Ben Sulayem set to stand unopposed in FIA election

Incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem is poised to stand unopposed in December’s election for the presidency of motorsport’s governing body, the FIA.

Three potential candidates had expressed an interest in standing – American Tim Mayer, Swiss former racing driver Laura Villars and Belgian journalist Virginie Philpott.

But a quirk of the FIA’s election rules means that no other candidate is able to challenge Ben Sulayem.

Presidential candidates must submit a list of their prospective vice-presidents for sport, which must be selected from each of the FIA’s six global regions.

But the world council list contains only one candidate from South America, Brazilian Fabiana Ecclestone, wife of former F1 boss Bernie. She is already a member of Ben Sulayem’s team.

FIA statutes state that the body will “respect the highest standards of governance, transparency and democracy, including anti-corruption functions and procedures”.

FIA rules require it to be neutral in the election process and that it has an obligation to provide “equal treatment between candidates for the FIA’s presidency”.

Mayer declined to comment, while the FIA has not responded to a series of questions from BBC Sport on the matter.

Robert Reid – who resigned as Ben Sulayem’s vice-president of sport in April, citing “a fundamental breakdown in governance standards within motorsport’s global governing body” – wrote earlier this week in a post on LinkedIn: “Each presidential candidate must present a full slate, including seven vice-presidents drawn from list of World Council nominees.

“If the incumbent already controls those names in any region through persuasion, pressure or promise, then no challenger can form.

“The process looks democratic, but in practice it locks the door from the inside. It isn’t democracy. It isn’t even unusual. But that doesn’t make it right.”

There is also doubt surrounding the eligibility of Daniel Coen from Costa Rica for the list of world motorsport council nominees, given that members must come from countries that host international motorsport events, which Costa Rica does not.

In June a new rule was passed that allowed the FIA Senate, which is controlled by Ben Sulayem, to nominate two candidates to the world council.

Critics say this is a means by which Ben Sulayem could unblock himself from standing for election if he was ever unable to meet the requirement for vice-presidential candidates.

The nomination via the Senate route would not be available to non-incumbents.

The development follows a period of controversy surrounding the conduct of Ben Sulayem and his governance of the FIA.

At the last two FIA general assemblies, changes to the statutes have been approved that Austria’s national motoring club, the OAMTC, said risked “further contributing to the erosion of the FIA’s reputation for competent and transparent governance”.

Throughout last year, Ben Sulayem removed a series of senior figures in the FIA after all had raised questions about his conduct or that of his office.

Norway FA president welcomes Gaza deal before vital Israel World Cup tie

Norwegian Football Federation President Lise Klaveness is looking forward to meeting her Israeli counterpart before a World Cup qualifier between the two on Saturday, following the announcement of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

The Norwegian FA said in August that it would donate profits from ticket sales from Saturday’s Group I game against Israel to support the work of Doctors Without Borders in Gaza, prompting immediate criticism from the Israelis.

“I always meet other football presidents before we play games. I’m very much into dialogue, and the more difficult it gets, the more important is that we meet, even if it’s difficult,” Klaveness said on Friday.

Israel’s FA criticised the ticket money move at the time, saying: “It would be nice if some of the amount were directed to try to find a condemnation by the Norwegian FA of the October 7 massacre that claimed the lives of hundreds of Israeli citizens and children.”

Israel’s government ratified the ceasefire with Hamas in the early hours of Friday morning, clearing the way to suspend hostilities in Gaza within 24 hours and free Israeli captives held there within 72 hours after that.

“We are, of course, extremely happy, on behalf of the involved parties in the whole world, that there is a ceasefire. Football is nothing compared to peace, and now the bombs can stop over Gaza, and that hostages can come home,” Klaveness said.

“That’s very important, and I think it’s very important now that all of us, football leaders and leaders in all big organisations, now give this peace plan energy and momentum. We all know it’s a long way to sustainable peace, but it’s everyone’s responsibility to give it energy and momentum.”

The Norwegian FA has worked closely with police in Oslo on security matters around the game, and Klaveness,  a 44-year-old mother of three who played for her country at two Women’s World Cups, said she hoped Israeli fans would feel safe attending.

“They are warmly welcome, and nothing that we say or state should ever be interpreted as directed towards them or that we don’t feel sympathy for what they’ve gone through with this horrific trauma of October 7th 2033,” she said.

“When we say something about condemning the attack on Gaza, it does not mean that we condemn the attack on their people any less.”

Hull KR & Wigan set for repeat of 2024 Grand Final

Two familiar foes will contest the showpiece event of the Super League season, but this year it could be a very different tale.

Wigan Warriors, the 2024 victors, face Hull KR in Saturday’s Grand Final for the second time in as many years.

Just 12 months ago, the Cherry and Whites sealed victory in a nervy final under the lights at Old Trafford, capping off a historic quadruple.

In 2025 it is the Robins who stand on the precipice of sporting greatness as they target a trio of trophies of their own.

Super League Grand Final: Hull KR v Wigan

Hull KR ‘have to get job done’

It is a story that has been told time and again over the past couple of years, if for no other reason than to highlight just how much of an achievement it is for Hull KR to be tussling at the top.

Just nine years ago, they lost their Super League spot in agonising fashion having initially led Salford Red Devils in the 2016 Million Pound Game before losing on golden point and dropping into the Championship as a result.

Less than a decade later, they look set to complete one of the most impressive comebacks in sport, let alone rugby league, has ever seen and talismanic half-back Mikey Lewis summed it up best in his pre-match media commitments.

“We’ve built something at the club so we’ve got to believe each other and get this job done,” he told BBC Radio Humberside.

“That’s something that will fuel us on Saturday.”

Their record this season makes for remarkable reading having won the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield – not bad for a club which finished bottom of the pile in Super League just five years ago.

What makes this all the more impressive is the fact that Hull KR have been so undeterred by Wigan’s quadruple last season that they’ve now threatened to win a treble themselves.

“When I first came to the club we were in a relegation battle and there wasn’t much in it, either,” forward Dean Hadley, who joined in 2019, added.

“To say five or six years on you’ve played in back-to-back Grand Finals, you’ve won a Challenge Cup and League Leaders, it’s a totally different place.

Hull KR set up their place in Saturday’s final off the back of beating St Helens in the semi-final and Saturday will see some departures for the east Hull club.

With the youthful but formidable Lewis, accompanied by the wisdom and stewardship of senior figures like Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Micky McIlorum, Hull KR have assembled one of the most forbidding sides of the modern era.

Yet the club, and sport, will wave goodbye to the veteran pair after Saturday’s game as they retire.

For Lewis, Saturday’s Grand Final is not just an opportunity to win silverware, write themselves into the record books and tick another box – it is a chance to pay respect to two of the sport’s greats in style.

“To put them into retirement having won all three trophies in the first year of being at the club would be a massive achievement for them,” he added.

“It’s something we’d be really proud of. The leadership and the accountability and the honesty they’ve brought to this team this year has been massive.

Wigan’s chance to win three in a row

For Wigan Warriors, they can regain some glory having missed out on silverware so far in 2025, not least because of how impressive Saturday’s opponents have been.

The Cherry and Whites have their own record to chase. Having reached a 14th Grand Final, they are 80 minutes away from winning three in a row for the first time in their history.

In Luke Thompson, they have the perfect man to guide them to glory at Old Trafford, with the front rower never losing in a Grand Final in four appearances – twice with St Helens and twice with Wigan.

“I see a lot of similarities. I see a lot of commitment and professionalism. The hunger,” Thompson told BBC Radio Manchester about the current Wigan set up compared to his time with Saints.

“They’re slightly different teams. I think we play a bit differently but I think the quality that underpins both teams, you can definitely see some similarities.”

One man who could be in the mix for the Cherry and Whites is Brad O’Neill, who has his own motivation to take to the field on Saturday.

The Wigan hooker missed out last year with a serious knee injury and had conflicting emotions having been unable to play his part in their quadruple glory.

“It was definitely a proud moment for myself watching on and seeing the team do something special that year,” he said.

Wigan captain Liam Farrell is no stranger to a Super League Grand Final and knows what it takes to win on the big occasion.

Whereas some players would be unnerved by the big occasion Farrell, in contrast, thrives off his nerves.

“If I played one game for Wigan, never mind the Grand Final, I’d have been very happy. But to be in the position I’m in now, leading my team out for a third year in a row, it’s a very special feeling,” Farrell told BBC Radio Manchester.

“I can’t really put into words how special it is, but it’s one I’m excited about and to create some more memories with the special group we’ve got.

“It calms me down, the fact that I do still get nervous. It makes me realise that I still care about what I do. I want us to win, I don’t want to lose.

“The club wants success and the town wants success. I think that’s where the nerves come from and I like the fact that I do get them.”

Farrell, a Wigan veteran, might well be in the twilight of his career at 35 but he still believes he has the fight in him to continue and will not hang up his boots regardless of the result on Saturday.

“If you’re able to win one and go out like that, it’d be a nice way to go out, but I still think I’ve got a little bit more to give and the club wanted me to still stay on so I’m very happy about that,” he added.

Charlotte Church fans can meet her on ‘witchy’ 5-day retreat but it isn’t cheap

Charlotte Church is offering a lucky few the chance to go on a five-day witchcraft retreat next year, though the prices per room and per person certainly don’t come cheap

A five-day retreat with singer-songwriter Charlotte Church is currently open to book, but the “witchy” retreat doesn’t come cheap. Charlotte, 39, who is now appearing on BBC show The Celebrity Traitors, is offering a guided retreat of witchcraft and rituals during the Waning Gibbous Moon phase. The retreat in Wales is available for 17 people per session.

But the price of said retreat, namely the accommodation costs, has left some people staggered. While some fans are excited for the “incredible” opportunity to experience witchcraft wonders with Church, the eye-watering price may put a few people off attending. The “Witch Retreat” has prices starting from £1,199 per person for the retreat.

Content cannot be displayed without consent

That would be the cheapest option for a couple according to the booking website, which also has accommodations available to solo travellers from £1,299 per person.

A description for the event reads: “An enchanting 5-day retreat led by Charlotte Church & Tree Carr for 17 souls ready to embody their magic through ritual, nature, and deep witchcraft practices during the Waning Gibbous Moon phase.

“This immersive retreat is designed to activate the witch within: blending ancient wisdom, elemental magic, and deep self-exploration.

“Led by singer and spiritual guide Charlotte Church and High Priestess and author Tree Carr, this retreat is an opportunity to rekindle your craft through ritual, herbalism, dream-work, plant-spirit connection, meditation, sound, and sacred art.

“The Dreaming, a haven nestled in magical lands of Wales, provides the perfect setting for witches to reconnect with the old ways. Through guided experiences in forest bathing, herbal alchemy, candle magic, dream initiation, and communal rituals, we awaken our power and forge a deeper relationship with nature, self, and spirit.”

Each day is also to be themed around “earth, water, air, fire and spirit” though to reconnect with nature it’ll cost over £1,000 for your accommodation alone.

While the rooms do look stunning, attendees will be sharing with others in a communal bunk unless the booking party “prefer solitude”.

The site adds: “Our distinctive approach assigns beds individually rather than by room, encouraging interactions with fellow guests. Embracing shared living is ingrained in The Dreaming values, creating an environment where meaningful bonds flourish.”

Two events are scheduled for next year, one between July 17 and July 21, the second between November 13 to November 17, 2026.

Some were thrilled by the announcement despite the price of accommodation. One person took to Instagram and wrote: “Goosebumps!! What an offering! So potent and powerful and present.

“The energy of WITCH is truly alive and she is undeniable! Your video creation is INCREDIBLE!! I pray to my ancestors that I can somehow come.”

Others said they were “manifesting” a place on the witch retreat, with one writing: “Stunning. I’m going to manifest a place for myself!”

Temu shopper orders ‘designer’ shoes and can’t get over what turns up

Online marketplace Temu is popular with shoppers thanks to its wide range of budget-friendly fashion, accessories, beauty supplies, décor items and more – and it’s even got designer dupes

A Temu shopper ordered a £25 imitation of a designer pair of trainers and got quite a shock when she opened her parcel and finally saw the shoes in the flesh. Temu is known and loved for its eclectic array of budget friendly products, with the online marketplace home to countless items spanning departments including fashion, homeware and more.

Content creator Aimee Michelle recently partnered with the company to share a shopping haul with her 132K YouTube subscribers. Among the items featured were a pair of shoes, which cost her £24.81 and bear a striking resemblance to the coveted New Balance X Miu Miu 530 SL suede sneakers, which cost £870.

The Temu version pictured online comes in the same brown colour – though the fabric isn’t suede – with dual-tone laces. They’re also available in black, and are currently on offer for £20.16. Sometimes, when ordering online, the expectation doesn’t quite match up with reality but this wasn’t the case for Aimee.

Describing Miu Miu as “the hottest luxury brand of the moment,” Aimee said shoppers could save a tidy sum by snapping up Temu’s cheaper version of the trainers as opposed to the designer original.

She then said: “I can’t say I’m a personal fan of them, but they are definitely very, very hot right now in the luxury fashion world.”

When the shopper opened the box containing the budget-friendly shoes, she was visibly impressed.

Aimee said: “Okay, these are actually quite nice. I definitely thought they were giving me those Miu Miu vibes. And you guys, the quality, oh my gosh, if you were styling this from a distance, you would not know.”

She continued: “So, yeah, I loved these ones. I think they did it in a few different colourways on the Temu listing, but I of course went for the original chocolate brown with the white and then deeper chocolate brown laces, and the cream insides.

“These are genuinely really nice quality. They’re really well made. I don’t know how much they’re going to suit me, but they are definitely a designer dupe. and they are definitely a very hot style of shoe at the moment.

“Even on the high street, I’ve seen these, which obviously they’ve taken inspiration from Miu Miu but yeah, you can get them for a fraction of the price on Temu.”

Miu Miu’s New Balance X Miu Miu 530 SL suede sneakers are available in a brown shade named “cinnamon” on the company’s website, as well as a more neutral ecru shade.

Both colourways feature two sets of laces in different colours, giving them a more unique look than standard trainers.

The cinnamon version comes with brown, orange and cream laces while the ecru trainers come with green, brown and cream laces.

In the comments section beneath Aimee’s video, fellow YouTube users shared their thoughts. One person said: “I love your Temu hauls, one of my faves to watch”.
