Angela Mortimer Barrett, Britain’s 1961 Wimbledon women’s singles champion, has died at the age of 93.
Mortimer Barrett, who was born in Plymouth, won three Grand Slam singles titles and one in doubles, which came alongside Anne Shilcock at Wimbledon in 1955.
Her other Grand Slam singles wins came at the 1955 French Championships and 1958 Australian Championships, and she was runner-up at Wimbledon in 1958 when American Althea Gibson defeated her in the final.
Mortimer Barrett contended with numerous challenges throughout her career, including hearing loss, and she was battling a troublesome case of tennis elbow prior to her triumphant 1961 Wimbledon run which ended with her beating fellow Briton Christine Truman 4-6 6-4 7-5 in the final.
She was known as Angela Mortimer at the time of her Slam wins and in 1967 married John Barrett, a fellow British tennis player who became a distinguished tennis writer and broadcaster.
Mortimer Barrett was also awarded an MBE in 1967 for services to tennis.
Debbie Jevans, chair of the All England Club, said Mortimer Barrett will be remembered “for her determination and extraordinary dedication”.
“An honorary member since her triumph in 1961, Angela has been a familiar face and valued member for more than six decades. Her passing leaves a hole in the fabric of the club, and she will be greatly missed,” Jevans said.
“On behalf of everyone at the All England Club, I offer my sincere condolences to Angela’s husband, John; their children, Michael and Sarah Jane; grandchildren, family and friends.”
David Gaudu produced a superb sprint to win the uphill finish on the third stage of the Vuelta a Espana as Jonas Vingegaard retained the overall lead.
It was the third Vuelta stage win of the 28-year-old Frenchman’s career, and his first since 2020.
Gaudu, who was third on Sunday, outfoxed his rivals on the final corner to finish just in front of Danish pair Mads Pedersen and Vingegaard.
Groupama-FDJ rider Gaudu took a superb inside line on the tight bend and had the punch to out-drag Pedersen in the final 50 metres, with Vingegaard unable to match them.
Vingegaard collected a four-second bonus for finishing third and although Gaudu earned 10 seconds for winning and has moved level on time with the Dane, the two-time Tour de France champion retained the overall lead on count-back of the finishing places so far.
Pedersen had been strongly fancied for the 134.6km stage from San Maurizio Canavese to Ceres and Gaudu acknowledged it was a shock to beat the Lidl-Trek man.
“It was a surprise, yes, because I was thinking on the bus this morning the finish was more for Pedersen, but they said I could win today,” Gaudu said.
“The team did a very very good job and I’m very very proud to win for me and for the team. This is the best beginning of the Vuelta.”
Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock finished 23rd and remains fifth in the general classification.
Tuesday’s stage, a 206.7km medium mountain route from Susa to Voiron, is the last of four stages in Italy before the Vuelta heads to Spain.
One ‘stolen’ Visma bike was returned though
Meanwhile, Visma’s Axel Zingle feared his bike had been stolen during Sunday’s stage while he was receiving medical treatment for the dislocated shoulder that ended his Vuelta.
The French rider was involved in the crash that sent his team leader Vingegaard to the tarmac at the foot of the final climb on a rainy day.
He remounted but dislocated his shoulder for a second time while reaching for a snack and was forced to abandon.
“I wanted to grab a gel and I dislocated my shoulder again, so I had to stop,” Zingle said.
“There was a guy there who didn’t speak English very well, so I gave him my bike while I got into the ambulance to have my shoulder put back in place.
“When I came out, my bike was gone.”

James Justin has been signed by Leeds for a fee of £10 million.
The full-back joins Elland Road for a four-year deal, becoming the club’s tenth summer signing.
Leicester will pay the 27-year-old £8 million in additions, with an additional £2 million.
With Leeds hosting Newcastle in their next Premier League game on Saturday, Justin is not expected to be available for Sheffield Wednesday’s second-round encounter with the Carabao Cup.
Justin joined the Foxes in 2019 after beginning his career at Luton Town, where he has made 169 starts. The right-back can also play left-back.
I’m over the moon to have joined a club of this size and history, and returning to the Premier League was a huge accomplishment for me, James said.
“The atmosphere in the stadium is unquestionably one of the best in world football.”
I’m happy that the fans are supporting me this time because it’s always a challenging task to be an opposing team.
Before the summer transfer window closes, Leeds are eager to strengthen their squad, and they last week signed AC Milan forward Noah Okafor for £18 million.
Other recent additions to their roster include Udinese’s Jaka Bijol, England’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, midfielders Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff, Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri, and Swedish left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson. After playing for Wolfsburg last year, center-back Sebastiaan Bornauw and forward Lukas Nmecha were both hired.
Before the week-long event in Black Rock Desert in Nevada officially opening yesterday, Burning Man’s Black Rock City was hit by dust and wind storms over the weekend.
On Saturday, a dust storm reportedly hit Burning Man’s Black Rock City and sped up to 50 mph.
A dust storm involving winds of up to 50mph is said to have led to several injuries and damaged campsites at Burning Man’s Black Rock City on the weekend. The gate into the community in the US was temporarily closed at one point.
The event, held annually in Black Rock Desert, located north of Reno, Nevada, is running from August 24 to September 1 this year. Early arrivals for Burning Man, which has attracted celebrities such as Cara Delevingne and Paris Hilton in previous years, faced adverse weather on Saturday though.
Images from social media sites showed dusty conditions at the site, with wind and visibility affecting tents as a result. Four minor injuries are said to have occurred. Additionally, it’s reported that a community art installation was destroyed and that campsites were damaged.

According to the radar we were monitoring, one attendee, Angie Peacock, “we were anticipating 35 mph winds, so we made sure everything was secure around our camp,” she told the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday. Very quickly, things completely turned “white out” conditions.
Attendeess claimed they could not see 15 feet in front of them at the time. Even though we tried our best to tie everything down, we saw structures being torn down and ripped down by the winds, according to Angela.
Angie claimed that some people hid in shipping containers while others stayed in their cars. The attendees claimed that everyone has come “closer together” because of the situation and are confident that their camp will resurrect.

A Burning Man spokesperson told the Mirror: “Black Rock City 2025 is underway, and the communal effort and resilience of the Burning Man community is on full display. Participants are setting up camp and, due to Saturday evening’s dust and wind storms, are supporting others where repair work is needed for camps and art installations.”
The Black Rock Desert is not specifically addressed by the media, according to them. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory on Saturday, August 23 for the Black Rock Desert.
“Over 45 mph were spewed over 45 mph over a long period of time.” The participants and staff were advised to close their camps and refrain from driving in low visibility. Normal operations resumed within two hours after the Gate was temporarily closed.
The spokesperson then confirmed that the storm had resulted in a number of minor injuries. According to them, “The wind and dust caused four minor injuries.”
The statement concluded by reiterating the status of weather updates on the BRC Dashboard for the community. The spokesperson added that those attending can access a survival guide that is available on the company’s website.
Burning Man participants and the general public can access the BRC Dashboard to find out about Black Rock City’s most recent weather and traffic updates. Details on preparedness and safety are included in the detailed information in the Burning Man Survival Guide, which was provided to all participants and is accessible to the public.

Naim Qassem, the group’s secretary-general, warned that putting an end to Israel’s “aggression” would only help to secure Lebanon’s sovereignty.
Qassem stated that the Lebanese government must first ensure that Israel adheres to the ceasefire agreement before beginning discussions on a national defense strategy.
The Hezbollah leader said that the resistance would continue to serve as a “strong barrier” that would prevent Israel from achieving its objectives and that it would be impossible for Israel to remain in Lebanon or carry out its expansionist project there.
He rebuffed Israeli demands to first withdraw from Lebanese territory, release prisoners, and halt attacks on the Lebanese government and foreign suggestions to include Hezbollah’s arsenal in a national defense strategy.
Stop the aggression if you truly want sovereignty. We won’t give up the weapons we have in our possession, Qassem said.
He continued, “It cannot be trusted that Lebanon’s sovereignty will survive if this government operates in its current form.”
A resolution tasked the army with developing a strategy to disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year was approved by the Lebanese Council of Ministers last month.
The decree was in line with a proposal from the United States that contained flimsy assurances that Israel would end its occupation of southern Lebanon and launch daily attacks against the country if Hezbollah’s weapons were taken down.
Hezbollah has stated that it will “treat” the decision as if it doesn’t exist.
Israel said it would consider reducing its military presence in southern Lebanon if Beirut’s armed forces invaded Hezbollah’s territory. Qassem made these remarks as Israel made its remarks. Israel’s support for Lebanon’s cabinet’s recommendation to assign an army with a disarmament plan by the end of the year was made public by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Monday.
The Israeli military will engage in reciprocal measures, including a gradual reduction, if the Lebanese Armed Forces take the necessary steps, according to the Israeli prime minister’s office.
The Israeli announcement came a day after Netanyahu had a meeting with US Ambassador Tom Barrack, who has been heavily involved in a plot to detach Israeli forces from Lebanon.
‘Step-by-step’
Barrack urged Israel to honor its obligations under the Hezbollah ceasefire.
“The Lebanese government has done their part,” he said. “There is always a step-by-step approach. The first step was made by them. Israel must now follow through on what Barrack described during meetings with Lebanese officials last week in Beirut.
US deputy envoy Morgan Ortagus arrived in Beirut on Monday, according to Lebanon’s official National News Agency, before scheduled meetings with officials.
Despite a US-brokered ceasefire in November, Israel still holds five positions in southern Lebanon. Within two months, Lebanon’s armed forces were scheduled to take control of the nation’s southern region, which has long been Hezbollah’s mainhold.
In nearly daily violations of the November truce, Israeli forces have continued to air attack Lebanon, killing and injuring people, including Syrian refugees, and destroying infrastructure and properties.
One person was killed in a drone attack in southern Lebanon during the most recent Israeli aggression. The drone struck a pick-up truck on the Bint Jbeil district’s Ain al-Mazrab-Tebnine road, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health.
Later on Monday, the Israeli military claimed in a statement that it had killed a Hezbollah member and that it would “continue to operate to remove threats posed to the Israeli citizens.”
After Lebanon’s civil war of 1975-1990, Hezbollah, the only group that still had its weapons, suffered significant damage from the assassination of senior leaders, including former chief Hassan Nasrallah, the assassination of thousands of its fighters and civilians killed, and tens of thousands of Shia and other communities were forced to flee their destroyed homes.
London Spirit 112-2 (62 balls): Chathli 53 (29), Redmayne 42 (30), Franklin 2-10
Spirit won by eight wickets.
With a crushing eight-wicket victory over city rivals Oval Invincibles, London Spirit increased their chances of making it to The Hundred knockout stages.
With both captain Charlie Dean and seamer Eva Gray taking 2-12, Victory was built on a standout performance both on the field and with the ball.
Before Kira Chathli and Georgia Redmayne powered Spirit to victory, the already-eliminated Invincibles were limped to 108-8 from their 100 balls.
Chathli continued her strong campaign and recorded a 26-ball half-century with a six from the beginning of the draft.
Moments after Redmayne, who made 42 from 30, was also dismissed, Charli Knott completed the task for Spirit with a massive 38 balls to spare, with only two more needed.
Spirit’s return to form, which they have lost in their previous two games, puts them four points clear of Manchester Originals in fourth, putting an end to Trent Rockets’ chances of qualifying for the elimination game.

It was crucial that the Spirit attack was on it against a strong Invincibles top order after choosing to bowl first in such a crucial match.
When Meg Lanning was pushed out, Kate Coppack, who had the opportunity to score with her first ball, was held to her right by wicketkeeper Redmayne for a difficult chance diving.
They persevered with impressive discipline despite a breakthrough that was not imminent.
In the final 15 balls of the powerplay, Dean and Gray were the only ones who had conceded just seven runs, but the skipper removed Lanning just as the Invincibles openers appeared to be settled.
It was Gray’s turn to end a partnership that was beginning to threaten Marizanne Kapp and Alice Capsey.
Outstanding seamer. With 75% of her deliveries being tight to the stumps and the other 25% being in the channel outside off, she didn’t bowl a single delivery too far outside off.
With only two wickets apiece, Dean and Gray, who had excellent control, undoubtedly contributed to the creation of others as the pressure mounted and wickets piled up, with Dean’s one-handed stunner being the pick of a number of superb catches.
What’s going on Tuesday?
Tomorrow is another derby day for Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers at Headingley.
Both games will be available to watch live on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer, with coverage for the women’s game beginning at 14:45 BST and the men’s game following at 18:00 BST.
