‘It’s A Joke’: Chelsea Boss Maresca Slams Weather Chaos At Club World Cup

Enzo Maresca, the manager of Chelsea, criticised the two-hour delay in his team’s Saturday Club World Cup victory over Benfica, suggesting that the event should be played elsewhere in the future.

After a two-hour delay following a storm warning, Chelsea made it to the quarter-finals by defeating Benfica 4-1 in extra-time.

Due to widely accepted regulations in the United States that require the suspension of outdoor sporting events if there is a chance of lightning, the tournament was the sixth time a game has been postponed.

Maresca added that a review of the number of games that had been disrupted should be made afterward.

The Chelsea manager responded, “For me personally, it’s not football.” “They have already suspended six games here,” they say. It’s a joke, in my opinion. It’s not football, really.

It’s truly amazing, and it’s completely unfamiliar to me.

You must suspend the game, I understand that for security reasons. However, if you suspend seven or eight games, it’s likely that this is not the best place to hold this competition.

With four minutes left, Reece James’ second-half free kick gave Chelsea the lead.

The players were forced to leave the field by the storm warning, which nearly halted play.

According to Maresca, it was one of the best performances of the past few weeks.

“The game was very good for 85 minutes before we stopped for two hours, and when we first started it was a completely different game. Because you “break the tempo,” the game is no longer the same.

Maresca made sure to support the Club World Cup, which was expanded to 32 teams for the first time this year, and is being held in the United States as a formal rehearsal for the 2026 World Cup in North America.

It’s a fantastic competition, they say. All the best clubs are participating in the Club World Cup, he said.

“But six, seven games have been suspended?” It is not typical. How many World Cup players have been suspended? Probably none. How many games are there in a European (Championship)? Zero . There are some issues.

Dorking’s White given six-game ban for sexist comment

Marc White, the owner and manager of Dorking Wanderers, was given a six-game touchline ban for a statement he made on a women’s podcast.

In his 1,000th game as club manager, White was punished for remarks he made before his side lost 3-1 to Weston-super-Mare last year.

Before the National League South game, he said, “You have to pay a little more respect to the women refs, so you know what I mean? ” In a conversation with the Under the Cosh podcast before the game.

You must show some more respect, such as helping them park.

White was charged by the Football Association in May with using offensive or verbal language in the interview, calling it an “aggravated breach” of the rules because it made reference to gender.

The club announced that White will now be barred from using the touchline for Dorking’s National League South’s first six games.

First team manager Marc White has received a six-game touchline suspension starting the league season as a result of (intended fun) comments made on a podcast about women drivers. The club posted a message on their X account.

Since the club’s formation in 1999, White has become one of the most recognizable faces in non-league football and has been a vocal and frequently controversial player.

He claimed he had been banned from 12 stadiums during an Under the Cosh interview.

‘We’d never talked, we only met on Friday, but we’re a Grand Slam doubles team’

Images courtesy of Getty

Emma Navarro and Jannik Sinner have a lot in common. Both tennis players in their early 20s have had excellent success, but they both want more, and they have almost all of their tennis energy concentrated on singles.

They will play doubles together at the US Open in August. They made their first official appearance on Friday.

When asked about the partnership, Italian world number one Sinner responded, “It was very unexpected to be honest.” She was the first person I met on Friday. We had never texted or spoken to one another.

The United States Tennis Association made the decision to hold the US Open mixed doubles this year as a standalone event on August 19 through August 20 before the hard-court Grand Slam will begin on August 24. The association said it hoped it would draw more well-known singles players.

One of the intriguing pairings that has been created for the tournament, which features Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz and British number one Emma Raducanu.

The general rule of doubles is that the better you know someone, the better you play together.

Sinner and Navarro can, however, take confidence from the instances of unexpected pairings coming off the top.

Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen, for instance, both won the 2016 Wimbledon mixed doubles title despite never having played together prior to the match and having several fights in the final.

Sinner explained at Wimbledon, where the first round matchup will take place on Tuesday against fellow Italian Luca Nardi, that the tournament kind of wanted us to play together because some teams had already been set up.

“I’m very happy to play with Emma, even though the choice wasn’t very big.” I already warned her against letting her down for my poor volleys.

Sinner has never competed in doubles before, winning the past two Australian Open titles and the US Open the previous year. He has also won the previous three Grand Slam singles titles.

Navarro, a quarter-finalist of the Australian Open and Wimbledon, has made numerous Grand Slam doubles appearances, but he also made it to the US Open semi-finals last year.

But she has never won a doubles match at the US Open.

In men’s doubles, Sinner ranks fifth overall in the world, while Navarro is ranked fifth overall by the WTA.

The US Open mixed doubles entry list also includes entries from numerous famous people, including Naomi Osaka, Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, Nick Kyrgios, and Iga Swiatek. Zheng Qinwen, the sixth-ranked Chinese player, and Jack Draper will both be in the film.

According to Sinner, splitting the coaching team won’t have an impact on Wimbledon chances.

On the eve of Wimbledon, Sinner is confident that his tournament chances won’t suffer as a result of splitting up with two key team members.

The 23-year-old’s trainer Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio, who have been working with him since September 2024, made the decision to keep their Australian Open titles in January and advance to the French Open final in June.

I recently parted ways, but it hasn’t had an impact on me, according to Sinner. I’m prepared to compete, I said. I experience freedom.

We’ve had incredible results with them in the past, which is obviously a huge thank you. But I made the decision to make a different choice.

Club World Cup: Flamengo Offer A Champions League Level Test For Bayern  — Kompany

Even though Flamengo and Bayern Munich are a fixture in Sunday’s Club World Cup round-of-16 match, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany says the match should be comparable to a Champions League game.

At Hard Rock Stadium, six-time champions of Europe take on three-time Copa Libertadores champion Flamengo, who are up for a place in the quarter-finals.

FIFA undoubtedly considered the idea for the tournament when it came up with the idea, but Bayern boss knows what to do with this fixture.

In his first season in charge of the Bundesliga giants, the former Manchester City defender described Flamengo as a top team that had a strong combination of tactical discipline, aggressiveness, and a very real dose of Brazilian creativity and flair.

Flamengo has the discipline to defend as a unit like the majority of the top-level Champions League teams. That’s why I think this game resembles a top-flight game in Europe, he said.

Flamengo is essential for any top-level team because of its clear structure and discipline. They can create dangerous situations on the ball and defend well as a unit, he continued.

After facing a weak team in their final group stage match against Benfica, Bayern enter the game with a 1-0 defeat. However, victories over Boca Juniors and Auckland City had already guaranteed the Germans a spot in the knockout stages.

Despite the fact that Brazilian teams have shown themselves capable of defeating European clubs at this tournament, Kompany still observes some of the country’s traditional flair in the tactical discipline.

Brazilian football is associated with creativity, he said, adding that there are some things we don’t even consider when we play on the field.

Filipe Luis, a 39-year-old Flamengo’s coach, has clearly studied his opponent closely, just like Kompany did Kompany.

I haven’t played with him because I’m not familiar with him personally, but I do know about his career and his strong character. I studied his team a lot, and even Burnley had some intriguing ideas last year, Luis said.

I watched a lot of Bayern’s games this year, especially early in the season. He has some very intriguing ideas. I try to copy and pick from the best, as I have previously stated. Many of us referenced Bayern this year. So I was able to watch a lot of his early in the season.

One of the toughest opponents we could face is undoubtedly a team that has really absorbed his model well. Every coach and player wants to participate in these types of matches. It’s therefore a great privilege,” he said.

Jamal Musiala, who ended the season with an injury and missed the Benfica game due to a knock against Boca, might be given a second chance by Kompany.

He is now back to training. For us, for instance, it would be preferable to not have him at all. However, the coach said, “We will have to wait and decide tomorrow.”

He is already in the squad, so he will be there tomorrow. We’ll see, though, what happens next. ”

Carsley: Overlooked for the senior team, heralded with the U21s

Reuters

Lee Carsley’s reputation suffered a blow eight months ago when his team’s disastrous defeat by Greece hampered his chances of becoming the senior men’s coach.

After German Thomas Tuchel was appointed, he returned to his job with the under-21s, concentrating on the European Championship this summer.

After guiding the Young Lions to their second consecutive European Championship Under-21 title, Carsley is now receiving praise once more.

He “tried and came up with the solution.”

England coach Lee Carsley speaks to his players during the 2025 Under-21 European Championship finalReuters

In their final game defeat against Greece, England’s senior team won five of Carsley’s six games. However, some daring deeds did not materialize.

He chose his team’s tactics and tactics, which led to “an unseemly mess” and a humiliating defeat at Wembley.

Carsley said he had a lot to learn from the experience prior to Sunday’s U21 Euros final, which he had to watch in Slovakia, where England started by defeating the Czech Republic, before drawing with Slovenia, and losing to Germany.

Former England defender Stephen Warnock described them as “poor in the group stage, they struggled, and then found their feet” on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Lee Carsley improvised and came up with the idea. He and his staff were the ones who spearheaded this, and they were able to put the team together at the right moment.

England faced Germany once more in the final, where they were superb in the first half, leading 2-0. Spain and the Netherlands were defeated.

Germany fought back and almost won it at the death, but Carsley’s team regrouped to score in extra time as he countered by becoming too defensive.

He asserted that there is definitely a little feeling during the game. You sense that you are out of your depth, or that the players are perhaps allowing too much territory or going too deep.

England defend title in a “tastefully different” manner.

England won the game, and Carsley’s man-management abilities and tactical acumen helped them succeed. He even made a positive impression while playing for the senior squad.

Another incredible accomplishment, said Manchester City forward Jack Grealish on Instagram. What kind of manager is this guy? deserves it.

Charlie Cresswell and Harvey Elliott, two of Carsley’s current squad members, were the only ones who survived their 2023 triumph, but he moulded them into European champions, emulating the England Under-21s’ back-to-back victories in 1982 and 1984.

Former England Under-21 captain Nigel Reo-Coker remarked on BBC Radio 5 Live that Lee Carsley is “fearless.”

He backed the team he assembled, hoping to give the players with less experience a chance to succeed. And they resisted the challenge.

With six substitutions in place for Alex Scott due to injury and Sunday’s final coming in extra time, Carsley had to rely on his team.

Tyler Morton and Jonathan Rowe combined for the winning goal in the tournament while defender CJ Egan-Riley was used for the first time.

The lazy thing as coaches would be to try to replicate what we did the first time, but this time it was a completely different, Carsley said.

We had a “outside the box” approach to our training, tactics, and how we wanted to play our squad.

Senior call-ups are “excellent to go for.”

England manager Tuchel must have been impressed as he considered his options for the 2026 World Cup as he watched on from the Bratislava stadium.

How many of Carsley’s 2023 squad’s members will make their debut against his new European champions? Ten have already made their senior team appearances.

The Football Association’s CEO, Mark Bullingham, said, “I’m sure Lee will be humble about what he and the group have accomplished, but he deserves praise for this extraordinary accomplishment.”

We hadn’t won this trophy in 39 years before Lee took over [in 2021]. He has won it twice in two tournaments.

He has also overseen player development, with many U21s making their senior team debuts, in addition to this exceptional tournament success.

I don’t think I should move too quickly.

Carsley will continue to lead the Young Lions into the upcoming tournament after agreeing a new contract until the 2027 U21 Euros.

His Slovakian team had yet to win the trophy, and he was already considering a European hat-trick.

“I suppose the challenge is to do it once more in two years,” Carsley said.

Funnily enough, I received the new squad of players that might be able to play in the upcoming campaign on Saturday, so I’m not thinking about moving too quickly.

When asked if he would represent Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup alongside Tuchel, Carsley replied, “I’m not sure. I’m very proud of what I do, and I enjoy working with the players.

Returning to his primary role was a wise choice, according to analysis.

Phil McNulty, the chief football writer:

The Football Association holds him in such high regard because of his second successive victory at the European Championship with England U21s.

His tenure as interim manager of the senior team, which included Sir Gareth Southgate’s departure and Tuchel’s appointment, was generally successful, with five victories out of six games.

“Carsley’s ultra-attacking selection backfired spectacularly and, at times, he looked uncomfortable in the unforgiving spotlight that shines on England’s manager, and that was the low point,” he said of the 2-1 home defeat to Greece. At Wembley, the selection and outcome raised doubts about his qualifications for the position of the highest priority.

He resisted doing what he had always done best: coaching and shaping the younger generations into the cohesive, prosperous unit they have become.

“Players praise Carsley’s coaching and methods, and his most recent success only strengthens his reputation.

After Tuchel’s indifferent debut as England coach, Carsley’s brief tenure has started to reflect more positively on the history of the country. However, leading the U21s still seems much more comfortable than the senior side, and it was the right decision to step up.

The FA may find it more difficult to handle the FA’s final victory over Germany.

Clubs looking for a progressive manager will undoubtedly find Carsley’s work interesting, but the FA will be at ease with it because he signed a new contract with the FA in 2027 and has consistently stated that he is happy where he is.
