Coventry ‘statement’ and Blades must stay calm – Championship takeaways

The third Championship weekend of the season brought more drama with 29 goals across 11 games.

‘ Coventry are full of goals ‘

Coventry City, who reached the play-offs last season, laid down a marker with a 7-1 thrashing of QPR which manager Frank Lampard described as a “a performance of quality, mentality and attitude”.

Parkin: “Coventry are full of goals – that’s 12 in two games. One of my concerns with them last year was there was an over-reliance on Jack Rudoni and he played well and contributed, but to be getting other goals from the likes of Victor Torp and]Brandon] Thomas-Asante, Haji Wright, gives them a really good opportunity to emulate what they did last season.

” My one criticism towards the tail-end of last year was they were a little bit one-dimensional, a lot of balls into the box, but they seem to be scoring different types of goals.

“Normally teams suffer a hangover when you get beaten in the play-offs, but nobody anticipated them getting there last year and such has been the improvement under Frank Lampard they can put that to one side and focus on the positives of the second half of last season and really attack this year.

‘ Worrying ‘ scoreline for ‘ threadbare ‘ QPR

QPR, on the other hand, conceded five Coventry goals inside the first 45 minutes alone.

And while Richard Kone scored a late consolation, the 7-1 defeat leaves them still searching for a win under new manager Julien Stephan.

Parkin:” There’s players that are getting up to speed. ]Richard] Kone came on and got a goal and I think he’ll be a really good signing, but they’ve taken him and a couple of others from lower levels and they look a little bit patched up, the squad looks a little bit threadbare.

“I didn’t anticipate them losing in that manner, it’s pretty alarming.

” For the QPR fans it will be a bit of a wake-up call about how good Marti Cifuentes did. It encapsulates to me that he was getting the utmost out of a squad that’s not one of the strongest in the Championship.

Off-field issues bringing Owls players together

Bailey-Tye Cadamarteri celebrates with Sheffield Wednesday team-mate Charlie McNeill as both men raise their arms PA Media

Sheffield Wednesday looked to be heading for a third defeat after conceding two first-half goals to Wrexham.

But the troubled South Yorkshire side retaliated through Barry Bannan before Bailey Cadamarteri levelled nine minutes from time to earn them a first point of the season.

Parkin: “They’re patched up in terms of their bench, with young players, but the 11’s actually pretty good, experienced, they’ve got some leaders.

” Sheffield Wednesday have been competitive in every game – yes, they lost at home to Stoke, but against Leicester on the opening day they did well and and again against Wrexham, so I’m not surprised.

‘ Patience ‘ required but Selles needs a result

Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles stands in the dugout watching the match action with his lips pursed PA Media

Sheffield United’s spiral from the play-off final defeat to Sunderland in May continues, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Millwall and are bottom of the Championship.

Ruben Selles, who replaced manager Chris Wilder in the summer, has now lost his first three matches in charge.

Parkin: “It’s the flip side of Coventry. Sheffield United were]in the promotion race] for so long and so many of those players would have almost been able to touch the Premier League or been pretty certain that they were going to make it. To lose in the manner they did takes some getting over.

” Some of the individuals probably still think they could move on and the squad is thin in areas. They still need one or two new players and he’s]Selles] finding out about what’s the best way to go formation-wise, and personnel-wise.

‘ Brilliant ‘ Stoke and Boro win again

Stoke and Middlesbrough maintained their 100% starts to the campaign and both have three wins from three games.

Stoke held on with 10 men to beat Southampton 2-1 away, while Middlesbrough won 2-1 at Norwich.

Parkin: “Brilliant stories, both of them.

” Middlesbrough were not really expected to hit the ground running, they had a terrible pre-season – a new manager, a new change in style, new formation with the back three, so I probably didn’t have them to be so defensively good.

“That was the first goal they’ve conceded today in the three games.

Freddie Starr died ‘penniless’ with no family contact as comedian’s children kept distance

Freddie Starr was one of the most recognisable faces on TV and a comedy icon, but the beloved performer died alone and penniless in 2019, leaving fans concerned for the fate of his funeral arrangements

Comedy legend Freddie Starr, once amongst Britain’s most cherished performers, was given a proper send-off in the UK after a kind-hearted stranger stepped forward to pay for his funeral when the star died without a penny to his name. The entertainer, who raked in fortunes during his heyday in the 1970s and 80s whilst hosting his own BBC programme, succumbed to a heart attack in 2019 aged 76.

When he passed away, he was residing in a humble one-bedroom property on Spain’s Costa del Sol and was allegedly facing the prospect of becoming homeless.

Fears quickly mounted that the quirky comic would end up with a pauper’s funeral in Spain – a basic burial funded by taxpayers for those without means, typically in an anonymous or shared plot – worlds apart from his desire to be interred back on home soil.

His Bulgarian carer Nelly Georgieva, who discovered his remains, disclosed that she hadn’t been in contact with his relatives for years, casting doubt over his final send-off until a compassionate stranger intervened, reports the Daily Record.

Speaking at the time, Nelly revealed: “Freddie had bad feelings about back home, he felt the British people had deserted him.

“It would be terrible if Freddie ends up being buried in a pauper’s grave. I don’t want to see that happen but I’m worried if I tried to do something about it his relatives would object,” she added.

Starr, who left behind six children, three former spouses and a widow, departed this world with nothing but outstanding debts and no concrete plans for his burial.

When the late comedian found himself without a benefactor, Sheffield-based funeral director Michael Fogg, who had never crossed paths with Starr, nobly shouldered the costs of his repatriation and funeral, asking nothing from Starr’s family.

Mr Fogg explained his altruistic act: “Anyone who can make a funeral director laugh must be a bloody good comedian. And Freddie Starr could make me laugh. He shouldn’t be buried in foreign land, he should be brought back to be in his own country.”

Fogg’s magnanimity ensured that Starr was returned to British soil, sparing the beloved entertainer the indignity of an anonymous pauper’s burial abroad.

Undeterred by public curiosity, Mr Fogg elaborated: “For those asking why I am paying, well it is my money, it is my business and that is what I want to spend my money on.

“He should be reunited with the people he loved and his family. He shouldn’t be buried in foreign land, he should be brought back to be in his own country.”

‘Maverick’ Braga goes from ‘hell’ to heaven at Hearts

To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser.

Hearts forward Claudio Braga went from enduring the “weekend from hell” to being the man who inspired his team’s comeback from 3-0 down seven days later at a raucous Tynecastle.

Braga missed the crucial penalty which meant Hearts tumbled out of the League Cup at St Mirren last time out, but after coming on at half-time against Motherwell on Saturday he scored twice, was involved in another goal, and just generally inspired his ailing side.

“He can be that talisman for us when he’s playing in that sort of free-flowing vein with confidence oozing from him,” Hearts head coach Derek McInnes said.

‘Maverick’ Braga stakes claim

McInnes was asked the question about Braga’s role in the team following the 3-3 draw, and he answered plainly, saying he chose James Wilson for his ability to run in behind and stretch Motherwell.

Braga, he explained, tends to drop off the front line in the same way as first-choice striker Lawrence Shankland.

“Sometimes Claudio comes too deep,” McInnes told BBC Scotland. “We wanted to try and get four on their last line – we go with two wide players and two strikers against their back four.

“We want Claudio to run spaces more, play down the sides of people more, and some of his best performances for us – as it has been with a few of the foreign guys – has been that impact from the bench, when the game becomes a bit more stretched, and a bit more space afforded to him.”

It was an insightful and honest answer from the Hearts head coach, one which fans may see the logic of.

But the nature of Braga’s performance as a substitute, along with his general output this season, means the case for him to start is becoming impossible to ignore.

He only played the second half on Saturday but ended with six shots – more than any player has had in any full game in the Premiership this season.

Two of those were well taken goals – the first a brilliant run in behind to exploit Motherwell’s high line, before driving beyond Paul McGinn and slamming the ball home from a tight angle.

BBC Sport

Braga left a few goals out there, too. He was denied by Calum Ward when through on goal, and again in stoppage time as the Motherwell goalkeeper pushed his effort on to a post.

The Portuguese also had a header from a corner he should have buried. Suggesting he merely brought energy from the bench would do Braga a grave disservice.

But it was the starting point. He was constantly hassling Motherwell, and his touch map below shows he popped up everywhere.

He had the joint highest amount of dribbles for Hearts, and his ability to take defenders on and get a strike away lead to the first goal of the comeback.

“The message I got from the coach and from everybody – even the players – is to come in with energy,” Braga told BBC Scotland. “I think that’s one of my best attributes, so I tried to come in with energy.

“It was a draw, but I feel like we could do more. We definitely could do more. We proved that in 45 minutes.”

It is that determined attitude, as well as his ability, which means Braga is already a fans’ favourite at Tynecastle.

He will surely now start against Livingston next week after five goals in eight appearances.

“Braga is a bit of a maverick – he’s not scared to take it under pressure or when the team is 3-0 down,” former Hearts head coach Steven Naismith said on Sportscene.

“As much as he’s a maverick and he’ll drop the shoulder or do a Cruyff turn, he has the natural instinct of a forward.

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Braga part of Hearts puzzle

Helped by Tony Bloom’s Jamestown Analytics, Hearts have recruited 13 players this summer.

Whether Braga should start or not is only one of the issues McInnes is grappling with, as he works out his best team and formation in this early part of the season.

He switched to a 4-4-2 for this match but was again forced to change personnel early in the match as Motherwell dominated.

Across Hearts’ last three games, McInnes has made seven half-time substitutions, which suggests the starting side have not clicked.

“Maybe I just need to start picking the right team for the start rather than having to turn to my bench,” the Hearts head coach joked.

The lack of a natural right-back with Christian Borchgrevink injured meant Michael Steinwender was shoehorned in, and it is an area they may look to add before the transfer window shuts.

“I’m not sure about Borchgrevink anyway, that’s he’s good enough,” former Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart said on Sportsound.

“They desperately need a right-back to allow them to give them the balance to play the back four. They need to get greater quality in the middle of the park to feed these wide guys.

“The manager is still clearly trying to find his best team.”

South Africa bounce back to beat Australia

Australia (10) 22

South Africa bounced back from defeat to Australia in last week’s Rugby Championship opener with a battling 30-22 victory over the Wallabies in rain-soaked Cape Town.

The boot of Handre Pollard proved decisive as the 31-year-old kicked 15 points, made up of three penalty goals and three conversions.

Canan Moodie, Kwagga Smith and Eben Etzebeth went over for the world champions, who blew a 22-0 lead to lose 38-22 in Johannesburg last time out.

“It was greasy out there, but we played well,” said Pollard.

“Our defence was good at times, though we also gave away some silly penalties. There is a lot to work on, but we take this result.

“We have wings who are unbelievable in the air and it is something the boys put a lot of effort into. We know there is a bigger plan with our squad and we trust the process.”

Australia also scored three tries through Corey Toole, Max Jorgensen and Brandon Paenga-Amosa but were unable to replicate last weekend’s stunning comeback.

They came close to a losing bonus point, but James O’Connor missed two penalty attempts in the final few minutes. It means the Wallabies sit second in the table with five points from two matches.

“It was a great physical battle out there and I am super proud of my boys. We fought right to the end,” said Australia captain Fraser McReight.

“It has been a tough two weeks over here. There were a few moments where if we got the ball back our way, the result could have been different. But that is the beauty of rugby.”

De Bruyne Strikes In Napoli’s Strong Start To Scudetto Defence At Sassuolo

With a simple 2-0 victory over Sassuolo, Kevin De Bruyne gave his debut for Napoli on Saturday, starting their title defense.

De Bruyne opened his account for Napoli in the 57th minute when his free-kick swung in from the left flank and evaded everyone before nestling in the far corner. It was the top signing of the summer transfer window in Italy.

De Bruyne ensured that Napoli would start winning the new campaign in Reggio Emilia with a header header from Scott McTominay, who had already left last season.

With 12 goals and another impressive performance for Antonio Conte’s side, McTominay was the star of Napoli’s second Scudetto triumph in three years.

The Scotland midfielder had no luck to double his evening’s total when his rasping first-time effort slammed against the crossbar just before half-time.

Napoli’s attempt to win the league title after the historic success of 2023 ended in 10th place is unfulfilled, not even when Diego Maradona strutted his stuff in southern Italy in the 1980s.

Conte has chosen to stay put, which has given fans hope for another great season, in contrast to Luciano Spalletti, who left immediately after winning the league and immediately destabilized Napoli.

Without Romelu Lukaku, the current team will have to compete in the first few months of Napoli’s quest for a fifth league title.

De Bruyne’s Belgium teammate, Lorenzo Lucca, struggled to get into the game on his Napoli debut, and his thigh muscle tear could keep him out until the end of the year.

Sassuolo won the Serie B title last year, but they were outclassed when they made a second-place finish. The match was finished with 10 men after debutant Ismael Kone was given a two-game penalty in the 79th minute.

Luka Modric will start AC Milan’s first match of the campaign against promoted Cremonese as the veteran star kicks off a new chapter in northern Italy after 13 successful years at Real Madrid.

Reimis Smith grabbed a hat-trick as Catalan Dragons ended a losing run of six Super League games with a comfortable 38-4 victory against a toothless Castleford Tigers at Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Joel Tomkins side had posted just one win in their previous 13 games in all competitions, a run stretching back to a victory against Wakefield Trinity in April.

But against an error-strewn display from Cas, the French side shaded a tight first half before stretching clear with five unanswered tries in the second period with Smith adding his third try seconds before the hooter.

Cas took the lead through 18-year-old debutant Alfie Lindsey assisted by quick hands from Will Tate to go over in the right corner on 13 minutes.

And the visitors way given had several more sights of the Catalan goalline only to fluff their lines when tries beckoned.

They trailed by just one score at 10-4 at the break after the first two of Smith’s touchdowns.

But in the second period Catalans were gifted an opening try when Daejarn Asi missed touch after a penalty was awarded for a high tackle and Fouad Yaha ran in from the following set.

From there to the hooter it was all handling errors, poor decision making and missed tackles by Castleford as Luke Keary, Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet, Alrix Da Costa all crossed and, with the hooter about to sound, Smith added a runaway third.
