Man City Crisis Deepens With Champions League Defeat At Juventus
After losing to Juventus 2-0 on Wednesday, Manchester City’s chances of making the last 16 were further hampered by their further crisis.
Dusan Vlahovic and Weston McKennie’s second-half goals gave Juve a seventh defeat in ten games over Pep Guardiola’s struggling City.
After only eight points from their six matches in the revamped league phase, English champions City are 22nd in the top club competition in Europe.
With only matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge remaining, City is now just one point above the bottom 12 and eliminated, a position that was previously impossible at the start of the season.
However, City have fallen off the map since the end of October and are currently second only to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and Champions League.
In the midst of this awful run from, City will now play in the Manchester derby on Saturday, which is not the kind of game they need.
Guardiola told Amazon Prime in Italy, “We have to get points, we’ll go to Paris to try to do that, and we’ll try to do that as well,” adding.
“We can play the way we did today to escape this time.” They deserve more because they give everything, despite the fact that we lost very few balls and played very well.
Vlahovic’s header, his 10th goal of the year, and substitute McKennie’s fine volley with 15 minutes left also ended Juventus’ frustrating four-game draw and upped the spirits of fans who had been let down by Thiago Motta’s first few months as coach.
After drawing 11 of their 20 matches in all competitions before Wednesday’s game, Juve’s victory was met with cheers from the crowd as the fans color the Allianz Stadium’s stands with flag waving.
Juve sink City ,
“We did everything we had to do to win,” said the entire team. It’s a fantastic result and can push us on for the rest of the season”, said Vlahovic.
Because we’re a very young side, we’re lacking in experience, but at Juve, there is no substitute for getting results right away.
Motta’s team is on par with fellow Serie A outfit Atalanta and has two points from the top eight positions, which gives them direct access to the last 16.
After a very dull opening period in chilly Turin, where two underperforming teams ineffectively squared off against one another, there was little evidence that Juve would have won this important victory.
Five minutes before the break, Michele Di Gregorio’s best chance was to send Erling Haaland’s neat through ball home.
Even with a Kenan Yildiz pot shot to the side, Juve only managed to win in a largely negative opening period for the hosts, which was even worse for the hosts.
However, after City goalkeeper Ederson prevented Federico Gatti’s flying volley, Vlahovic almost forced his close-range header across the line in the 53rd minute.
As Juve retreated into their own box, City pressed for a leveller as they were stubbed into action, a move that recalls dozens of similarly obstinate Italian defensive displays.
Di Gregorio did brilliantly to keep out Ilkay Gundogan’s powerful long-range effort in the 68th minute, seconds before McKennie came on for Khephren Thuram.
The American made the perfect choice because he was completely unmarked and on hand to slash in fellow countryman Timothy Weah’s skillfully clipped cross to sabotage City’s chances of a point.
