Stick or twist with Joao Pedro? The FPL talking point

Images courtesy of Getty

Joao Pedro of Chelsea ranks third in the Fantasy Premier League, trailing only Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

However, Joao Pedro’s form has stagnated while that talented pair is still producing.

In four of his previous games, the Brazilian has failed to make a comeback.

With Sunderland set to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, FPL expert Pras Singhal examines the arguments in favor and against moving forward in this regard.

The selling case

Pras Singhal’s goal output, which only produced two shots over the previous four Gameweeks and a whopping 0.07 xG, poses a deeper problem.

Without a strong striker, he is required to play minutes in the middle, which is inconsistent with his play, which relies heavily on attacking half spaces.

The case must continue.

Pras Singhal: Joao Pedro was suspended for Wednesday’s game against Ajax because of the late red card received in the Champions League against Benfica, so he is almost certain to start against Sunderland on Saturday.

Joao Pedro performed significantly better in the number 10 position when Marc Guiu was hired to lead the attack in Gameweek 8, and should that pattern continue, it will only increase the Brazilian’s ability to attack returns.

Chelsea will have some of the best games in store, including Sunderland at home, Tottenham away, Wolves at home, and Burnley at home, all of which have some goals in store.

Additionally, Mateta won’t be playing for Arsenal this week, making that week not ideal.

Palestinian teen killed in Israeli raid on West Bank as settlers rampage

In the latest violence against civilians in the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian teenager has died from wounds sustained in an Israeli military raid on a Palestinian teenager’s camp in Nablus, as a fragile ceasefire in Gaza leaves little hope for Palestinians in the destroyed enclave.

Mohammed Ahmed Abu Haneen, 18, died on Friday from wounds sustained in the Israeli raid, according to the Wafa news agency.

Additionally, Israeli forces stormed the West Bank’s Aqaba town, north of Tubas, and made several arrests in Hebron and Tal earlier today.

In the West Bank, according to the Israeli army, 44 Palestinians were detained last week. According to a military statement, Israel wanted all those detained and carried out operations in various areas of the territory. Additionally, troops seize weapons and conduct interrogations during the operations, according to the statement.

Mohammad al-Hallaq, 10, was fatally shot by Israeli forces last week while playing football in Hebron’s Ar-Rihiya.

Since October 7, 2023, more than 1, 000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, according to the UN.

According to the UN, 206 boys and 7 girls make up the majority of the victims, with 206 of them children. At least seven people with disabilities and 20 women are also included in the total. Palestinians who passed away in Israeli custody during the same time are not included, according to the UN.

Nearly 2, 000 Palestinian detainees who were released from Israeli jails who were reportedly showing signs of abuse have been helped by the United States-brokered Gaza ceasefire agreement.

Numerous Palestinian bodies that have been returned show signs of torture and execution.

Israeli settlers have been systematically destroying Palestinian property near Ramallah, destroying it daily with impunity, in addition to the military’s ongoing crackdown on the occupied territory.

This morning at dawn, settlers in Deir Dibwan, east of the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, set fire to a number of Palestinian vehicles, according to Wafa. In the village of Beit Iksa, northwest of Jerusalem, Israeli farmers were also attacked by Israelis as they were preparing to harvest olives.

A Palestinian woman was picking olives in Turmus Aya, Israel, when she was brutally assaulted on Sunday.

Afaf Abu Alia, 53, was the victim of a brain hemorrhage as a result.

One Palestinian witness told Al Jazeera, “The attack started with about 10 settlers, but more settlers continued to join.” By the end, the army would have protected 40 people, according to one analyst. We couldn’t defend ourselves because we were outnumbered.

In the occupied West Bank over the past two years, settlers have attacked Palestinians nearly 3, 000 times, according to UN data from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has also experienced a sharp escalation in violence since October 7, 2023, according to UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

According to UNRWA, “the increasing annexation of the West Bank is consistently occurring in a gross violation of international law,” referring to the expansion and recognition of illegal Israeli settlements.

US enacts law governing Israel’s annexation.

Senior US officials have been adamant it won’t happen under their watch after the Israeli parliament approved a bill to formalize the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.

In response to the growing opposition to an Israeli parliamentary motion that seeks to officially annex the occupied Palestinian territory, US President Donald Trump declared on Thursday, “Israel is not going to do anything with the West Bank.”

Trump stated earlier this day in an interview with Time Magazine that the US is firmly opposed to an Israeli annexation. “It won’t occur,” he said. It won’t occur. Because I promised to the Arab nations, it won’t happen. And now, you can’t, Trump remarked to Time.

While in Israel, US Vice President JD Vance also claimed that Trump’s policy is to keep the West Bank from being annexed by Israel and that the parliamentary vote in favor of annexation was a “very stupid political stunt” that he “personally” took some insults from.

‘A lot of things in their favour’ – why Hearts could win title

SNS

After the top two meet at Tynecastle on Sunday at noon, Heart of Midlothian could be eight points clear of Celtic, who are currently the Scottish Premiership champions.

Tony Bloom, a heartthrob, made a mockery of the Edinburgh club’s ownership in August by claiming that they had a “very good chance of at least being second” this year because it was historically difficult to split the Old Firm from them.

His words now appear prophetic, almost a quarter of the way through the season. Hearts has since taken 22 of its 24 points, and the team seems to be growing more confident and reputable with each game.

Following Sunday’s defeat at Dundee, manager Brendan Rodgers publicly criticised the quality of his side, and Celtic’s fans are staging weekly protests against the club’s board.

Rangers are currently 13 points ahead of Hearts, but Danny Rohl, the team’s new head coach, will take the pieces that were left over from Russell Martin’s forgettable 123-day reign.

Rarely is a team as well-equipped to take on the role as Hearts, and Rarely is the Old Firm so susceptible to challenges from outside of Glasgow.

One only needs to recall the previous season to raise caution.

Aberdeen also had 22 points at this point, but a spectacular collapse led to their eventual fifth-place finish, 39 points behind Celtic.

If you look further, Hearts fans will recall their incredible 2005-2006 season under George Burley.

They once had a point advantage over Celtic, though they admittedly had played more. Hearts finished second, though Burton was quickly dismissed in the process.

The difference between then and now is that McInnes is failing, and few managers have better knowledge of Scottish football than the former Aberdeen and Kilmarnock boss, despite unanticipated circumstances.

“A lot of things in Hearts’ favor.”

Before their first match of the season, the top two of the Premiership square square square square square face off for the first time this year, it is difficult to get away from the divergent atmospheres.

The hype would explode if Hearts defeated Celtic in front of their own fans at Ibrox, where Rangers have already defeated them.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton stated on the BBC’s Monday Night Club, “I think Hearts can win the title, I really do.”

“Partly because of the way they have hired, partly because of the manager, partly because of their form, and partly because of Celtic and Rangers’ playing style.”

“I don’t see a way out for Rangers and Celtic until January,” he said. There are many things to consider when it comes to European football, but hearts don’t have one.

(19) in the division, Hearts have allowed the league’s seven goals from set pieces.

They also have the best conversion rate (15.3%), and they have the second-most shots on target in the league with only 46 behind Hibernian.

Only Celtic (5. 5) and the reigning champions (6. 10) both defensively outperform Hearts’ expected goals against tally (6. 7) and only concede less conceded (5. 2).

In almost every department but possession and passes completed, they rank better than Rangers, who were held to a low by Norway’s Brann on Thursday in the Europa League.

The expectation is “we can do them,” ex-rangers forward Steven Thompson told Sportsound before the Celtic game next week.

That mental shift is fantastic. I don’t see it diminishing, and I believe they will continue to exist or be there for a while.

Michael Stewart is unsure whether his former club can pull off the improbable and win Glasgow’s title for the first time in 40 years despite the fervent optimism surrounding Hearts.

He said, “Hearts have got a wonderful opportunity to strike back and strike back.” It’s incredible what you can do to get eight points clear after nine games.

They do, of course, have a chance to win the title. Do they intend to do it? realistically speaking, I don’t believe so.

Are Hearts’ forward duo the best in class?

In order to support their recruitment strategy, Bloom’s investment and Hearts’ access to his Jamestown Analytics company have received a lot of positive feedback.

Total unknowns Alexandros Kyziridis and Claudio Braga both signed for Slovakia’s Aalesunds and Zemplin Michalovce, respectively.

However, they have completely transformed the game: Kyziridis leads the division’s assisters, and Braga is at the top of the scoring charts.

Stuart Findlay, a more well-known player, and fellow centre-back Craig Halkett, who both sported a goal threat from set pieces, seamlessly integrated into the backline.

Alexander Schwolow, who left Union Berlin on a free transfer, has now kept four consecutive clean sheets since Zander Clark’s replacement.

Former Scotland striker Thompson continued, “Players are desperate to get in that team.” They are brilliant defensively, but they are entertaining in the forward.

There are all the warning signs that Aberdeen won’t be as successful as they were last season when they capitulated. Although they will lose, I can’t see them going back and dropping like a stone in two or three games.

Because these kinds of events don’t occur too frequently, I believe they will strengthen once more once they enter January.

Celtics “exhibited negativity in their performances,” according to legend.

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

Fans and pundits have been consistently questioning Celtic’s transfer business, with the consensus that the champions are worse than they were last year.

Rodgers’ squad is a mixed bag, most notably out wide, with the majority of his wingers preferring to play left.

None of the summer arrivals have the same level of quality as Nicolas Kuhn and Kyogo Furuhashi, and Arne Engels has only started five of his previous 14 games this year. Jota is a long-term injury absentee.

Rodgers was already anticipating the end of the year when he complained about his lack of quality following Sunday’s defeat at Dundee. Kelechi Iheanacho and Alistair Johnston were both sidelined in the Europa League match against Austria’s Sturm Graz on Thursday, but Celtic made up the loss.

He claimed that the team lost a lot of firepower and goals.

There’s no way you’ll enter a race and say, “I want you to drive it like a Ferrari,” when given the keys to a Honda Civic. It won’t occur, in fact.

I must find the solutions until something fundamental changes.

Stewart isn’t certain that the January window will provide the solutions Rodgers needs, though.

Yes, they will have a window open for signings in January, but Stewart claimed on Sportscene that the summer transfer window was “absolutely debacle.”

It worries them, they say. The team’s performance and lack of synergy have been the result of the negative attitude, lack of synergy, and lethargy in the transfer window.

From 300 sit-ups a day to 6,000 calories – inside Aspinall’s fight camp

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

Tom Aspinall arrives at his father Andy’s house, which is just around the corner, each morning, dropping his children off at the same school where they used to go when they were younger.

The magic happens in Atherton, Greater Manchester, just 20 minutes away from the gym.

Since he was eight years old, Andy has been Aspinall’s head coach, giving his son the perfect foundation to develop and win the first UFC heavyweight title.

The pair’s conversation in the car can cover a variety of topics, but for the past three months they have focused on the best way to defeat Ciryl Gane in his first UFC 321 victory.

As he recounts the anecdote about Tom’s left hand, Andy makes a warm, jovial joke about how they don’t always agree on topics to work on in the gym on the day.

However, this dynamic is healthy, and the Aspinalls’ philosophy focuses on encouraging constructive criticism in addition to a desire to improve.

The camp’s foundation is based on this philosophy as it prepares for former interim champion Gane, who is likely to be Aspinall’s biggest test of his 18-fight career to date.

Why is cardio so important at Aspinall Camp?

In order to face Gane, Aspinall and his team have significantly changed: they have given cardio prioritization in comparison to earlier fight camps.

Aspinall tells BBC Sport, “My opponent moves really well, so I’m going to have to keep up with him moving.”

He exhibits excellent athleticism. I obviously want to be able to match or be as close to his as possible because of his excellent cardio.

In the UFC, Aspinall is not used to protracted fights.

Eight of the nine fights ended in the first round, with Aspinall having the shortest, shortest average fighttime in UFC history, two minutes, two seconds.

Aspinall, who was once a mastermind of Andy, now runs his own gym where he trains alongside Modestas Bukauskas and Ante Delija from the UFC.

Andy’s attention can be drawn to Aspinall because only four to eight fighters fight in a single day and only two spar simultaneously.

Andy says, “I’ve always been in his side.”

“For the past four years, I’ve been doing it every day with him to make sure I don’t miss anything.” I can see it all.

Aspinall has prioritized body work, which can include a daily 200 burpees, 300 sit-ups, and numerous sets of 10 press-ups, to increase his cardio.

This camp does a lot of that, says Andy, not about moving a weight, pulling something, or throwing something. It’s about moving yourself.

Aspinall’s cardio has improved, but he still prefers to end the competition early.

10 liters of water, calorie-free, and 6000 calories

Aspinall has consumed more than 6, 000 calories per day and consumed between eight and ten liters of water to support the extra cardio.

Are you prepared for what’s going to happen? Before describing his strict diet, Aspinall warns BBC Sport.

Porridge is typically eaten for breakfast along with a few protein shakes, including peanut butter and blueberries, which can contain more than 1, 000 calories.

He consumes eloctrolytes before bed and then replenishes with a banana and another protein shake.

In order to prepare for his late afternoon training session, he has a meal of chicken, rice, yoghurt, and fruit.

Aspinall finishes the day off with a substantial serving of rice, eggs, and steak, and then finishes with a satisfying protein shake.

What data are gathered from this quiz?

Realism, reactions, and tape

Aspinall places importance on getting enough sleep when he returns home from training, but Andy frequently watches Gane fight footage.

Tom watches him, but for eight to twelve weeks, he won’t have any say in what we’ll do, Andy claims.

Aspinall and his team respect Gane, and they are aware that heavyweight MMA can sometimes be turned around in terms of preparation. This is because they are familiar with the nature of the fight.

“You never know what you’re doing outside of fight training, whether it’s working or not, until you get into the fight,” says Andy.

“Tom needs to be trained to be as good as he can be, and his body needs to be able to react,” I simply said.

Before the American retired, Aspinall waited 19 months as interim champion to realize that he would fight in the title defense against Jon Jones.

15 months ago, Aspinall faced Curtis Blaydes for the interim title.

Aspinall declares his desire to restart the heavyweight division at the end of the interview.

“I’m just interested in being active. They haven’t been very active, according to Aspinall, which is one of the things about the heavyweight champion.

Trump administration to open up Alaska wildlife refuge to drilling

The Trump administration has finalised plans to allow oil and gas drilling in a national wildlife refuge spanning pristine Indigenous land in Alaska, reigniting long-simmering tensions about conserving one of the United States’s environmental jewels.

The US Department of the Interior announced at an event on Thursday that it plans to open up the coastal plain of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which sits on traditional Inupiaq and Gwich’in Indigenous land, to resource exploration.

In a news release, it said the move, which paves the way for lease sales within the refuge’s 1.5 million-acre (631, 309-hectare) coastal plain, was part of a “sweeping package of actions to boost energy development, modernise land and resource management across Alaska”.

President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans previously pledged to reopen this portion of the refuge to possible development.

Announcing the move, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said, “from day one, President Trump directed us to unlock Alaska’s energy and resource potential while honouring commitments to the state and local communities”.

A Republican bill featuring major tax breaks and spending cuts, passed during the summer, called for at least four lease sales within the Alaska refuge over a 10-year period.

“By reopening the Coastal Plain and advancing key infrastructure, we are strengthening energy independence, creating jobs and supporting Alaska’s communities while driving economic growth across the state”, Burgum said.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain – which sits near the tip of the Alaska Peninsula, and contains internationally recognised habitat for migrating waterfowl – is considered sacred land to Indigenous Gwich’in communities, who oppose the drilling.

Conservationists have also condemned the move. Meda DeWitt, Alaska senior manager with The Wilderness Society, said it places “corporate interests above the lives, cultures and spiritual responsibilities of the people whose survival depends on … the health of the Arctic Refuge”.

Supportive of the drilling, however, are the Inupiaq Indigenous community in the town of Kaktovik, which sits within the refuge. They consider responsible oil development to be key to their region’s economic wellbeing and development.

The Kaktovik Inupiat Corp, the native village corporation founded in 1973 that owns the land in and around Kaktovik, praised this week’s announcement from the Trump administration.

“It is encouraging to see decision makers in Washington advancing policies that respect our voice and support Kaktovik’s long term success”, its president, Charles “CC” Lampe, said in a statement.

In Thursday’s announcement, Burgum also said a land exchange deal had been completed aimed at building a road connecting the communities of King Cove and Cold Bay that would run through Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.

While King Cove residents have long called for a road to be opened, conservationists and tribal leaders have promised to launch a legal challenge.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski told reporters she had been fighting for land access for King Cove throughout her tenure, but said it was in everyone’s interest to ensure the road is built with minimal disturbance to local wildlife.
