Mamdani, Cuomo clash in final NYC mayoral debate: Key takeaways

In a last push to win over voters before the November 4 election, frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, former governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa squared off on Wednesday in the final debate of the mayoral race in New York City.

However, their attacks on one another and their defenses were mostly along predictable lines, as their precedents, including that of Israel’s and President Donald Trump’s war against Gaza, predominated in their clash at LaGuardia Community College in Queens.

After claiming a surprise victory in the June primary on a platform of affordability, Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, maintains a sizable lead in the polls, partially offset by higher taxes that favor the wealthy.

Cuomo has repeatedly criticised Mamdani’s promises, most of which would require the approval of state lawmakers, and has repeatedly criticized the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist for having no prior experience in government. Since Eric Adams, the current mayor, left, only Mamdani, Cuomo, and Sliva remain in the race, which has narrowed.

What were the key lessons learned from the discussion?

Future versus experience

Cuomo and Mamdani drew attention to the themes that had shaped the race’s final stretch as the night rolled around.

Cuomo referred to himself as the “can get it done, not just talk about it.”

He has never managed or run anything. He compared Mamdani to saying that he has never had a real job.

Mamdani described himself as the “sole candidate running with a vision for the city’s future.”

He is a “desperate man” who has been criticizing Cuomo because he is aware that his one true love, power, is now slipping away.

Sliwa later addressed both of his rivals in a critical tone, saying, “Zohran, your resume could fit on a cocktail napkin, and Andrew, your failures could fill a New York City public school library.”

Trump’s opposition

The New York City mayoral race has had a significant impact on the US president. Immigration agents descended on Manhattan’s Chinatown on Tuesday, escalating federal enforcement efforts in the nation’s largest city, and the debate broke out hours later.

If Mamdani is elected, Trump has pledged to use the National Guard and reduce federal funding for the city. Trump and Cuomo have a lot of the same donors, but they both have a reputation for making threats that hurt the city from a win.

Trump has said that he will take over New York if Mamdani wins because he doesn’t value him. Trump [thinks he’s a kid, and he’s going to knock Mamma on his tuchus,” Cuomo said.

Trump’s dream is for him to win over Mamdani because he will use him politically throughout our nation and take over New York City, he said. Make no mistake, both the mayor and the president will be in charge.

Cuomo was Mamdani’s version of Donald Trump.

Donald Trump said, “He wants Andrew Cuomo to be mayor, not because it will be good for New Yorkers, but because it will be good for him,” and that “any day of the week you can hear him tell you that.”

Palestine’s support once more is significant.

Mamdani was once more questioned about his unwavering support for Palestinian rights, which Cuomo repeatedly and blatantly denounced as anti-Semitic.

Mamdani claimed that he would be the mayor of New York City who celebrates and values Jewish people more than just protecting them. He claimed that Cuomo was “scoreing political points” by making false anti-Semitism claims.

Cuomo claimed that he was “ignoring the hatred against Jews.”

Sliwa falsely accused Mamdani of supporting “global jihad.”

I responded, “It is not something I have said, and it continues to be attributed to me,” and “quite frankly, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I am the first Muslim candidate to be on the verge of winning this election.”

Mamdani announces the selection of a police commissioner

In addition, the leading candidate made a statement during the debate, saying he would ask Jessica Tisch, the current police commissioner, to keep her post if elected.

Some of Mamdani’s supporters may find that to be unfavorable because they believe the police chief, who is currently Mayor Adams, is out of step with the promised police reforms.

Tisch, whose wealthy family is worth billions, has advocated for more “quality of life” enforcement, which according to critics disproportionately harms minority communities. She has also pushed for stricter enforcement of some criminal laws.

Cuomo was questioned about sexual assault.

Cuomo’s opponents repeatedly questioned him about allegations of sexual misconduct from his staff, which led him to resign as governor of New York in early 2021.

Later, state attorney general investigation revealed that Cuomo had “sexually harassed a number of New York State employees, both current and former.”

Cuomo claims that the cases have been settled “legally,” but litigation persists in some cases.

Mamdani made the revelation that Charlotte Bennett, who Cuomo is currently suing for defamation, was one of the accusers during the discussion.

What do you tell the 13 women who you sexually harmed? Cuomo asked him.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,337

On Thursday, October 23, 2025, how things are going:

  • Six people were killed by Russian-prolonged assaults on Ukrainian territory on Wednesday, including two children, and nationwide power outages were forced, according to Ukrainian officials.
  • According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 405 drones and 28 missiles at Ukraine overnight in an attack on its energy infrastructure. According to the air force, Ukraine detonated 16 Russian missiles and 333 drones, while other missiles detonated directly and defeated directly at targets.
  • Svitlana Hrynchuk, the minister of energy of Ukraine, claimed that Russia is conducting a systematic attack to systematically devastate Ukraine’s energy system and is targeting repair teams at energy facilities with secondary attacks.
  • Four people were hurt in the second night of Russian drone attacks in Kyiv, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the city’s military commander, early on Thursday. A kindergarten was among the damage done by drones, according to Takachenko.
  • Overnight attacks were carried out by the Ukrainian military against an oil refinery in Dagestan and a weapons and ammunition factory in Mordovia, Russia.
  • Following recent sharp increases in Ukrainian drone attacks that have been sweeping across the nation in recent months, Russian Vice Admiral Vladimir Tsimlyansky declared that Russia’s army would use reservists to defend civilian infrastructure, including oil refineries.
  • According to reports, Russian President Vladimir Putin conducted a test of Russia’s nuclear forces on land, sea, and air to review their level of readiness and organizational structure. A nuclear submarine launched a ballistic missile from a land-based Yars intercontinental missile, a Sineva ballistic missile launched from a strategic bomber, and nuclear-capable cruise missiles were also used during the test.

Sanctions

  • As his anger with President Putin grows over the failure to implement a ceasefire, the president of the United States has for the first time in his second term put sanctions on Russia for Ukraine.
  • The US Department of Treasury called on Moscow to accept a ceasefire immediately and declared it would investigate further action.
  • US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated in a statement that the government is sanctioning Russia’s two largest oil companies, which fund the Kremlin’s war machine, because President Putin has refused to put an end to this pointless conflict. We ask our allies to support us and follow these restrictions.
  • Trump added that he anticipated reaching a trade agreement with Xi Jinping, and that he would raise concerns about China’s plans to buy Russian oil at their meeting in South Korea the following week.
  • Additionally, Russia’s 19th package of sanctions, which includes a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, was approved by the European Union.
  • Short-term contracts expire after six months, and long-term contracts expire on January 1, 2027, respectively.
  • Due to the undermining German state control of two German subsidiaries of the sanctioned Russian oil giant Rosneft, Britain has issued a special license allowing businesses to collaborate with them. Russia’s two biggest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, were accused of helping to fund the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine by Britain last week.
  • Ukraine is urging European nations to refrain from using a proposed $163 billion loan based on frozen Russian state assets, arguing that it needs to be able to purchase non-European weapons, repair Russian-attack damage, and pay compensation for victims. To boost their defense industries, some EU states have suggested that the funds should be used primarily for European-made weapons.
  • Russian Deputy Finance Minister Alexey Moiseev stated that while it has no intention of seizing any European assets, including banks and companies, Russia will consider its position if the EU seizes frozen Russian sovereign assets.

talks on a ceasefire

  • Due to the timing of the meeting and the lack of progress in diplomatic efforts to end Ukraine’s hostility, President Trump claimed.
  • Trump told reporters at the White House, “We called off our meeting with President Putin because it just didn’t feel right.” It didn’t seem like we were going to arrive where we needed to be. Trump responded, “I cancelled it, but we’ll do it in the future.”
  • Trump also expressed frustration with the stalled negotiations, saying, “Every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don’t go anywhere. They simply don’t move anywhere.
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine, described Trump’s suggestion that Russia and Ukraine should “freeze the war at its current front lines” as “a good compromise,” but he doubted that Putin would back it.

financial and military assistance

  • Trump refuted a news report that claimed the US had approved for Ukraine to launch long-range missiles into Russia, adding that the US “has nothing to do with those missiles.”
  • After meeting with President Zelenskyy, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that Sweden has signed a letter of intent that could allow it to send 150 of its domestically produced Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.
  • Next year, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine plans to start using Swedish Gripen jets. Gripens are a top priority for our army, they say. He claimed that it is all about the money and maneuvers.
  • According to the Norwegian government, Norway will give Ukraine another 1.5 billion Norwegian crowns ($149.4 million) for the purchase of natural gas to provide electricity and heating.

Celebrity Traitors star Celia Imrie makes cheeky confession about rival contestant

Celia Imrie, who was in Thursday Murder Club, had a suspicion that Jonathan Ross might be a bad guy in the BBC series Celebrity Traitors, in which Welsh singer Charlotte Church was “murdered” yesterday.

Veteran actress Celia Imrie told Jonathan Ross she has “a bit of a crush” on him during last night’s Celebrity Traitors.

The performer, who participated in Thursday Murder Club this year, admitted that Ross, 64, might be a traitor. Following the roundtable discussion on Wednesday’s drama-packed episode, Imrie, 73, voted to fire him.

Imrie, who has worked in numerous well-known dramas and films for the past five decades, said, “This is a little tricky because I have a bit of a crush on you right now, but I put you Jonathan because I believe you have the chutzpah and brilliance to be a traitor.”

Presenter Claudia Winkleman declared the banishment would be left to chance after two rounds of voting ended with Scottish actor Mark Bonnar and historian David Olusoga receiving equal numbers of votes.

Following a roundtable discussion where contestants debate the identities of the secret traitors who meet at night to plot their next “murder,” the episode ended before the banishment’s conclusion, in an effort to extort the charity prize pot from the faithfuls.

In a number of scenes with Imrie, including one where she audibly passed wind while on a stressful job in a cabin, which caused the audience’s fellow cast members to chuckle all over the place.

Another Imrie clip, which featured her improvising to the sound of a banshee for a challenge, was made into a meme.

Until Imrie’s confession, none of the Traitors – Ross, Alan Carr, and Cat Burns – had really even been suspected – but is their time running out and are the Faithfuls finally onto them?

Earlier in the episode, Welsh singer Charlotte Church became the latest contestant to be “murdered” by the traitors – comedian Alan Carr, TV presenter Jonathan Ross and singer Cat Burns – who had plotted their next move during last Thursday’s episode.

Walsh makes Chelsea history on night of records for youthful Blues

Reggie Walsh, the record-breaking midfielder, is regarded as unique by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

The Italian took this youngster out of Chelsea’s academy and his GCSE year to make him the club’s third-youngster ever player after having a successful career in the position himself.

Walsh turned 17 on Monday and added Romeo Lavia to his Ajax debut in the 65th minute, making him the second youngest Englishman to play in the Champions League, behind only Jack Wilshere, who was formerly a midfielder for Arsenal.

Of course, this was a result of a dominant 5-1 win at home to a struggling Ajax side, but Walsh also broke the 11-year record held by Dominic Solanke, who is currently at Spurs, to become Chelsea’s youngest player in the top tier competition.

Maresca explained in a speech in September why he enjoys Walsh so much: “I like Reggie more than the others. I like all the academy guys.

Reggie is successful because he consistently performs tasks that I have assigned to the other players without asking me to. I don’t need to ask him to do anything. I already want that player’s actions from him.

Walsh, who is he?

Walsh, who had already broken numerous other records, was making his fourth appearance for Chelsea.

Walsh’s family didn’t anticipate him making his debut in Sweden until the end of last season, which was such a surprise given that he was called up to Chelsea’s first team.

They were fortunate to see him debut a week later, with the Blues taking a dominant 4-1 lead away from home to earn a 10-0 lead in the second leg.

Walsh, a skilled playmaker with a strong engine and great vision, only recently signed his first professional contract.

Jamie Redknapp, a former Spurs and Liverpool midfielder, is a friend of his and is an England Under-18s international.

Given that he only made two Under-21 appearances for the Under-18s when making his debut last year, it was surprising when Maresca removed him from the team.

Maresca previously stated that “he makes everything look so] easy,” adding that he was “perfect “for” his system,” and he demonstrated this against 10-man Ajax.

On Wednesday, Walsh completed 18 of his 19 passes in the final third of Ajax, with 16 of those coming in. Additionally, he twice seized possession thanks to two interceptions.

The larger picture

Walsh focuses both on Chelsea’s future plans and the recent past’s ghosts.

Since there hasn’t been a player over the age of 28 since the start of the season, Chelsea gave minutes to 10 players under the age of 21 or younger against Ajax.

On Wednesday, Chelsea also broken a number of other records, including:

Estevao, a Brazilian international, has joined the Blues this summer, and he is still impressive.

The forward was one of three Chelsea players last week who was chosen to receive the Golden Boy award, which recognizes the best young players from all over Europe, along with Jorrel Hato and Mamadou Sarr.

Maresca was praised for his performance after Hato described him as one of the best football players since Lamine Yamal.

He remarked, “I feel very fortunate to work for him.” Fans purchase tickets to see players like Cole (Palmer) and Estevao.

He is “very modest and polite,” and he wants to work hard. He has a wonderful family that is close to him. Although he is a special player, we shouldn’t be concerned that he believes he is aware of his level of talent. He is a straightforward individual.

For the club and its young players, it’s a special night.

The Blues were the youngest Premier League team and one of the youngest teams in Europe’s top five leagues last season, finishing second only to sister club Strasbourg, which was also under the same BlueCo American ownership.

After winning the Conference League and Club World Cup last year, Chelsea’s strategy, which occasionally receives criticism, is designed by them and is believed to have led to greater success over the long term.

Despite that, signing so many promising young players can send the wrong message to the club’s renowned academy, so a delicate balance must be struck.

Rio Ngumoha was traded to Liverpool in 2024, but Chelsea vowed it would never happen again.

Maresca has since made its debut last season, against less-than-proven Conference League competition, making eight academy players in the past eight years.

Additionally, 19-year-olds George and Josh Acheampong, both 19, have been given full-time first-team roles.

Mum thought Taylor Swift’s £75,000 donation to daughter’s cancer appeal was a prank

Two-year-old Lilah Smoot had a seizure at home, and an MRI revealed a tumour on her brain, which, despite being removed, was a very uncommon cancer.

A mum thought Taylor Swift’s $100,000 (£75,000) donation to her daughter’s GoFundMe amid her gruelling cancer journey was a joke.

Katelynn Smoot’s life was shattered when her then 18-month-old daughter Lilah was diagnosed with ATRT — atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumour — a very rare and aggressive tumour. She shared her family’s journey on Instagram and TikTok, and a video of her toddler dancing to Swift’s tune Fortnight.

Swift, a 35-year-old woman, immediately donated the sizable sum to the fundraiser, increasing its value by a third. The treatment Lilah needs now fits her budget. Knowing that Swift saw our video makes me enthralled, said mother-of-two Katelynn.

The donation is incredible, but it means a lot that she took the time to watch, care, and communicate that message. The Swifties ran after her donation, which led to her death. She’s almost doubled her donation right now. Thank you is something I feel inadequate for.

As ATRT is so rare, there is only one known treatment pathway — and it involves two rounds of induction chemotherapy, three rounds of high-dose chemo with stem cell rescue, and six weeks of proton radiation. The family’s closest children’s hospitals do not offer all of the treatment plan, such as the proton radiation.

There is a 100% chance that Lilah will pass away if you don’t treat her cancer. There aren’t many treatment options because it’s so uncommon; “Katelynn, from North Carolina, continued. There is really only one protocol that has been used for the past 25 years.”

The brave youngster has overcome all of her difficulties, and her mother earlier this month captured her on camera dancing to Fortnight. Lilah, now two, looked at the screen and said, “That’s my friend,” mid-dance. The adorable clip was shared on Katelynn’s social media account.

Katelynn continued, “I didn’t even realize what she said at first… That’s your friend, I asked, “What’s your name?” and she responded, “Yes.” And to be honest, they really have a… People really believe Taylor is going to see this, I joked to my husband. You never know, he said to me. But I had no real hopes that she would.

Without prior authorization, content cannot be displayed.

Swift, who has 14 Grammys, was able to see the video. Tyler, Katelynn’s husband, called his wife to let her know about her donation after seeing it. Katelynn was certain he was ending her, but a GoFundMe message less than an hour later left her confused.

The mum told People: “At first, I thought he was joking. For about 30 minutes, we questioned if it was real. But then we saw it come through on the back end of GoFundMe, along with a message that said, ‘Sending you the biggest hug to my friend Lilah.’ That’s when I knew Taylor really saw the video — and she meant it.”

Lilah saw the artist on the iPad and once more said, “That is my friend,” as they filmed a thank-you message. The singer’s family has not spoken to him, but they did express gratitude last night.

She said, “She’s a very busy woman, and what she did was more than enough.” I’m just hoping she realizes our gratitude. She reportedly extended the biggest hug to us, Katelynn said.

It’s just that she has a happy life, no matter how short or long it may be, she says to be completely accurate about her hopes and dreams (Lilah). I just want her life to be joyful, full of experiences, and memories.

Kane can’t stop scoring – is the Ballon d’Or within reach?

Images courtesy of Getty

Harry Kane’s trophy drought came to an end with Munich, Bayern’s triumphant title in his 15th year of playing professionally.

It made it easier for him to pursue other significant prizes, including those for his club, his hometown, and himself.

The England striker was only 13th in the 2025 Ballon d’Ors in September despite having the best form of his life and never placed above 10th on the prestigious list.

Ousmane Dembele, who was named the world’s best player in Paris in the month that followed, seems to have taken Kane’s game to a whole new, previously impossible level.

With a 4-0 Champions League victory over Club Brugge, the 32-year-old increased his goal total this season to 20 in 12 club games across all competitions.

Kane is aware that if he keeps up his winning streak, wins the biggest club competition in Europe, and helps England win the World Cup in the summer, he will be in the running for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

The former Tottenham Hotspur hero earlier this month said, “I would love to win it for sure, it would be an accumulation of doing something great individually and as a team.” “It would be almost the ideal season,” he said.

Michael Owen, the last English player to play for Liverpool in 2001, was the last to capture the prize. There have been only three others – Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966) and Kevin Keegan (1978, 1979).

Numbers are self-evident.

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

This could be his best chance ever given how he has just started his third Bundesliga campaign.

In just 104 games, Kane scored 105 goals in 108 games, making him the fastest player this century to do so for a team playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Since the start of 2023-24, no other player has scored that many goals in Europe’s top five leagues.

England’s record scorer is averaging a goal every 54 minutes, but neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo, who needed 17 and 13 goals in a season, managed to score 20.

He is on pace to score 58 goals with 12 goals already scored in his previous seven Bundesliga games.

To surpass Robert Lewandowski’s record-breaking 41 goals in a single Bundesliga season, Kane needs another 30 in the final 27 games.

In Europe, the story is similar. He has scored more goals (24 goals and six assists) than any other player in the competition since his first Champions League appearance for Bayern in September 2023.

Kane has “redesigned the center-forward game.”

Kane’s Ballon d’Or case, however, goes beyond just goals; other elite goalscorers can’t match his hard work when he drops off the ball and off the ball.

In his 1990 Ballon d’Or winner’s column for Sky Germany, Lothar Matthaus wrote, “Kane has reinvented the center-forward game, as Manuel Neuer did with goalkeepers about a decade and a half ago.

“I don’t see a better striker anywhere right now,” he said. Not just because of his goals, but also because of the positions and versatility he plays.

Kane also exhibits qualities as a passer, dribbler, and tackler. He also contributes to the goalscoring, playmaking, box-to-box, and tackle corpse.

Kane’s team-mates do not overlook his ability to play with others while also upholding his incredible scoring record.

His former Bayern team-mate Kingsley Coman said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast earlier this year, “Harry makes you better – he is not here just to finish, he will put you in front of the goal.”

He seems to enjoy scoring as much as finding a really nice pass. Amazing is that he can do both. One of the strikers is the one who enjoys the simplest play.

People claim that a problem arises when a striker is selfish. However, Harry consistently scores 40 or more goals per year.

After Jamal Musiala’s leg and ankle broke during the summer, which gave Bayern their main attacking force, manager Vincent Kompany changed Kane’s play to give him almost total attacking freedom on the pitch.

Raphael Honigstein, a member of the BBC Football Daily Euro Leagues podcast, said, “He’s playing like three or four different players on the pitch at once. That’s invaluable.”

What data are gathered from this quiz?

Haaland and Mbappe maintaining pace

Kane, however, is not the only current striker in the field who wants to be called the world’s best player.

Kylian Mbappe has 18 goals in 14 games for Real Madrid and France while Erling Haaland has 24 in 14 games this season for Manchester City and Norway.

Kane has 23 goals in 15 games, including his most recent for England.

Matthaus feels neither contribute to the pitch as Kane, despite Haaland scoring in 12 consecutive matches and Mbappe ending his most recent run at 11th.

After Kane’s all-action display against [Borussia] Dortmund], he wrote, “I’ve never seen Haaland and Mbappe slide in their own penalty area like Kane did in the 88th minute.”

“I also don’t see Mbappe and Haaland making passes lasting 50 meters or more. Kane can’t play any of the other two’s chip shots, “I haven’t seen them.”

However, when Messi and Ronaldo aren’t awarded the Ballon d’Or, a winner typically comes from a team that has enjoyed success in the Champions League, Euros, or World Cup.

Kane remarked, “The best player on that team wins,” calling it a “team trophy.”

There is a chance to do that if I continue to do what I’m doing and our club and country have a successful season.
