British Equestrian Jon Stroud

At the 2025 Jumping European Championships in Spain, Scott Brash of Great Britain won individual silver.

With a score of 1.088, The Scotsman won Britain’s first individual show jumping medal on Hello Folie, taking home the country’s first medal since 2019.

On United Touch S, Germany’s Richard Vogel, a world-ranked ninth-ranked individual, won gold, and Gilles Thomas, a Belgian, came in third on Ermitage Kalone.

After taking silver in the team competition on Friday, Brash and Hello Folie won the other medal in A Coruna.

Following nearly flawless first-round efforts, Vogel and Brash placed first and second, respectively, in round two, and stayed there until the tense conclusion.

She has shown the world this week how talented she is, according to Brash. She has taken the biggest courses so far, she said. She’s grown up throughout the week, and I think she’ll use this championship to develop further.

Wigan returned to the top of Women’s Super League with an 80-0 demolition of bottom side Warrington.

The Warriors ran in 14 tries with Tiana Power claiming four of them.

Elsewhere, third-placed York Valkyrie thrashed Barrow Raiders 58-0 for a fifth straight win to stay within two points of St Helens who dropped from the summit to second.

And Leeds are three points further back in fourth after a 54-12 win over fifth-placed Huddersfield.

Sisters Tiana and Shaniah Power both crossed inside five minutes for unbeaten Wigan before a Cerys Jones double and scores from Georgia Wilson, Mia Atherton and Tiana’s second put the leaders out of sight by half-time.

Tiana Power and Jones completed hat-tricks after Megan Williams crossed to take the Warriors past 50 points before Australian centre Power added her fourth. Tries from Eva Hunter, Remi Wilton, and Kaitlin Hilton capped the rout.

Isabel Rowe added 12 goals from 14 attempts as Wigan made it 156 points without reply from their past two matches.

York, WSL champions in the last two seasons, were made to work hard by second-bottom Barrow in the first half, building a 16-0 half-time lead thanks to Savannah Andrade, Lisa Parker and Emma Kershaw scores.

But the floodgates opened after the break as Peace Lekuru scored her first WSL tries with a hat-trick. Zoe Hornby, Emma Kershaw, Tara Moxon, Evie Sexton, Eboni Partington and Andrade also crossed as the Raiders shipped nine second-half tries.

Tilly Davies gave Huddersfield an early lead away to Leeds, but the hosts blasted back with five unanswered tries before half-time from Izzy Northrop (2), Ella Donnelly, Melanie Howard and Ebony Stead.

The second half followed the same pattern with the Rhinos again outscoring their West Yorkshire rivals by five tries to one.

Richard Osman shares unexpected beginnings of marriage to Ingrid Oliver

Pointless star Richard Osman and actress wife Ingrid Oliver have been married since 2022 – but the beginning of their romance began a couple of years later amid social media interactions and messages via friends

Richard Osman has opened up about the innocent beginnings of his romance with actress Ingrid Oliver which began with online interactions and led to marriage. The 54-year-old Thursday Murder Club author and the 48-year-old Doctor Who actress have been husband and wife since 2022.

Richard, who is also a TV presenter famous for hosting the BBC show Pointless, had longed to meet Ingrid before their romance began, however, having enjoyed exchanges online. She ended up being a guest on his game show House Of Games and they dated for two years before tying-the-knot.

Game show host Richard, who has two children from a previous marriage, had asked a comedian friend to investigate if Ingrid was single when he first became aware of her. Richard was told that she was not single – but with patience and luck led him to starting a romance with her eventually.

Revealing all to The Sunday Times, Richard reflected on how he pined for his now wife, and explained how he managed to manifest a romance. He said: “I was aware of Ingrid from social media and thought she was very funny, but beyond a single tweet we’d never communicated.

“I asked our mutual friend, the comedian Lou Sanders, to check if Ingrid was available. She wasn’t. Twelve months later, in 2021, Ingrid was a guest on my quiz show House of Games.”

The wait had led to a change in circumstances that Richard was able to leap on. He continued: “This time Lou told me Ingrid was available, so I spent a long day in front of the cameras desperately trying not to flirt. I made eye contact less with her than any other guest ever.”

After embarking on a romance, Richard and Ingrid opted to move in together weeks into their romance – and it seems Ingrid couldn’t stop herself falling for the 6’6″ TV star.

She told the publication: “I’d seen marriages not working, so I never wanted to make that commitment unless I knew for sure… When Richard first asked Lou if I was single, I was. I was aware of him from Twitter and the telly, and I thought he was a lovely, kind, clever man, but I’d decided to try IVF and thought, I can’t do this if I’m dating.

“But even then — and I don’t want to sound stalkerish — I had an inkling we’d get together later. I tried IVF three times (it was brutal) before accepting defeat. When Richard got back in touch, I’d made my peace with that process and was ready to move on.”

The couple got married in December 2022 in an intimate ceremony surrounded by family and close loved ones. Richard took to social media at the time to share a snap of himself and his bride – with the pair beaming after vowing to spend their lives together.

Richard wrote on X: “The most magical, joyful day on Saturday with my beautiful wife @ingridoliver100. Surrounded by wonderful friends and family, a day full of love and laughter. We’re so, so happy.”

The pair were inundated with messages of support and congratulations – with famous chef Nigella Lawson and comedian Dara Ó Briain among those sending positive messages towards the couple.

One fan trawled through Richard’s old messages shared on the app to dig one out which read: “I solemnly promise that if I get married you can all have a bank holiday.” The follower wrote alongside a screenshot of the original message: “Many congratulations to you both! (Can we cash this in now?)”

Heatwave causes water shortages in Iran as temps top 50C

As the country struggles with severe water shortages as a result of an ongoing heat wave, Iranian authorities have urged people to limit their drinking water.

According to the national meteorological service, Iran is currently experiencing its hottest week of the year, with some places experiencing temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit).

Due to the ongoing heat wave, Tehran province will observe a public holiday on Wednesday, according to government spokesman Fatemeh Mohajerani’s announcement in a post on X on Sunday.

Wednesday has been designated a holiday in Tehran province in light of the persistent extreme heat and the need to conserve water and electricity, she wrote.

According to meteorological reports, Tehran’s temperatures rose to 40C (104F) on Sunday and will rise to 41C (106F) on Monday.

Climate change effects

Iran’s water shortage is a significant issue, particularly in the country’s south’s arid provinces, where shortages are due to improper management and overexploitation of underground resources as well as the growing effects of climate change.

According to the ISNA news agency, Mehdi Chamran, the chair of the Tehran city council, advised residents to “conserve water to prevent drops in supplies.”

Authorities in several provinces have recently issued similar appeals to residents of Iran.

In order to combat the shortages, Tehran’s provincial water management company recommended that usage be cut by “at least 20%.”

Following years of steady decline in rainfall, it stated in a statement that “the reservoirs of the dams supplying water to Tehran are currently at their lowest level in a century.”

Authorities cut water supplies in some areas of the capital in a bid to combat the crisis, according to a conservative newspaper, Javan, which reported on Saturday. Some areas experienced “water outages lasting between 12 and 18 hours” in some cases.

Lowly Castleford dent Warrington’s play-off hopes

Betfred Super League

Castleford (12) 20

Tries: Asi, Lawler, Simm Goals: Atkin 4

Warrington (10) 14

Warrington’s Super League play-off ambitions suffered a big blow as they were beaten by struggling Castleford at a rain-lashed Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

Sam Stone’s score put Wire ahead early on, but the hosts hit back to lead 12-6 as Daejarn Asi crossed and George Lawler pounced on a handling mistake to ground.

Jake Thewlis’ try brought Warrington within two points at half-time, but Cas survived mounting pressure and went further ahead through Chris Atkin’s penalty and Josh Simm’s try.

Stefan Ratchford touched town to cut the lead to 20-14 after Alex Mellor’s sin-binning, but third-bottom Castleford held out to give interim head coach Chris Chester his first win.

Following four successive defeats, including back-to-back reverses to the league’s bottom two sides, and without a head coach since Danny McGuire’s dismissal, the omens did not look good when Castleford fell behind within six minutes.

Marc Sneyd’s up and under slipped through Fletcher Rooney’s grasp, and a few plays later Ben Currie sent Stone through for his first Warrington try.

But the home side hit back superbly and within 12 minutes were ahead thanks to some Wire charity.

Lacklustre defence allowed Asi to drag three tacklers over the line to level. And after blowing a two-on-one chance to retake the lead, the visitors trailed when a grubber kick slid past Lachlan Fitzgibbon, allowing Lawler to pounce.

After resisting mounting pressure, Castleford’s defence succumbed moments before the break when the ball was worked quickly out to the left, giving Thewlis space for a fine diving finish.

Cas almost squeezed in a third try before the hooter, but Australian centre Zac Cini’s surge was stopped right on the line.

Warrington restarted with urgency and Rooney only just prevented George Williams from collecting his own chip and chase before a Williams grubber kick to the corner narrowly evaded Thewlis.

Having soaked up the pressure, the home side landed a sucker-punch as Atkin booted them 14-10 ahead before Sneyd spilled the ball in the tackle on halfway and Cas broke away to score, with Simm finishing.

Warrington wanted more than a yellow card for Mellor when his high tackle stopped Thewlis from grounding a certain try

Yet they had hope again 90 seconds later when Ratchford nudged Innes Senior aside to ground Williams’ grubber kick.

‘Past the point of frustration’ – Burgess

Castleford Tigers interim head coach Chris Chester told BBC Radio Leeds:

“I’ve never questioned the players’ efforts. The effort has been really good on the whole, it’s just the belief and the confidence and winning breeds confidence, but on the flip side, when you keep losing you go into your shell a little bit more.

“I thought we were great today. The starting pack was really physical and in these conditions you have to kick the ball well and on the whole I think we did that.”

(On Alex Mellor’s high tackle): “I think a penalty try would have been harsh. I agree with the sin-binning, he’s caught him high.

“I thought we defended our line pretty well when we lost the captain and we just came through at the end.”

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess:

“It’s becoming very common, the poor decisions.

“I’m really struggling to understand that call, so I’ll ask for clarity (from referees’ chief Phil Bentham) again, and I’ll probably get an email saying, ‘yeah, we got it wrong, it should have been a penalty try, sorry Sam’.

“It’s past the point of frustration. All being said I have to get it on the record, we just weren’t good enough as well.

Castleford: Rooney, Simm, Cini, L Senior, I Senior, Asin, Atkin, Amone, Lawler, Singleton, Simbiken, Mellor, Westerman.

Interchanges: Wood, Griffin, Robb, Stimson.

Sin-bin: Mellor (67).
