Bordeaux’s Poirot cited after Pollock incident

Reuters

Jefferson Poirot, a Bordeaux-Begles prop, has been charged with allegedly grabbing Northampton’s Henry Pollock by the throat following Saturday’s Champions Cup match in Cardiff.

Shortly after Bordeaux won the match with a score of 28-20, Poirot, 32, was caught altercating with the England flanker.

According to European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR), Poirot was charged with “acting in contravention of good sportsmanship in violation of law 9.27,” according to commissioner Tim Lowry.

The EPCR claimed in a statement that Poirot’s alleged behavior was “dangerous and had the potential to cause serious harm.”

Phil Dowson, the head coach for Northampton, had called the incident “uncalled for and out of order” and claimed foul play had been the cause of the incident.

Northampton and England fly-half Fin Smith added, “They were after him (Pollock),” in a statement after the game. They didn’t seem to like him, in my opinion.

They (Bordeaux players) appeared to be trying to get hold of him all the time, I recall.

Ecclestone stars as Lancs beat Surrey in T20 final

Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup, Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton

Lancashire Thunder 172-6 (20 overs): Kesteven 77, Moore 4-27

Surrey 140-7 (20 overs): Franklin 41, Ecclestone 4-12

Lancashire won by 32 runs

Lancashire Thunder became the first winners of the new Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup with a 32-run victory over Surrey in the final at Taunton.

Opener Tilly Kesteven hit 77 off 60 balls, putting on 86 for the first wicket with Emma Lamb (27), while Fi Morris made a rapid 27 as Lancashire posted 172-6.

Chasing the highest total on a day which also saw the two semi-finals played, Surrey made a fast start through openers Bryony Smith (25) and Kira Chathli (21).

Earlier Lancashire beat The Blaze by seven wickets in a rain-affected second semi-final to set up a showdown with Surrey who edged to a three-wicket win over Warwickshire, with two balls to spare, in a low-scoring game.

After showers had delayed their successful semi-final chase, Lancashire soon found themselves batting again after Surrey skipper Smith won the toss and opted to field first.

She may have regretted the decision when 20-year-old Kesteven raced to her first senior fifty, off just 37 balls, as the Red Rose raced to 86-0 after 10 overs.

Lamb fell the very next ball to Tilly Corteen-Coleman, but Lancashire continued to attack.

Off-spinner Kalea Moore removed Seren Smale for a brisk 19 and three balls later knocked back Kesteven’s off-stump.

Yet Morris maintained the tempo with some late hitting, striking three fours and a huge six in a 12-ball 27, before falling to Moore (4-27) who picked up two more wickets in the final over.

In an explosive start to the chase, Chathli launched Kate Cross for two sixes, but was castled next ball by the England seamer, and Smith then hit four successive boundaries off Grace Potts before holing out going for a fifth.

Ecclestone – who sent down 15 dots – removed Paige Scholfield and Emma Jones in successive balls to pull back Surrey to 75-4 at the halfway mark.

As the run rate required climbed above 10, Franklin holed out for an enterprising 41 off 36 balls to give a third wicket to Ecclestone as Surrey slipped to 105-6.

There was defiant hitting from Moore (22 not out) and Ryana Macdonald-Gay (18), but it was too little, too late as Ecclestone had the final word by removing the latter.

On Friday, Surrey will return to action at Taunton against Somerset in the women’s T20 Blast competition, which will also feature the men’s.

Brazil ‘best team in the world’ – new boss Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of New Brazil, stated that he is “honoured and proud to lead the world’s best team” and wants to see the World Cup win in 2026.

In a press conference held at the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), the 65-year-old was officially appointed as Brazil’s head.

After four years as Real Madrid’s manager, the Italian has recently come to Selecao. In his two years in charge, he has won the Champions League three times, as well as the La Liga title twice.

Ancelotti also helped AC Milan win two European titles, including the Premier League and FA Cup with Chelsea and the French and German domestic titles with Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich, respectively.

He said, “I have a significant job ahead of me.” “The challenge is great, I’m delighted. This team and I have always been very close. We’ll work to reclaim Brazil as the world’s champion.

Brazil has qualified for the World Cup five times, with the most recent triumph coming in 2002. Ancelotti’s first two games with them qualify for the South American World Cup.

Five days later, they travel to Sao Paulo to face Ecuador at home, followed by a home game against Paraguay.

Former Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari welcomed Ancelotti, who took his place after being humiliated by Argentina in a 4-1 defeat, which is the latest in a line-up of subpar results.

With four matches left, Brazil is fourth in the South American World Cup, with the top six teams earning direct entry into the competition from the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Inclusion of Casemiro and Richarlison in Ancelotti’s first team

For his first World Cup qualifiers of the week, Ancelotti has chosen Casemiro and Richarlison from Manchester United.

Since their team lost to Uruguay in October 2023 with a 2-0 defeat, the pair has not played for their nation.

Alisson, Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira, Bruno Guimaraes, Gabriel Martinelli of Arsenal, Matheus Cunha of Wolves, Andreas Pereira, Andreas Pereira, and Fulham goalkeeper Alisson are also members of the 25-man group.

Antony, who is currently on loan at Real Betis from Manchester United, has also been chosen for the Spanish side’s Wednesday conference league match against Chelsea.

Although he made a substitute appearance for Santos on Sunday in their 1-0 win over Vitoria in Brazil’s Serie A, striker Neymar has been ruled out as he recovers from a thigh injury he sustained in April.

Goalkeepers: Hugo Souza (Corinthians), Alisson (Liverpool), Bento (Al-Nassr), and Bento (Liverpool).

Wesley (all Flamengo), Alex Sandro, Danilo, Leo Ortiz, Marquinhos, Marquinhos, both Paris Saint-Germain, Carlos Augusto, Inter Milan, and Vanderson (Monaco) are the defenders.

Andreas Pereira (Fulham), Andrey Santos (Strasbourg), Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle), Casemiro (Manchester United), Ederson (Atalanta), and Gerson (Flamengo).

‘Poor’ decision by PGMOL to pick Bramall for Villa game – Hackett

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

Former referees’ group boss Keith Hackett described the appointment of Thomas Bramall as a “poor management decision” by Professional Game Match Officials Limited.

After conceding 2-0 to Manchester United on Sunday, Villa complained to the referees’ body PGMOL about Bramall, who had “big mistake” in missing out on the Champions League.

Morgan Rogers nudged the ball past United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir before the Villa midfielder netted the ball for a foul in Bramall.

The video assistant referee (VAR) was unable to intervene because he stopped play before the ball crossed the line, which Bramall believed to be true despite television footage suggesting otherwise.

Villa’s complaint centers on the appointment of “one of the most inexperienced referees in the Premier League.”

Bramall, 35, first refereed in the Premier League in August 2022, and his games this year have mostly been in either the top flight or the second tier, with 11 in the Premier League and 12 in the Championship.

Bramall has officiated the second-most top-flight games this season out of the ten referees appointed for Sunday’s final round of the Premier League, ahead of Lewis Smith, who took charge of his seventh game against Leicester.

In response to former Villa star Gabby Agbonlahor’s criticism of Bramall’s performance in a Talksport video, Hackett said PGMOL “do not learn.”

Our top referee, former Premier League player Michael Oliver, was operating VAR on a game, the former referee added. What a poor management choice.

Hackett, who was PGMOL’s former head under the name Professional Game Match Officials Board, added that he “would have anticipated that one of our top officials” had been chosen for the Manchester United-Aston Villa game.

He continued, “It was shocking and disappointed” that Oliver had been chosen as VAR for Tottenham’s defeat by Brighton, and that it was “difficult to comprehend” why he wasn’t chosen to referee “a big game” in Sunday’s final round.

What are PGMOL’s hiring guidelines?

PGMOL stated to BBC Sport that it does not make any comments regarding how individual match appointments are made.

All match officials are required to complete a declaration of interest form before the start of each season in accordance with PGMOL’s hiring policy.

Officials who do not have a conflict of interest in a game, such as video assistant referees and assistant video assistant referees, are only permitted to officiate games.

This includes organizations they support, organizations that have first-team competitive matches, or organizations that are affiliated with the official residence in another city or town.

Officials are also prohibited from participating in games that directly involve clubs that have strong ties to those clubs in which an interest has been declared.

A club’s association with another club is up to PGMOL’s discretion to determine whether that club has a strong relationship.

Howard Webb, the PGMOL chief refereeing officer, has the option to change the appointments at his discretion.

If Villa had defeated Manchester United, Newcastle would have qualified for the Champions League in fifth place after losing to Everton on Sunday.

Because Oliver loves Newcastle, he could not have led the game against Everton.

However, it’s not clear if that also meant he wasn’t chosen to officiate Villa or Manchester City or the Forest-Chelsea game because those teams were competing with Newcastle to earn Champions League qualification.

Unai Emery’s side defeated Chelsea 2-1 in the final Premier League game of Unai Emery’s reign.

Not only was he the only experienced referee in Sunday’s final round not chosen as the on-field official.

Although not in the middle for any of Sunday’s ten games, Chris Kavanagh, Simon Hooper, Peter Bankes, and Samuel Barrott have all spoken in 20 or more Premier League games this season.

Foy and Bramall were chosen “on merit”

Former Premier League official Chris Foy claimed that while many referees “would have given a foul in that situation,” Bramall’s decision was an “unfortunate incident.”

He claimed that Bramall’s performance in Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth on May 20, a match that featured a straight red card for each team, impressed BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.

Foy continued, “He was deserving of his appointment and was merited the [Villa] game.”

Unfortunately, because he took his time to give the penalty and made a really wise decision, we’re talking about it.

He seemed to be doing very well, but sadly, we’re discussing this particular decision.

Shay Given, a former goalkeeper for Newcastle and Aston Villa, said Bramall would “learn” and “grow” from this circumstance.

He continued, “Let’s not forget that Thomas Bramall is a person.”
