The Federal Government has directed immediate reforms in the emergency care services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, following public outrage over delayed medical attention to accident victims at the hospital’s emergency unit.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, issued the directive during an unscheduled visit to the facility on Sunday.
He also revealed plans to launch a nationwide emergency care training programme aimed at standardising and improving response capacities across public hospitals.
The visit came in response to a viral video showing victims of an accident allegedly left unattended at the hospital’s emergency unit. The footage, which sparked outrage and allegations of negligence on social media, prompted the government to set up an investigative panel to probe the incident.
Dr. Salako said he received the panel’s report before arriving at the hospital. During the inspection, he engaged with frontline medical staff, assessed infrastructure, and reviewed the facility’s operational readiness to handle emergencies.
“You are in the eye of the storm, responsible for saving lives. Even if you’ve done one million things right, one mistake is what the public will remember,” Salako told the staff during the visit.
As part of immediate corrective measures, the minister ordered the hospital management to increase the number of casualty officers per shift from two to at least four, aimed at improving response time and ensuring newly recruited health assistants are fully integrated into clinical operations.
Salako also identified infrastructure gaps within the emergency unit, calling for urgent upgrades to complement recent improvements in electricity and water supply. “These improvements must be ongoing and focused on patient needs,” he stressed.
On security concerns, hospital officials told the minister that the facility is working with private security firms and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to regulate access to the emergency area.
Salako emphasised the need for enhanced surveillance systems, noting that CCTV footage has proved critical in previous investigations.

Responding to the minister’s inquiries, Head of the Emergency Unit, Dr. Timothy Sama’ila, admitted existing challenges such as limited space, high patient volumes, and staff shortages.
TV host Davina McCall has seen her outlook on life change completely since surviving a brain tumour

She’s had the toughest two years of her life, but Davina McCall says surviving a brain tumour has given her a new lease of life as she confessed: “I’m not afraid of dying anymore”.
The TV presenter had to face her fears when she went under the knife last year to remove the colloid cyst that could have put her in a coma if she’d left it untouched. And Davina says facing the ticking time bomb in her head has changed her perspective on life.
She confessed: “It was the best gift because I am not afraid of dying anymore. I have lived the life I wanted and I am not lying there going, ‘I wish I’d done that thing. I wish I’d done that job. I wish I’d not stayed in this relationship. I haven’t lived the life I want.’
“I mean, it’s a really amazing place to get to, not being scared of dying. I think having no regrets and feeling like you are living fully in the life you want to be in, it’s quite rare.”
Davina discovered the tumour in her brain during a random health check in 2023 and says she spoke to four different neurosurgeons around the world before she agreed to have it removed in November. Fearing she might not make it off the operating table, she says she “went forensic” on her children’s lives to come to terms with how they’d cope without her as well as discussing with partner Michael Douglas.
And realising Holly, 23, Tilly, 21, and 18-year-old Chester were thriving in life gave the 57-year-old the confidence to go under the knife.
“I was really worried about my kids,” explained Davina, as she opened up about facing her mortality when doctors discovered she had a colloid cyst that could have put her in a coma if she’d not had it removed. I went forensic. I’m thinking about my children and where they were at in their life, what stage they were at. You’re only as happy as your unhappiest child, right?
Davina McCall speaks out hours after having her brain operation
“And I came to a realisation after about six months of cross-examining them about their life and telling them the whole time how much I’ve loved my life, my eldest daughter caught on. She was like, ‘you are not dying’. But I realised that they would be great, they’d miss me, I want to be with them, but they would be okay. I felt like I could go to sleep on the operating table and know that they were all here to help me. But I can let go of the outcome.”
TV host Davina’s operation last year was a complete success and her recovery has been remarkable. But as she prepared to have the operation it wasn’t just her kids she was thinking about. Davina also reconnected with her step-mum and came to terms with all the ups and downs in her life including her drug addiction.
Speaking at the Happy Place Festival at the weekend, she confessed: “Part of my, ‘am I okay to let go of my life?’ has been to examine all of my past.
“And I wouldn’t change anything because without sounding arrogant, because it isn’t, I love myself. I have been on a massive life journey and I’ve been through terrible struggles. We’ve been talking a lot about a calamity vitae instead of a curriculum vitae because I think when you go for a job, ‘so what you learned at school?’
“It’s like what have you learned at the University of Life? How many calamities have you been through? Because that’s where the learning comes from. I’ve learned that if something really hard happens, it’s a good thing.
“I was like to Michael, ‘If I make it through this brain surgery. It’s going to be the best thing that’s ever happened to me.’
“The learning that I have made in the two years since I found out about it, has been so immense and enriching in my life. I wouldn’t change that for the world. But when it happened, obviously it was like another calamity coming. But do not be afraid of disasters, they will make you a better.
“How can you think your way out of it? I saw Mel Robbins the other day talking online. And I’ve heard it before, but she has this saying, ‘no one’s coming, you’ve just got yourself’.
“You can’t keep waiting for somebody else to come and rescue you. You’ve got to rescue yourself and when you do, oh, it feels so good and you feel so proud!”
She added: “It’s bloody hard. And that’s another thing that I’ve had to learn to not be resistant towards hard work on myself, to actually think, ‘great, a juicy bit of hard work on myself’.
“Because almost the harder the work, the more work you have to do, the bigger the reward because if you have to work harder, you are in a darker place. But when you see the light, the reward is so massive.
“A couple of people have said today, ‘oh, you look so well’. But it’s because I am in a happy place. If you are not in a happy place, you can begin again whenever you want or need to.”
Davina has been a mainstay of British TV since exploding onto our screens when she was 25 and she’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon working on series including The Masked Singer.
She’s fronting a new BBC dating series, Stranded on Honeymoon Island, her podcast Begin Again is going from strength to strength and her campaigning around menopause is helping women across the country.
And while she admits she’s always been “annoyingly enthusiastic”, she sees it as her duty to help younger women.
But Davina’s looking to her elders to embrace their eccentricities too.
She said: “Getting older and not caring any more is a gift. There’s got to be a gift with aging because otherwise it could feel like a loss.
“But aging is a loss of one thing, but you gain so much more in another way. I saw a girl earlier in a beautiful outfit. I said, ‘you look amazing’. She’s like, ‘no, I think it’s inappropriate. I’m 40. I shouldn’t really be wearing this’.
“And I was literally sweating my ass off, I literally don’t care! The more inappropriately someone dresses, the older they are, the more I love them. I need women 60, 70, 80, my older stateswomen, I need you to be outlandish. I need people out there shining the light for me so that life as I get older looks like it’s going to be exciting.
“And that’s what I want to do for you. I want you to look at me and go, ‘oh my God, being in my fifties is going to be great.’
“I’m at a time in my life where even if things go wrong, you don’t perceive it like that, things that go wrong are teaching you something, guiding you somewhere. And that is the gift of getting older. You just learn more and more. It’s so great!”
Davina also spoke in February about her brain operation saying she changed her Will to include heartfelt letters to her children ahead of her brain operation – because she feared she could die.

She said: There’s that saying, ‘A life lived in fear is a life half-lived’. If you don’t really want to do something, don’t do it. But if there’s something that you want to do, yeah, do it. Write your bucket list now. Write the bucket list now, in your thirties, and go, “What is my bucket list? Like, what do I want to do before I die? And let’s start doing it now.”
As royal watchers hold out hope for reconciliation between King Charles and Prince Harry, questions continue to swirl around a recent private meeting between the Palace and Team Sussex, including over a leak which could threaten the peace making process
Leaked information suggests peace could be on the horizon for the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family(Image: Wiktor Szymanowicz/Future Publishing via Getty Images)
For five long years, royal watchers have wondered whether the Windsor rift would ever be bridged. Now, leaked information and bombshell photos suggest peace could be on the horizon for the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family – but it won’t be easy.
Last week, in what is regarded as the first significant communication in many years, Prince Harry’s right-hand woman, Meredith Maines, flew to London from California to meet with King Charles’ communications chief, Tobyn Andreae. Liam Maguire, who runs the Sussexes’ UK PR team, was also in attendance.
It’s understood that the two parties conversed over “informal drinks” on the sun-drenched terrace, the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL), a private member’s club which, tellingly, has a history of promoting friendship across the globe.
In the spring of 2020, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, made the shock decision to step down as senior working royals and begin a new life in the US. In the years since, Harry, 40, has opened up on repeated occasions about the chasm between himself and his family, most notably in his 2023 memoir, Spare.
Now, it would appear that some of the frost has thawed, with the two sides having taken the first tentative steps of mending long-fractured relations.
Unfortunately, this delicate process has been rocked somewhat after details of the secret peace treaty were leaked, reportedly causing dismay in both camps. Here, the Mirror takes a look inside the meeting, which could well open up a new chapter for the warring family.

‘Informal’ talks

As reported by the Mail on Sunday, the topic of Harry returning to a more formal role within the royal fold was not discussed during the hush-hush meeting, held mere minutes away from Clarence House. However, both teams expressed a desire to avoid any media clashes or calendar conflicts going forward.
In May last year, a timetable clash between Charles’ royal garden party and Harry’s Invictus Games event meant the father and son were not able to meet during the Duke’s brief visit to the UK.
According to a source close to the situation, “There was no formal agenda. But both sides came to the table ready to talk. It’s the first real channel of communication we’ve seen in years.”
The source also told the publication that “the meeting was with Harry’s blessing”, while Buckingham Palace also reportedly supports plans to “open a channel of communication.”
After wrapping up drinks, it’s understood that Silicon Valley strategist Maines jetted back to the Sussexes’ £15 million Montecito mansion, where Harry was given a full briefing.
Family ‘pain’
There are reportedly hopes of reconciliation on both sides(Image: POOL/AFP via Getty Images)
Although it’s currently unclear who made the first move towards arranging a summit, this meeting has been viewed as a clear sign that both parties wish to move forward and build a more positive familial relationship.
Just two months ago, in a candid BBC interview, Prince Harry opened up about his heartache over not being on speaking terms with Charles, claiming his father “won’t speak to me because of this security stuff,” in reference to the Sussexes fighting against the removal of their police protection in the UK.
Emphasising that he would “love a reconciliation”, Harry went on to clarify that he had “forgiven” family members following their “disagreements”. He reflected: “There’s no point continuing to fight anymore, life is precious.”
Meanwhile, it’s believed the King holds out hope of rebuilding a bond with Harry, and getting to know his young grandchildren, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.
Shortly before Harry’s interview with the Beeb, royal sources advised The Sun that while Charles remained “frustrated” by his youngest son’s behaviour, the door had “not been locked forever”.
“The King is at heart a loving and generous man. That love has been sorely tested by this case and so many other issues over recent times. But there is now a chance for his son to move forward rather than dwell on past grievances,” the insider said.
“From his father’s perspective, the door has been shut by necessity while this painful issue played out through the proper judicial channels — but it has not been locked forever nor the key thrown away.”
Leak mystery
The Sussexes have reportedly denied giving away any information
After details of the meeting leaked, social media users speculated over who exactly spilt the bombshell information, with some speculating that an individual from the Sussex camp could have been responsible.
Others also went as far as to suggest that this could well have been a test set for Prince Harry, to see if he could be trusted to keep things private before any sort of reconciliation process could begin.
However, sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes say the couple have been frustrated by the leak and deny giving away any information. The Daily Telegraph reports that, unfortunately, the emergence of the snaps has led to yet more distrust on both sides, while a source close to Harry has said the images being made public made for a disastrous start toward what was intended to be a quiet peacemaking process.
Meanwhile, there is said to be a “weary disappointment” behind Palace doors, over both the photos and leaked talks.
William’s role
It’s believed Prince William would have been consulted before the meeting took place(Image: Getty Images)
Although Prince William’s team were notably not involved in the London summit, it’s believed that the talks would not have gone ahead without the heir to the throne being consulted beforehand. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Mail Online: “The King would never have made these moves without William’s support and understanding. William and Catherine are the future of the monarchy.
“He has undoubtedly been furious at the way the Sussexes have behaved and undoubtedly regards Harry’s behaviour as treason of a sort. They reportedly have not spoken in over two years.’
Looking ahead to any future bond between the two estranged brothers, it would appear there is still some way to go. During his recent BBC interview, Harry appeared to make reference to William, admitting that “some members of my family will never forgive me” for writing Spare, which included details of rows between the siblings.
At the time of writing, it doesn’t appear that William has any plans to meet with his younger brother, despite opportunities presenting themselves in the months to come.
Next steps
Harry and Meghan have reportedly established a more ‘royal-style household’ over in Montecito(Image: Beretta/Sims/Shutterstock)
With the first all-important step taken, royal watchers will no doubt be keeping an eye out to see what unfolds next. And there are some significant dates in the calendar coming up.
In September, Prince Harry will be travelling to the UK for the annual WellChild events, which could present an opportunity for him to meet face to face with King Charles for the first time in 18 months.
Meanwhile, just last month, The Mail on Sunday revealed that The Duke of Sussex had extended an olive branch to the Royal Family by inviting them to the 2027 Invictus Games, set to be held in Birmingham. It’s understood that senior palace aides are currently considering this proposal, which could see a public mending of bridges.
This comes at a time when sources claim Prince Harry has been touching base with old UK confidants in an attempt to orchestrate his “return from exile,” following alleged disillusionment with US-based advisors.
As the first-ever chief communications officer for the Sussexes, Maines is understood to be at the helm of this royal rehabilitation campaign, having masterminded Meghan’s Netflix project, With Love, Meghan, as well as her lifestyle brand As Ever. This is viewed as a sign that the couple are now adopting a more structured “royal-style” household, many miles away from Buckingham Palace.
At the time of writing, neither Buckingham Palace or Team Sussex have issued comments about the meeting, however, there is an air of cautious optimism amongst insiders, one of whom remarked: “Everyone wants to move forward. There’s still a long road ahead. But this was a start – and a good one.”

Amanda Holden was around 30 minutes late to her Heart FM breakfast show on Monday morning, leaving Jamie Theakston presenting solo
Amanda Holden threw Heart Radio into chaos on Monday(Image: ITV)
Amanda Holden cheekily issued a playful warning of “big fat trouble” after she turned up late for Heart FM’s breakfast show on Monday morning. The 54-year-old missed the first half-hour of the programme.
And it’s not the first time Amanda has struggled to make it to work on time either. She told co-host Jamie Theakston that she has issues “five times” in the past year.
She told Jamie that her driver “forgot to set his alarm” in order to get her from Surrey to London in time. As the star arrived for work, Jamie joked: “What kind of time do you call this?”
Amanda humorously pointed the finger elsewhere: “Oh you don’t want to blame me, blame Alan Watson who did not put his alarm on. He is my driver and my phone is on silent, obviously, always, and he was ringing me at 5.15am, saying, ‘I haven’t put the alarm on’.”
She warned: “That’s like the fifth time he’s done that now. Heads are going to roll Jamie.
(Image: Heart FM)
“How long have we been doing Heart, six years? Five years he’s been absolutely brilliant, this past year, it’s been about five times.”
Chastising her driver’s recent performance, she declared: “He has taken his eye off the ball. I’m saying it out loud and Alan, you’re in big fat trouble. I hate being late and letting people down.”
Amanda is no stranger to fashionably late entrances at Heart, recalling a September instance where she offered an apology on air to Jason King as she found herself “in a taxi” and not quite at the radio studio yet.
Standing in for Jamie due to his laryngeal cancer diagnosis, Jason humorously remarked that Amanda’s tardiness could be overlooked if she catered to the breakfast crowd. Addressing the audience, he quipped: “A big shout out first of all to Amanda Holden who is currently in her taxi, I hope there is a sausage bap in there. I really hope so.”

Amanda confessed her late arrival was down to her introducing a new furry friend to the family fold. Describing how she attempted to soothe her new puppy with melody, the plan seemingly backfired.
Amanda explained her strategy for ensuring the pup’s comfort overnight: “I got one of those little doggies with a heartbeat and a heat pad in for the puppy and she was so good, she was downstairs, literally didn’t hear a squeak out of her.”
She enthusiastically endorsed using music as a sleep aid for pets and possibly their owners: “But all over the house we put on music to help your puppy sleep. I reckon all of us slept brilliantly. I completely recommend it.”
Amanda playfully blamed the soothing tunes for her oversleeping: “I reckon I didn’t wake up because of the flipping puppy music. I’m shattered, I’ve never had such a good night’s sleep in my life.”

Reflecting on her uninterrupted slumber, Amanda surmised that while her alarm might have sounded, she likely “slept through it”. JK reacted with disbelief: “I can’t believe that you’ve had a lovely sleep and you’ve got a new puppy.”

Fiona Phillips wanted her book to inspire and encourage others with early-onset Alzheimer’s – now as it’s about to hit shelves her mission has been tainted with a tragic irony
Fiona Phillips still looks her familiar lively self in new picture released by Martin in the weeks before her book launch(Image: Pan Macmillan)
Fiona Phillips is set to help and inspire thousands of people after bravely opening up about her battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s in her new book.
But, according to her husband Martin Frizell, there’s one poignant tragedy behind the long-awaited release: She no longer remembers writing it.
The former Mirror Columnist and GMTV host was diagnosed aged 61 in early 2022 and has spent the the past year writing her memoir to help others going through the same ordeal feel less alone – and to inspire a greater understanding of what it is like and why more research is needed.
Fiona, 64, had movingly written about her fears for the future in earlier chapters of the book, admitting she sometimes feels a thought slipping away and tries “chasing it like a £5 note that has fallen out of your purse on a gusty day. ” By the penultimate chapter Martin, 66, reveals she has deteriorated significantly and cannot hold write anymore.

In fact she has no idea that she has even written the book, or that is being released on Thursday and sometimes still believes no one knows about her illness.
Martin writes in Remember When – which comes off embargo today – about the poignancy of missing a woman who is still there, but not at the same time.
“Im afraid Fiona no longer remembers that she is writing this book,” he says. “She is no longer the independent woman I fell in love with, but sometimes she is as stubborn as she has always been,” he writes. “Part of her is still the Fiona she told you about in the early chapters of this book, but much of her now is not. I miss her. I miss my wife.”

Martin is so proud of what she’s done to raise awareness since first going public with news of her diagnosis in a series of exclusive interviews for The Mirror in July 2023. Just like the spike in discussions about early-onset Alzheimer’s around the release of the book , there was another swell of public awareness at the time of her Mirror pieces. Even so Martin reveals that a lot of the time Fiona still believes people have no idea she is ill.
He says: “Fiona doesn’t seem to acknowledge that people know she is unwell. She has done so much to raise awareness of this issue and yet now forgets she has done so. In one way that seems very sad, but in another, maybe that’s just Fiona at her most fantastically independent and stubborn – still insisting she doesn’t need people knowing her business, she doesn’t need their help and definitely doesn’t want their pity.”
Fiona Phillips was a Daily Mirror columnist for more than 20 years(Image: Daily Mirror)
Both Fiona’s parents and several close family members had suffered badly with the disease. Her parents were affected in very different, but equally disturbing ways. Doctors explained it hadn’t been inherited from her parents as such, but they had passed down other genetic traits made her more ‘predisposed’, or rather more susceptible to get it. Fortunately Martin and Fiona discovered their boys, Nathaniel, 26, and Mackenzie, 23, were not at the same increased risk.
That doesn’t mean it’s been any easier for them to watch what they mum, the one-time vibrant and confident GMTV star, was going through. ‘It’s tough for them. They see their mum like this and it’s very upsetting,” says Martin. “But what choice do we have but to keep on going?’
Former Mirror columnist Fiona isn’t doing any interviews around her book and Martin is keen to let her words speak for themselves. In an early chapter, she poignantly reveals how she’s worried about forgetting the little everyday moments she shares with her sons.
Speaking of her desire to be her former self, she wrote: “I want to watch Chelsea beat Arsenal 3–0 at home. I want our son Nat to come home on leave from the Army and give me one of his bear-like hugs. I want our youngest son Mackenzie to bring me a cup of tea and a biscuit when we sit watching TV together. I want to be me.”
Sadly – as Fiona knew when penning those words – it’s only going to get harder and harder. She admitted how she had spent years trying to convince herself her low mood and brain fog was caused by something else – first, long covid and then the menopause. It was actually a menopause specialist who was ultimately the one to suggest they consult a neurologist.
