Lytham Festival cancelled while people travel to venue – ‘It would not be safe to go ahead’

Lytham Festival has been cancelled due to “adverse weather conditions”. The organisers released a statement on Friday evening hours before it was due to start.

They said: “Due to adverse weather conditions, we unfortunately have had to make the decision to cancel this evening. The safety of our customers, staff and artists is our priority and increasing high winds mean it would not be safe to go ahead. “

“All customers will receive a full refund for tonight’s show. Please wait to hear from your ticket agent for further information,” they said.

On Friday, the likes of Alanis Morissette, Train, Liz Phair and more were due to perform. Fans fumed as they took to the festival’s socials to claim they didn’t find out about the cancellations until last minute.

One user said underneath the festival’s Facebook post: “Omg I’m literally soaking wet waiting for the flyer and then some kind random lady told me it was cancelled. No email or text from you… very poor comms! “

Another furious user commented: “Ridiculous announcement too late, we are in a world where we absolutely know what the weather conditions will be, clearly not prepared with the right equipment. Glastonbury continues if your swimming to the stage. Bloody joke. “

One questioned why it took them so long to post the news on social media. They said: “We were turned away 40mins ago. Shocking that it’s taken this long to officially announce it on social media and your app. “

“Terrible communication…. . And I’m sure the weather was just as bad 2 years ago! Ridiculous! ! ! ” one commented.

Another fan, who is attending tomorrow’s event, said: “We’re coming tomorrow. Please give us more notice than this because we have a good way to travel. Thank you. “

This year’s festival is supposed to host five nights of live music on Lytham Green on the banks of the Ribble Estuary. Over 100,000 people attend every summer, with the likes of Lionel Richie and Lewis Capaldi previously headlining.

Stevie Wonder kicked off this year’s festival on Thursday evening with a supporting performance from Corinne Bailey Rae.

On Saturday, Justin Timberlake, Jess Glynne, Dagny and CTRL are performing while Sunday will see XV, Simple Minds, Texas and more on stage.

Mel B wedding: One Spice Girl ‘confirms attendance’ as three absent

Insiders open up about Mel B’s nuptials at St Paul’s Catherdral saying Rory McPhee is as “un-showbiz as they come” and the perfect match for the Spice Girl

When Mel B walks down the aisle at St Paul’s Cathedral, friends believe it really will be third time lucky for the Spice Girl.

The 50-year-old, who has been married twice before, is tying the knot on Saturday with hairstylist Rory McPhee, 37, who pals say is as “un-showbiz as they come”.

“It’s why everyone thinks that they get on so well… and why he is so good for Melanie,” says one confidante.

“He doesn’t come from that fake, entertainment world. He is down to earth, family orientated and just a normal bloke.”

Their connection runs deep, all the way to childhood. Mel’s cousin Christian Cooke and Rory were friends at school, and he has “always been on the outer edges of her life”.

The pal said: “It’s why this is almost certainly going to be a happy ever after. It’s as if the universe was just waiting for them to properly connect and fall in love. ”

Other friends of the singer have described Rory, who works at his family run Leeds hair salon, as “not your typical alpha male” that Mel has been attracted to in the past.

They added: “He is humble, kind, cooks roast dinners for her… It’s as far removed from her usual type that you can imagine. ”

Mel’s previous marriage to Stephen Belafonte broke down and she accused him of emotional and physical abuse, which he has always denied. Her first husband was Jimmy Gulzar.

Last year she said of Rory: “When I went back to England, he would come over and give me hair treatments… and as he was nurturing my curls back, I guess he was nurturing my trust and belief in a relationship. ”

Rory popped the question in October 2022 at the Cliveden Hotel in Berkshire, after decking the room in flowers and going down on one knee.

Mel said: “I was in my walking clothes, hair up in a bun,. And he did a whole spiel to me about me being his best friend. ”

Being awarded an MBE in 2022 for her services to charitable causes and vulnerable women meant the star was able to tie the knot at St Paul’s.

Mel, who eloped to Las Vegas to marry Stephen, says it will be a very different affair to her previous nuptials.

She has said previously: “This will be a very formal, English wedding where I want to feel regal and very proper. All the ladies will wear hats or fascinators. ”

The guest list has been a hot topic, not least about whether her Spice Girl bandmates would be on it.

Insiders say Emma Bunton will be there with husband Jade Jones, but Mel C, Victoria Beckham and Geri Horner will not.

Insiders say: “Victoria loves Mel but sadly she will be out of the country, and wishes she could be there. Mel C too would have been there but she is on tour in Sweden. They have a great deal of affection for Melanie. ”

Victoria was keen to show that Mel was in her thoughts as she posted a picture of herself and Mel looking glamorous at a recent event as she sent Rory and Mel best wishes.

The reason for Geri’s absence is not known for sure, but she is said to have a more strained relationship with Mel than the others.

Insiders say she was left mortified after Mel claimed on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2019 that she was intimate with Geri while they were in the Spice Girls.

Despite reports she was set to wear a wedding dress designed by Victoria, she has picked out two other gowns instead. One by British designer Josephine Scott for today and another by US bridal specialist Justin Alexander for a second wedding ceremony abroad in the next few weeks. Mel said: “It’s a perfect blend of my love for Britain and America.”

For the first ceremony, Mel will walk down to the aisle to an organ.

Says the insider: “Mel wanted it to be all very traditional and very much in keeping with the classic surroundings. ”

The couple will say their vows in the crypt underneath the cathedral.

“It’s a dream that she is able to do so, and that her MBE opened the door for her,” says a pal.

As for the second ceremony, there are some suggestions it could be in Morocco.

Says our insider: “This will be a smaller, more relaxed affair with a less starry guest-list and be more family orientated. ”

Today, however, the guest-list is distinctly A-list with pop svengalis Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller expected to make an appearance.

Mel’s’ children Phoenix, 26, Angel, 18, and Madison, 13, will all be there, and are smitten with Rory.

This is the 15th meeting between the sides, with Bayern winning eight and PSG six of the matchups so far.

Their first meeting came in 1994, with PSG winning both matches in the Champions League group stages.

The teams were also pitted together in the 2020 UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon, with Bayern winning 1-0 thanks to a header from former PSG player Kingsley Coman.

PSG team news

PSG could hand Ousmane Dembele his first start of the tournament, following his substitute appearance in the 4-0 win against Inter Miami.

Bayern Munich team news

Jamal Musiala managed 18 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the win against Flamengo and could feature once again as he continues his comeback from injury.

Leroy Sane has left the club, having completed his move to Galatasaray, while Coman could miss out with a knock.

PSG coach Luis Enrique’s pre-match thoughts

“At this stage of the competition, it will be difficult no matter who the opponent is. Now is the time to think about resting, we need to prepare well for the match, but we have the time to do so. We’re very happy. ”

Bayern striker Harry Kane’s pre-match thoughts

“We have to believe [we can win the Club World Cup] for sure. We’re going up against a tough opponent in the next round, no doubt, Champions League winners. We have to be ready for that, but we feel like, on our day, we can beat anyone. It would be a dream come true to go all the way and win it, but there’s games before that. ”

Sunderland have signed DR Congo midfielder Noah Sadiki from Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract and joins for a reported fee of £15m.

Sadiki made 108 appearances for Union since joining from Anderlecht in 2023 and helped the club win the Belgian title last season.

The Brussels-born midfielder, who can also play in defence, represented Belgium at youth level but switched allegiance to DR Congo and made his senior international debut in 2024.

“I want to thank everyone for welcoming me to Sunderland,” said Sadiki.

“This is a huge club, but what convinced me was speaking to the people. They spoke about the history, what they want to build, and their belief in the part that I can play. “

Sadiki is Sunderland’s third signing of the summer as they prepare for their first season back in the Premier League since 2016-17.
