Alcaraz Sweeps Past Draper And Into Italian Open Semis, Sabalenka Falls

Carlos Alcaraz is feeling good about his tennis after striding into the semi-finals of the Italian Open on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jack Draper as women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka was knocked out.

Madrid Open winner Sabalenka was sent packing in the quarter-finals by Chinese eighth-seed Zheng Qinwen 6-4, 6-3.

Third seed Alcaraz meanwhile produced what he called one of his best displays of the season to book a last four date with either reigning Rome champion Alexander Zverev or home hope Lorenzo Musetti, the day’s final pairing on centre court at the Foro Italico.

His impressive win over Draper kept alive the Spaniard’s chances of a third title of the season and also moved him up to number two in the world rankings behind Jannik Sinner.

On top of that, Alcaraz bagged a top-two seeding at the French Open which begins later this month.

“I think I started pretty well and I ended the match pretty well as well,” said the four-time Grand Slam winner in search of a first Rome crown.

“I lost focus a little bit in the second set but it wasn’t (for) too long, so it was pretty good. Probably it was one of the most complete matches that I played this year.”

Alcaraz had to be at his best to down fifth seed Draper, who put in another strong showing on clay in Italy after losing the Madrid Open final to Casper Ruud.

The Briton lost control of the first set when after taking a two-game lead he was broken twice by Alcaraz who then took the lead in the match.

And Alcaraz made sure of victory by saving two break points in a 10-minute game eight of the second set, before breaking Draper to love to go 5-4 ahead in the set and then serve out the match at the first time of asking.

Ruud’s attempt at a Madrid and Rome double has a Sinner-shaped obstacle in its way after the world number seven won his postponed match with Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-4.

“Tomorrow will be one of the toughest matches of the year, probably,” said sixth-seed Ruud of facing Sinner. “I got beaten pretty bad by Jannik last time in Turin (at the ATP Finals)… Let’s see, he’s been looking good since the first match.”

Sabalenka stunned

Sabalenka’s stunning clay-court form deserted her as she fell in straight sets to Olympic gold medallist Zheng.

It was seventh time lucky for the world number eight as she at last got the better of her Belarusian opponent with a confident display under the lights in Rome.

After surviving early pressure on her own serve, Zheng broke Sabalenka to take a 3-2 lead in the first set before serving out.

Zheng then pounced in Sabalenka’s first service game in the second frame to go up a break.

Sabalenka showed determination to make gritty holds in the fifth and seventh games of the set, but she could not make inroads on Zheng’s service as the 22-year-old powered into the semis.

“It’s been a long time I haven’t arrived in semi-finals,” Zheng told Sky Sports after securing her first semi-final appearance of the season.

“It was not easy for me because at the beginning of the year I got some struggle with my arm.

“So right now I’m just perfectly in shape and trying to play better tennis all the time.”

Zheng will meet Coco Gauff in the last four after the American earlier beat Mirra Andreeva 6-4, 7-6 (7/5).

Gauff has guaranteed herself number two in the women’s world rankings with her solid displays in Rome, where she saw off seventh seed Andreeva.

Former US Open winner Gauff said that she had “a lot of confidence” for the last four, where she will face an opponent against whom she holds a 2-0 record.

Gauff, 21, is looking for her first title of the season ahead of Roland Garros, after losing the Madrid final to Sabalenka.

Indian Wells champion Andreeva, at 18 years old the youngest woman to reach the last eight at the Foro Italico since Gauff in 2021, put up surprisingly little resistance in a low-key first set.

Gauff Sees Off Andreeva To Reach Italian Open Semis

Coco Gauff marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open on Wednesday by beating Mirra Andreeva in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7/5).

American Gauff has guaranteed herself number two in the world rankings with her solid displays in Rome, where she saw off seventh seed Andreeva on centre court.

Former US Open winner Gauff said that she had “a lot of confidence” for the last four, where she could face tournament favourite Aryna Sabalenka with the world number one taking on Zheng Qinwen later on Wednesday.

“Maybe some points weren’t my best. I still managed to be successful,” said Gauff.

Gauff, 21, is looking for her first title of the season, ahead of Roland Garros starting later this month, after losing the Madrid final to Sabalenka.

Indian Wells champion Andreeva, at 18 years old the youngest woman to reach the last eight at the Foro Italico since Gauff in 2021, put up surprisingly little resistance in a low-key first set.

And Gauff had too much for her in the second, quickly responding to each of Andreeva’s breaks of serve before coming through a tricky tie-break.

Later Carlos Alcaraz continues his bid for a first Rome crown when he takes on fifth seed Jack Draper, who has put in another strong showing on clay after reaching the Madrid final.

Draper could become the first British man to reach the last four in the Italian capital since 2016, when Andy Murray was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the final.

The winner of that match will then face one of reigning Rome champion Alexander Zverev and home hope Lorenzo Musetti, the day’s final pairing on centre court.

Casper Ruud set up a quarter-final clash with Jannik Sinner on Thursday after winning his postponed match with Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-4.

Sixth seed Ruud was supposed to play on Tuesday but an afternoon downpour forced his match to be moved to Wednesday.

Nike Unveils New Super Falcons Kits

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are stepping onto the international stage with a bold new look, as Nike officially unveiled the team’s latest home and away kits on Tuesday.

The announcement, which has since gone viral across social media, has been widely praised for celebrating Nigerian heritage while maintaining a sleek, modern edge.

With the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to kick off in Morocco this July, the new kits underscore the Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) commitment to honouring culture, pride, and performance.

In a statement shared via the NFF’s official Instagram handle, the federation declared, “New kit. Same pride. The Super Falcons’ new jersey is here — bold, fearless, and made for champions.”

The home jersey comes in white with bold green brushstroke patterns across the front and sleeves, inspired by traditional Nigerian designs.

The away jersey is dark green with a subtle texture and neon green details, including the Nike logo, the updated NFF crest, and “NAIJA” printed beneath the collar.

The same “NAIJA” text appears on the home kit.

Both kits feature a new NFF logo, showing an eagle on a football with cleaner lines. The circular badge includes “Nigeria Football Federation 1945,” honouring the federation’s founding year.

Departing Ancelotti Has ‘No Problem’ With Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday he “has no problem” with Real Madrid ahead of his departure from the club at the end of the season to take over the Brazil national team.

The veteran Italian will become Selecao boss on May 26, the day after Madrid’s last La Liga match of the campaign.

The Spanish giants are yet to name a replacement, although Xabi Alonso is a strong favourite to take over after confirming he will leave Bayer Leverkusen.

The Brazilian football federation (CBF) announced Ancelotti’s appointment on Monday, before any official confirmation from Madrid regarding Ancelotti’s departure.

“The CBF issued that statement because I’ll be the coach of Brazil from the 26th. Madrid will issue a statement whenever they want, there is no problem,” Ancelotti told reporters on the eve of his team’s match against Real Mallorca.

“I will be the coach of Brazil, which is a challenge, but until then, I’m the coach of Real Madrid and I want to finish in the best possible way.

“I’m focused on the final stretch of this spectacular adventure.”

Ancelotti, who has won 15 trophies including three Champions League titles across two spells at the Santiago Bernabeu, has endured a difficult final season in charge.

Real’s La Liga title defence has faltered with Barcelona on the cusp of the title, while they also lost the Copa del Rey final to their arch rivals and were humbled in the Champions League quarter-finals by Arsenal.

“Football, like life, is an adventure that begins and ends,” added the 65-year-old, who also lifted the European Cup twice as AC Milan coach.

“I’ve always kept in mind that this would end. I’ve had a great time… but in everything in life there comes a time when it ends.

“My seriousness and professionalism demand that I finish well here…

“I’ve never had a problem with the club and I never will.”

Madrid’s 4-3 loss to Barcelona on Sunday in El Clasico left them seven points behind Hansi Flick’s side with only three matches remaining.

Barca would secure the title if Madrid fail to defeat Mallorca on Wednesday.

“I’ve had a fantastic time here and I want to continue like this for the last two weeks I have left here,” said Ancelotti when asked about criticism from the press over his team’s performances this season.

“I’ve gotten the most out of myself and the titles speak for themselves.”

Nigerian Striker Awoniyi Rushed To Hospital For Abdominal Surgery

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery on an abdominal injury, according to reports on Monday.

The Nigerian international suffered the injury when he collided with a post during Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester at the City Ground on Sunday.

Awoniyi had stretched in a failed bid to convert Anthony Elanga’s cross and tried to carry on playing after receiving several minutes of treatment.

The true extent of the injury was only discovered by Forest’s medical staff on Monday, and reports said he was immediately taken for the surgery, which was not believed to be life-threatening.

“The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” the club said in a statement on their X handle.

“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate.”

The incident had provoked an angry reaction from Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who stormed on to the pitch and confronted boss Nuno Espirito Santo in a bizarre incident after the final whistle.

Marinakis said he was concerned about Awoniyi’s condition after he was left on despite Nuno consulting with his medical staff during stoppage-time.

It was a disappointing day for Forest, whose Champions League hopes suffered a major blow as a result of the draw with relegated Leicester.

Nuno’s seventh-placed are no longer in charge of their own destiny in their bid to appear in the Champions League for the first time since 1980-81.

They sit one point outside the Premier League’s top five places — which guarantee qualification for the Champions League — with two games left against West Ham and top five rivals Chelsea.

Forest are assured of at least a place in the UEFA Conference League, which will see them play European football for the first time since 1995-96.

Super Eagles Striker Tolu Arokodare Wins Best African Player Prize In Belgium

Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare has added another feather to his cap, scooping the Ebony Shoe award, a prize that recognises the best player of African descent in the Jupiler Pro League.

Tolu, 24, saw off competition from compatriot and Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika; Union Saint-Gilloise’s duo of  Noah Sadiki (DR Congo) and Promise David (Canada), and Genk teammate Zakaria El Ouahdi (Morocco) to land the coveted award.

He got the prize on Monday night at the African Awards 2025 held at the Tangla Hotel in Brussels, Belgium.

The Nigerian is one of the standout performers in Belgium this campaign, with 20 league goals and six assists under the tutelage of Thorsten Fink.

His impressive form puts him second on the leading goalscorers’ log in the Jupiler League. Tolu also has two goals to his name in the Belgian Cup this season.

He is the 34th winner of the Ebony Shoe prize, and the sixth Nigerian to bag the award. Other Super Eagles players who have won it include Daniel Amokachi (1992, 1994), Victor Ikpeba (1993), Godwin Okpara (1995), Celestine Babayaro (1996), and Paul Onuachu.

Onuachu was the last Nigerian to win it in 2021.

Kevin Denkey, Moumou Dagano, Souleymane Oulare, and Onuachu are the other Genk players to get the Ebony Shoe award.

Following the award, his club said the “entire Genk family is extremely proud of this achievement”. The blue-white believe that,” With two match days to go, he still has a chance to become top scorer of the season”.
