season, five more than anyone else, and contributing 18 assists.

The 32-year-old Egyptian superstar is two assists shy of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s single-season record of two assists before Sunday’s final game against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.

The public’s votes and those from a panel of football experts are combined to determine this award. He also won it in the 2017-18 campaign.

He has broken the record for Manchester City players who have won the award for the past four seasons.

Virgil van Dijk, Salah’s teammate, was the only non-City player to receive the award in 2018/19.

Van Dijk was one of the players Salah won in the voting, having earlier signed a new contract with Liverpool.

Ryan Gravenberch, a midfielder for Liverpool, Declan Rice of Arsenal, Morgan Gibbs-White for Nottingham Forest, Alexander Isak for Newcastle, Bryan Mbeumo for Brentford, and Chris Wood for Nottingham Forest were the other players.

Arsenal ‘Humble’ But ‘All-In’ For Women’s Champions League Final

Renee Slegers, the coach of Arsenal, stated that her team would remain modest as they prepare for their Saturday women’s Champions League encounter with reigning champions Barcelona.

Arsenal reached the final in 2007 with their first victory, while the Catalan giants have won the competition three times and six of the previous seven finals.

Arsenal hope to be the sand in the gears of the Lisbon showpiece despite the fact that Barcelona are on the verge of a repeat of the quadruple from the previous season.

We will demonstrate courage tomorrow, Slegers said at a press conference, “We respect Barcelona as a team, they are really, really difficult (to face).”

We are very humble for the occasion, but we also want to win, and we must find a way to win. ”

The 36-year-old coach, who took over Arsenal’s season after being appointed in October, warned her team to always be on the lookout for their formidable opponents.

We need to be switched on, disciplined, and courageous, and we must also believe in ourselves, Slegers said.

It’s just been so much work, but it’s all of us, the people who have done this for such a long time, to put ourselves in a position to play this game tomorrow.

We are so excited about the challenge that we will face tomorrow and how well-prepared we will all be for it. ”

Alessia Russo, the team that won the 2007 UEFA Women’s Cup, shared a lunch with the Arsenal squad earlier this week, and the player described it as having a “special” time.

The forward, who was named the football writers’ women’s player of the year earlier this month, acknowledged that any player who plays for Arsenal is aware of how successful it is and how ambitious it is to compete with the best.

We are aware of what has come before us as well, and we had lunch with some of the 2007 winners earlier this week, so understanding what it still means to them is truly special. ”

  ‘Our standard’

The 26-year-old England international has scored seven Champions League goals, finishing only behind Claudia Pino, who also leads the competition.

We are aware that Barcelona is a strong side and consistently has won.

We are capable of doing what we can as a team, and I have full faith in us. ”

In the first leg of their semi-final tussle, Arsenal lost to record-eight-time champions Lyon, but the team recovered with a remarkable 4-1 victory in France to reach the final.

Russo said, “We have spoken about belief a lot as a team, and we have also discovered a lot of ways to win this season.”

It has been a year of learning and highs and lows.

We want to keep that performance in Lyon as a benchmark for the rest of our industry.

We wanted to compete in the final because it was unique and it was a result that we needed to perform without any other options. ”

Kim Little scored the first game of the season between these teams in 2012, when Arsenal won 7-0.

The Scottish midfielder, 34, claims, “I don’t have many memories from the games, but I do remember that my friend Jenny (Beattie) scored and that I also did in one of them.”

Tomorrow, I’m hoping to make more (memories). ”

Napoli Win Fourth Serie A Title As Inter Milan Fall Short

Napoli won the fourth consecutive Italian title on Friday, defeating Cagliari 2-0 to clinch the title.

At the end of the season, Napoli won their second league title with the goals of Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku at a packed and wild Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Napoli finished the season a point ahead of Inter Milan, who won 2-0 at Como, the incoming champions having to play half the match with 10 men after Pepe Reina’s goalkeeper was sent off just before half-time of his most recent game.

With the introduction of new fans’ heroes McTominay and Lukaku, another Scudetto party was held in Naples.

Three minutes before half-time, Scotland midfielder McTominay scored his 12th goal of his first Serie A season, which was a fitting end to the stalemate that Napoli needed to end. He has been the symbol of the team’s revival under coach Antonio Conte.

McTominay signed with the start of the 2018-19 campaign in August, immediately affecting a team that is still reeling from a terrible 2023 league title defense.

In a tense stadium, as fans watched a number of good chances come and go, as Inter took the lead through Stefan de Vrij in the 21st minute to move briefly to the top of the division.

And Lukaku, who collected Amir Rrahmani’s long pass and held off Yerry Mina before ramming home the goal that sealed the deal, made sure Napoli would win the title five minutes after the break.

Lukaku scored just as Joaquin Correa doubled Inter’s lead when he confidently slammed inside Ivan Smolcic for his second goal of the season.

After conceding the Scudetto to Napoli, Inter now turn their attention to the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Munich, where Simone Inzaghi’s team will attempt to capture the biggest prize in club football.

Inter lost the title thanks to 12 points lost in winning positions, and the second-string team sent out at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia suggested Inzaghi was already considering the weekend ahead.

Inter were hoping to win another treble under Jose Mourinho in 2010, but the Champions League is now their only chance to win something after a long, fruitless campaign that they could never win.

Sinner Expects ‘Different Atmosphere’ At French Open After Doping Ban

Jannik Sinner, the world’s number one, expressed expectations for a different atmosphere at his first Grand Slam following a three-month doping ban on Friday.

Sinner made a comeback to the Spanish Open earlier this month in front of his home fans, where he lost to Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

When the Italian takes on Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, the 72nd-ranked player, he will have a largely hostile Roland Garros crowd in the first round.

The 23-year-old told reporters on Friday, “It will undoubtedly be different.

I am aware of that. But I don’t believe they have anything against me, don’t you? They should support the players who are from this region and who are from this region, I suppose.

In the US Open, I play against American players, and it’s the same. It’s therefore typical. Because I’m Italian, I can tell you that the atmosphere in Rome is incredible.

It is appropriate that a player who plays in this city or country received more support.

I am aware of that. I also played here last year against some French players. So I’m reasonably certain of what to expect. ”

During his comeback event in Rome, Sinner praised the enthusiastic support he received from his audience.

But Sinner was unsure when asked if he anticipated a more hostile reception following his doping suspension in Paris.

There was a different situation at the time. Let’s see, then. He said, “I can’t respond to that question.”

Sinner had not played since winning the Australian Open at the end of January in Rome. Doping authorities accept that he violated a doping ban after testing positive for clostebol twice in March of last year, a contamination that the organization later admitted was an accident.

Sinner praised his performance in Rome as having much room to improve.

He has previously reached the French Open five times, but Alcaraz, the eventual champion, lost in five sets to him in the semi-finals last year.

After three months in the final, it was undoubtedly fantastic. We worked hard for that, which is understated, but it was also a great feeling to be a part of this final. It was also my first major clay final.

He continued, “Hopefully we are on time to make small adjustments for this.” No miracles exist, they say. I have some time. Unlike practice sessions, tests are different.

I believed that we had some good stats from that tournament in Rome; some of the places I’d like to visit. And I felt that way on the court as well.

But we are working hard, attempting to reach my desired physical level and feeling my best on-court, she said.

However, I’ve heard that getting a best-of-five will be a great test for me in terms of understanding where I am. Let’s see how my body reacts to this, yes.

Grand Slams are unique because we have seen some areas where I can improve.

You must be mentally prepared, as well as physically attempting to use the appropriate energy, as you know. Being consistent and reliable is everything. ”
