Nine games, nine losses for troubled West Ham & Liverpool

Nine victories and nine losses. 24 goals were conceded, compared to three.

Readings from Liverpool and West Ham United’s Women’s Super League (WSL) combined are very bleak.

It appears that two of the league’s mainstays will be scrapping to avoid finishing 12th after almost a quarter of the season has already passed.

Both parties will be grateful that automatic relegation exists. The bottom team will face the third-place finisher in WSL2 for a top-flight spot next year as the WSL grows to 14 teams in 2026-27.

Two teams who, despite their status and history, appear unfit for this campaign will find little relief from that.

Although their records are similar to those of others, there are also differences in how they struggle. The main issues with Liverpool, the two-time top flight champion, lie in their attack, and West Ham also has defensive issues.

Gareth Taylor, who replaced Matt Beard in the summer, was hired by the Reds for this campaign.

Many members of the squad, who knew and played under him, will undoubtedly have had an impact due to Beard’s sudden passing, which caused the postponement of Liverpool’s WSL game at Aston Villa.

Taylor also had to make up for Olivia Smith in terms of football. The Canadian forward made seven league goals in her final season, but she became the first million-dollar player to leave Arsenal for the summer.

Complete dissatisfaction and frustration

The Reds’ 4-1 home defeat at home against Everton on day one appears to be a fluke. Liverpool has only lost one league game with more than two goals in the previous 12 minutes thanks to Cornelia Kapocs.

And they seem to be getting closer to a solution to the drought than ever. Liverpool only had three shots in the second half against the London City Lionesses.

Jenna Clark, the defender, later remarked, “The feeling is complete disappointment and frustration.”

“We did control the game’s spells, but in the second half, we didn’t do enough, and we ultimately just didn’t do enough to win.”

We are still trying to find our feet as a new team, new manager, and. There is no justification for it; we should still be working hard to compete and win games. That we’re not doing that at this time is really disappointing.

Mia Enderby, 20, made no threats as she faced London City on the first try. Sophie Roman Haug only started the match in the 90th minute off the bench, while Summer signing Beata Olsson offered little more as a second-half substitute.

Liverpool resultsBBC Sport

Taylor’s strategy plays a role. He used a 4-1-4-1 system, where it appeared as though the main goal was to completely eliminate all creativity or entertainment from the spectacle, against both Manchester United and London City.

The players are working their very best, the players are all working extremely hard, but we are currently suffering, the ex-Manchester City manager said.

“We need to get a little fitter, and fitness levels probably need to be looked at.” And also be able to consistently sprint in the direction that we want to, which can take time, especially if we’re trying to change our club’s approach and introduce a new playing style.

These uninspired and lifeless displays were the result of the manager’s choices, though.

Although most newly promoted teams have better management and resources, the sight of Liverpool clinging on for a point all afternoon at Hayes Lane was still unsettling.

Hammers are known to have “an appetite for self-destruction.”

West Ham resultsBBC Sport
The Hammers have conceded 16 goals in five games since losing to Aston Villa, scoring 2-0. At this point in the WSL campaign, only Yeovil Town has allowed more than they did in a season where they finished with minus two points.

The first Villa goal demonstrated their struggles. Kirsty Hanson was given the freedom to sweep a shot into the far corner of Dagenham by a short-corner routine that was performed without any pressure.

Rehanne Skinner, the manager, said, “It’s only those minor moments that have basically cost us the game.”

They are self-destructing in an abundance. A team that is low on confidence can be seen in the three goals conceded in Chelsea’s seven minutes, followed by two in seven at home to Villa on Sunday.

The Hammers are also having a goal fight, just like Liverpool. Viviane Asseyi, who scored 13 in 2024-25, struggled as well, while Shekira Martinez, who scored 10 in 12 WSL matches last year, has yet to register and spurned the best chance against Villa.

In the final third, Skinner said, “We were a little hesitant with some of the decisions.”

Since Skinner took over the reins two seasons ago, West Ham has had issues under her leadership.

Two of their three league victories came against relegated Bristol City in 2023-24. After losing five games last term, they were also at the bottom before a rebound in the second half of the campaign secured their victory.

Skinner stated at her media conference last week that she was “not concerned about the table.”

Many people want to talk about it in that manner because we finished last season very well, but it’s still very early,” she said.

However, this appears to be their most difficult WSL campaign to date, after six seasons of keeping their head above water and only placing in the top half.

Liverpool finished fourth two years ago, but if things stay that way, it will be remembered in 2020.

Newcastle Inflict More Pain On Postecoglou, Everton End Palace’s Unbeaten Run

Ange Postecoglou’s quest for a win was extended by 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace’s 19-game unbeaten run was ended by Jack Grealish’s late winner for Everton on Sunday.

In the midst of Thursday’s 3-2 Europa League defeat to Midtjylland, Forest fans called for Postecoglou to be fired after just six games.

The Australian is the first Forest manager to lose seven games in over 100 years, and he is now anxious to see if club owner Evangelos Marinakis makes another managerial change as a result of the international break.

In their first six Premier League games, Newcastle had only won one.

However, Bruno Guimaraes broke the deadlock with a brilliant strike from outside the box on 58 minutes.

After robbering Elliot Anderson of his former team, Guimaraes won a penalty inside the Forest box.

For his fourth goal for Newcastle since joining from Stuttgart last month, Nick Woltemade slotted the resulting spot-kick into the top corner.

Despite winning the Europa League, Forest falls to 17th place, the same position that postecoglou was fired by Tottenham at the end of last season.

Everton End Palace Run

After suffering a European hangover at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Palace was given the opportunity to come second.

The Eagles had a dominant first 45 minutes, but they were disappointed they didn’t add anything to Daniel Munoz’s finish after Ismaila Sarr’s pass.

However, the second half was affected by their Conference League victories against Dynamo Kyiv on Thursday.

After Maxence Lacroix awkwardly upended Beto, Everton fought back to avoid their first defeat at their new stadium, and Iliman Ndiaye equalized from the penalty spot.

Grealish’s first Everton goal came after Munoz’s clearance clearance rebounded off the Manchester City loanee into the top of the net.

Four victories for Villa

Aston Villa won the first match of the season with a 2-1 victory over Burnley, extending their run of fourth victories in the previous 11 days.

With his first goals since April, Donyell Malen scored the winning goal for Villa.

The Dutch forward jumped on Boubacar Kamara’s brilliant through ball to slot into the bottom corner to start the scoring.

Morgan Rogers was the person behind Malen’s second, which drilled confidently into the far corner.

Burnley is still in the relegation zone despite Lesley Ugochukwu pulling a goal back.

After drawing 1-1 with Brighton, Wolves are still firmly established at the top of the table.

Manchester City and Chelsea are the Seagulls’ only two league victories this year, and they once more failed to deliver in an arguably more winnable game.

Just seconds after Vitor Pereira was shown a red card, Bart Verbruggen’s own goal put Wolves in front.

The Dutch international had no idea how to turn Marshall Munetsi’s thunderous volley past the post before it rebounded into the net off his back.

Five minutes prior to the start of the match, Jan Paul van Hecke headed in a header from a corner that was equal to the result of Wolves’ stoppage-time draw with Tottenham last weekend.

UK police probe suspected arson attack on mosque as ‘hate crime’

In response to reports of a spate of violent crimes against religious sites, police in the UK are looking into a possible arson attack on a mosque in southern England as a “hate crime.”

On Saturday, just before 10 p.m. (22:00 GMT), officers were called to the scene of an arson attack on Phyllis Avenue in Peacehaven, East Sussex, according to local police.

According to them, the fire destroyed a car and the mosque’s front entrance, adding that no one was hurt.

A burned-out car is visible at the mosque’s entrance, according to images and video shared online.

Two people were inside the building when two balaclava-clad people tried to force the mosque door open, according to a report on CNN, which quoted a volunteer mosque manager. The building was then set on fire by two balaclava-clad people.

The mosque’s spokesperson stated in a statement that the community was “deeply saddened” by the “shocking” attack. We are deeply appreciative that no one was hurt, despite the incident having damaged our building and vehicles.

“This hateful behavior does not fit our town or our community.” We will continue to live up to the values that Peacehaven has always fostered, such as kindness, respect, and mutual support,” the statement continued.

We urged everyone to reject division and show compassion and unity when responding to hate, the statement continued.

According to Detective Superintendent Karrie Bohanna, the Muslim community was concerned by the attack. According to Bohanna, “there is already an increased police presence at the scene, and there are also additional patrols taking place across the county to provide reassurance,”.

There is no place for hate in the county, according to Sussex Police, who adopt a zero-tolerance policy against hate crime.

Possible “terrorist” act

The police must determine the origins of the attack and whether it qualifies as “an act of terrorism,” according to Mothin Ali, deputy leader of the Green Party.

People in this community will feel terrified and targeted for their faith because they were inside the mosque when it was firebombed, Ali said.

Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven Labour MP Chris Ward described the “disgusting” attack as “appalled.”

He claimed that there were no injuries, which was purely accidental. Our peaceful, accepting neighborhood has no place for this hatred and violence. We’ll find a way to stop it and show our support to those who are affected.

Following a ramming and stabbing on Thursday at a synagogue in northern Manchester, the attack comes. Two people were seriously hurt, and three were killed.

The Islamophobic arson attack was condemned by the Muslim Council of Britain, which urged authorities to “provide robust protection for all places of worship.”

The mosque attack “follows a disturbing pattern of intimidation and violence,” it continued. The council added in its statement that “a mosque was attacked just last week in Hounslow, while mosques across the nation were targeted by coordinated hate campaigns and bomb threats.”

Separately, the East London Mosque stated on X that “our communities must remain unwavering – Muslims, Jews, Christians, people of all faiths, and none – in standing together against extremism, intolerance, and violence.”

The British Jewish Board’s Deputies also criticized the mosque attack, stating on X that “every faith community has the right to worship without fear.” Better than this is our nation.

Following months of protests against asylum seekers and a social media campaign called #OperationRaisetheColours, the UK’s climate is still tense.

The call was heeded in recent weeks by those who pinned the flag of England with St. George’s Cross and Union Jacks to some shops, lampposts, roundabouts, and other public places across the country. The white stripes of zebra crossings have been painted with red crosses.

TV chef sparks debate after revealing she breastfed daughter until she was FOUR

TV chef Jasmine Hemsley has revealed she breastfed her daughter until she was four and a half years old, while continuing to breastfeed her toddler who is nearly two-years-old

A TV chef and author has ignited debate online after admitting she breastfed her daughter until she was four-years-old.

Jasmine Hemsley, 45, also reveals she still occasionally nurses her toddler son, triggering strong reactions from praise and support to fierce criticism.

In a video posted to Instagram, Jasmine described her journey in detail: “It’s been 4.5 years of continual breastfeeding, including 1 year 7 months of tandem somewhere in the middle.”

She explained that her daughter, Mahi, stopped nursing just weeks before her fourth birthday. Meanwhile, her two-year-old son, Dash, continues to breastfeed too, though Jasmine said he also eats three meals a day and doesn’t rely solely on breast milk.

Jasmine defended her decision, arguing that breastfeeding beyond infancy is “biologically normal” and pushing back against online trolls.

She said, “Extended breastfeeding of a four-year-old and older is pretty unremarkable in many parts of the world today.”

But not everyone was supportive. Some brutal comments on social media labelled her decision “disgusting,” while others questioned her life balance.

When one critic asked: “Do you not have a life? Make sure you have school-age children nursing on your body until you have your next baby,” Jasmine responded sharply: “Yes I have a life, I have a family, I cook, I clean, I have a job… where on earth have your opinions come from?”

According to the NHS, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for around the first six months, after which formula or complementary feeding can be introduced.

The guidance adds that, should mothers want to continue, there is no fixed age when breastfeeding must stop.

Similarly, the World Health Organization suggests exclusive breastfeeding for six months and recommends continuing breastfeeding along with appropriate solid foods for two years or beyond – though it leaves room for personal choices.

This leaves much of the middle ground open to interpretation and personal beliefs, which can lead to debate.

Jasmine’s followers were divided. Some called her a “supermum” for confidently sticking with what she believed was right for her children.

Others found her choice unsettling or unconventional. The wellness influencer said she has mostly found support from her candid breastfeeding post and is edging only slowly towards stopping.

Other followers penned: “Love this! What a wonderful breastfeeding advocate you are.”

Another wrote: “This is beautiful and so amazing. WTAF is wrong with some people.”

Jasmine added: “I’ve had quite a positive experience, bar the odd glances, but I’ve probably shamed myself more than I’ve been shamed.”

The TV chef, who shot to fame a decade ago with her sister Melissa as the glossy Hemsley + Hemsley duo, said she had never expected to feed her children for so long.

“I honestly thought I’d be done at the one-year mark if it went to plan,” she said.

TOWIE’s Junaid Ahmed desperate to patch things up with mum after family disowned him

Junaid Ahmed opens up about the heartache of his past and the olive branch. he’d like to offer his family after being thrown out of the family home as a teen for coming out as gay

Junaid Ahmed has had a fun but feisty time since joining The Only Way Is Essex four years ago. But despite the on-screen dramas – and falling in love with his now live-in boyfriend Joe Blackman – it’s what happened to Junaid before he signed up to join the Essex cast that weighs on him most heavily. After coming out to his parents at 18, Junaid was essentially banished from his family home in Peterborough.

Shortly after leaving home and heading for Essex, he lost his older brother and “best friend” in a drowning accident – and has had no contact with his parents or three younger siblings since then. As series 35 of the ITV2 reality show wraps, OK! exclusively catches up with Junaid, 30, to hear why he’s decided to address some unresolved traumas, and help others like him in the process…

READ MORE: Money-saving deal sees dehumidifier that ‘solves damp problem’ plummet to £9.56

Junaid. You’ve had quite the ride on TOWIE. Do you think you’re ever misunderstood?

Well, I’m sassy, argumentative and I can hold my own! But it’s all a sort of mask to cover what’s really going on. I’ve had to fight my whole life for who I am, and my coping mechanism has been to fight back, fight back, fight back. But that’s going now, because I’m happy with who I am. I’ve found my happiness and I’m not insecure like I used to be. I think there’s a reason behind all the madness.

Why do you want to open up about life before TOWIE?

Well, as a kid I never saw someone from an Asian Muslim Pakistani background on TV, especially with my sexuality as well. I had no one I could look up to. I don’t feel that, as a population, we’re seen or heard enough. We’re going in the right direction but there’s so much more to do. I always knew I wanted to make a change.

Can you tell us about your own experience?

I knew that growing up in my strict Muslim household, and being gay, was going to be a challenging situation. I prepared myself for the worst and, sadly, it happened. I knew I was never going to be financially stable at 18, I knew I wasn’t going to have family support and that I was going to be left out in the cold and be homeless. I knew I’d hit rock bottom, and that’s exactly what happened.

Were you ever tempted to stay silent?

A lot of my closest friends told me that coming out would be the hardest thing I’d ever do, and asked me if I was strong enough. To lose everything for my happiness? And the answer was “yes”. I knew I needed to live authentically, and I also knew what I’d lose.

You haven’t had contact with your family since, have you?

No, nothing. I’ve been thinking about my mum a lot recently. I miss her a lot, we were like best friends, so I think this is something I want to address sooner rather than later. I’d love a reconciliation with my mum.

Do you feel any resentment about them cutting you off?

No, I don’t blame my parents. The community we’re from is so tight, and the whole family, including my siblings, would’ve suffered a lot if they hadn’t done what they did. They would’ve all been shut out from the wider community, so if me going away by myself and making a new life for myself meant my family would be protected, I was prepared to do that.

What’s your relationship like with your faith?

Even at my lowest I prayed every day for peace and happiness. It’s the same thing I pray for every morning now. I still enjoy going to the mosque every day that I can, too. I’m in my own world when I’m in the mosque and I have my own relationship with God. I sit there, find peace and leave happy. You don’t need to lose your faith just because you’re gay.

You’ve shared a lot about your religion on TOWIE…

I will always bring my religion and culture to my life, work, relationships, my friendships. Joe knows to leave me alone for those few minutes in the morning and the evening when I’m praying. He’s so respectful and in tune with my faith.

Do you receive DMs from other men in your situation?

I receive thousands of messages from gay Muslim guys. It’s beautiful because so many of them are inspired by what I’ve done. I’ve had messages saying, “We live our life through you,” and tell me I make a difference to unheard and unseen people. It makes me realise why I do what I do. I want to make a difference. I want to make a change.

Do you offer advice?

I do engage because I wish I’d had someone I could message when I was younger. If someone tells me they want to tell their family, I’ll say it’s never going to be easy, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and you can live a happy, authentic life.

What do you think the future holds for you now?

I’d love to do some educational-style documentaries on the Muslim faith, and what it’s like to be Muslim and gay, to let them know there is help. The goal would be a community of openly gay Muslims out there living their authentic lives. I don’t want us to be the minority. I want us to be like everyone else, living our best lives.
