22 Kano Athletes Die In Road Accident After Sports Festival

According to Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials, 22 people died in a fatal road crash on the Kano–Kaduna highway on Saturday afternoon.

According to reports, the victims were members of the Kano State contingent leaving the Ogun State National Sports Festival.

The team reportedly had been traveling since Thursday night, shortly after the National Sports Festival was over.

Ado Salisu, one of the survivors, confirmed to journalists that the accident occurred just before the survivors’ scheduled arrival in Kano.

A Toyota Coaster Bus with the registration number KN041 A17 was involved in the incident, which took place at 12:30 p.m. at Gadar Yankifi in the Garun Malam Local Government Area.

32 people were in the crash, including 31 males and one female, according to a press release from the FRSC Kano Sector Command. 22 of those killed at the scene, while the rest of the passengers were harmed in various ways.

According to CRC Abdullahi Labaran, Public Relations Officer of the FRSC Kano Sector Command, “The injured victims, as well as the remains of the deceased, have been taken to Nasarawa Specialist Hospital in Kano.”

Although authorities believe the crash was caused by over-speeding and possible driver fatigue or mechanical failure, preliminary investigations suggest that the crash was caused by unknown factors.

Bature also reaffirmed the FRSC’s ongoing commitment to accident prevention and road safety.

We firmly advise drivers to refrain from dangerous behaviors like speeding too fast, overheating, and breaking traffic regulations. He claimed that these actions continue to lead to avoidable tragedies on our roads.

In response to the incident, FRSC officials say they will increase patrols and public education campaigns to educate drivers about safety practices.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every road user must contribute to making our roads safer, CRC Labaran remarked.

Ruthless Sinner Marches Into French Open Fourth Round

Jiri Lehecka, the 34-year-old Italian who won the fourth round, was eliminated by top seed Jannik Sinner in straight sets at Roland Garros.

The first-ranked men’s player defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-1, and 6-2 in a dominant display of power-hitting.

Sinner thanked his coach Simone Vagnozzi for his victory, saying, “Today I was playing really, really well, especially during (the first) two and a half sets. I was so happy.”

After Frenchman Arthur Fils’ injury forced him to withdraw, the 23-year-old will next face 17th seed Andrey Rublev in the final 16. Rublev received a bye through the third round.

Sinner’s impressive return to action this year after receiving a three-month doping suspension has yet to be broken.

After successfully navigating his way through the first five matches, he quickly made it to the Italian Open earlier in May, ultimately falling to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

Since returning to Rome in 2004, Sinner has now won four sets without conceding a set.

Liverpool Sign Frimpong To Replace Alexander-Arnold

The English Premier League champions Bayer Leverkusen have announced the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Liverpool, the club announced Friday.

Although there was no word on the contract’s terms or fee, reports in British media claimed Frimpong had signed a five-year deal worth 35 million euros (£29.95 million) with Anfield.

The signing of Frimpong came shortly after Liverpool announced Trent Alexander-Arnold would join Real Madrid in time for the Club World Cup.

England full-back Alexander-Arnold appears to be ready to be replaced by Frimpong, with Liverpool activating the 24-year-old Dutch international’s release request.

He played a key role in Leverkusen’s 22-year reign as the team that won their first Bundesliga title in 2023/24 and finished second overall.

Conor Bradley, a Northern Ireland defender, recently signed a new four-year contract with Liverpool, who will face Frimpong at right-back.

Before making a move to Leverkusen in January 2021, Frimpong rose through Manchester City’s youth ranks and then joined Celtic in September 2019.

He will now be joining Liverpool’s Netherlands squad, which will also include club captain Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

Liverpool are also interested in signing Florian Wirtz from Freiburg for a fee that includes Leverkusen&nbsp.

Liverpool made a better bid for the Germany midfielder of £109 million ($146 million), according to reports from earlier on Friday.

Add-on clauses in Liverpool’s second offer for Wirtz would make him the club’s most expensive signing in its history.

Bayern Munich and Manchester City have also expressed interest in Wirtz, but it is believed that he made it known to Leverkusen that he wants to join Liverpool before the new year.

After helping Leverkusen win the Bundesliga, the 22-year-old became one of Europe’s most highly regarded young playmakers.

For his contribution to that 2023/24 triumph, Wirtz was named Bundesliga player of the year.

He scored 10 goals in 31 Bundesliga games this season for Leverkusen, finishing second behind Bayern in the title race.

Since making his Leverkusen debut at age 17 after relocating from Cologne in 2020, Wirtz has scored 57 goals in 197 games.

‘I Think He Wants To Stay’: Amorim Hopeful On Fernandes Future

In light of rumors about a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, Bruno Fernandes’ captain, Ruben Amorim, said on Friday that he thinks he wants to stay at Manchester United.

With a 3-1 victory over Hong Kong, Fernandes’ opener, with Chido Obi, a teenage substitute, scoring twice, set up United’s game.

During the post-season break, manager Amorim has plenty to think about after taking over from Erik ten Hag during the campaign but leading United to a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League.

The future of key player Fernandes, who is reportedly considering a big-money move to Al Hilal, is foremost among his concerns.

When asked if Fernandes, 30,’s last appearance in a United shirt, did Amorim respond, “I don’t think so, I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think so.”

He appears to be seeing some actions and attempts to alter everything, and I believe he wants to stay.

Amorim continued, “I talk to him, I explained some things, and I just have that feeling when you talk to someone, I think you have that feeling if he wants to stay.”

United were underwhelming in the first half of their second post-season friendly on Wednesday, being beaten and booed off in Malaysia as they put a dent in their campaign.

After being let down by a soft Hong Kong goal, Obi made a smart turn and scored again five minutes later, heading home with a glancing header.

United ended their Asia trip on a high note with a late header from Ayden Heaven.

Before going off, Portugal international Fernandes had a successful opening half at the 40, 000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium, which was about 85 percent capacity.

Despite having the appearance to be leaving Old Trafford, Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho also started.

In southern China, where it was light rain all afternoon and evening, Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund were the first regulars to feature.

The hosts took the lead in the 19th minute with their first attack, but Fernandes and Garnacho were in the first half against a Hong Kong team that was ranked 153rd in the world.

Tom Heaton, the stand-in goalkeeper for United, made a poor save from Juninho, who was born in Brazil, who slipped into the net.

Amorim had his hands on his hips as he sat.

Fernandes should have scored when clean through, but he was denied because of the raindrops and the wind.

Sabalenka Powers Into French Open Last 16

A dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory over Serbia’s Olga Danilovic on Friday helped top seed Aryna Sabalenka advance to the French Open last 16.

The 27-year-old next faces American Amanda Anisimova, a 16th-seeded American, to advance to the quarter-finals.

In a third-round match, Anisimova defeated Danish 22nd seed Clara Tauson 7-6 (7 / 4) 6-4.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic successfully continued his Grand Slam record attempt at Roland Garros while Jannik Sinner and Richard Gasquet’s retiring career came to an end with a one-sided victory at the French Open on Thursday.

With a score of 6-3, 6-0, and 6-4, World No. 1 Sinner, who was playing at the tournament for the 22nd and final time against the 38-year-old Gasquet, was unaffected.

Sinner made his comeback from a three-month suspension earlier in May by reaching the final before falling to defending Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

He saved three break points to end the first set before dominating the match on Court Philippe Chatrier in excellent form against Gasquet.

Before the hearing broke for an adjournment, Doyle reportedly held back tears while wearing a black suit, white shirt, and grey tie inside the courtroom.

When a dark Ford Galaxy slammed into Liverpool supporters to celebrate their club’s record-equalling 20th English top-flight title, 79 people, aged between 9 and 78, were hurt overall.

There were no fatalities.

According to Sims, assistant chief constable Jenny of Merseyside Police, seven people are still hospitalized, Sims told reporters on Thursday.

Following a “complex and ongoing investigation,” according to Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson Sarah Hammond.

She stated that “prosecutors and police are working at a steady rate to review a sizable amount of evidence.”

“There are numerous witness statements and pieces of videotape footage. Every victim should be treated the way that the law demands.

According to the UK media, Doyle, a businessman and former marine, has three teenage children and lives in a suburb of Liverpool.

As the investigation gets closer, Hammond said, “all charges will be kept under review.”

Scenes of joy turned into horror as hundreds of thousands of Reds fans gathered in the city center of Liverpool to watch the club’s top players lead a long parade.

The car was seen running over people and bouncing off its bonnet in images of social media.

One child was among the four people trapped beneath the car, which needed to be lifted to get them out, according to fire services.

In other videos that were circulated online, angry fans filmed the car being stopped and swarmed as police tried to stop them.

In a rare online ruse to combat misinformation, police quickly ruled out terrorism and revealed the suspect was a white British man.
