Richard Osman sees ‘plea’ get ignored in ‘disappointing’ career update

Netflix has reversed a decision to give the film adaptation of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club a wide UK cinema release, but the move hasn’t pleased everyone

Richard Osman’s heartfelt appeal for a broad cinema release of his book-turned-film fell on deaf ears.

Richard’s crime caper The Thursday Murder Club, starring silver screen luminaries Dame Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, Sir Ben Kingsley and David Tennant, has been transformed into a film.

The telly quiz master from House of Games and BBC show Pointless took to Instagram to laud Netflix for heeding the public outcry and deciding against keeping the flick away from UK theatres.

The 54 year old Osman shared the good tidings: “Some very good news for everyone who wanted to see The Thursday Murder Club in UK cinemas.

“Netflix have listened to the clamour, and the film will now have a run in UK cinemas. See what happens when you all ask,” reports Coventry Live.

But this brief moment of jubilation turned sour for British cinema owners when they learned that the movie would be hitting a mere handful of over 30 screens nationwide.

Phil Clapp, boss of the UK Cinema Association, remarked: “Netflix can choose where and when they release their content and given that we’re still in recovery those venues which are allowed to play the film will more than welcome the box office. But a significant majority of the potential audience are now likely to be disappointed. “

At an earlier event this year, Netflix’s top dog Ted Sarandos made the contentious claim that audiences prefer the comfort of their homes for movie-watching, dubbing the cinema experience an “outdated concept”.

Netflix enthusiasts, brace yourselves for “The Thursday Murder Club,” a captivating drama where four savvy pensioners crack the case of a slain property tycoon in a fictional Kent village, premiering on August 22.

In other news, Richard made a bold pitch to his BBC chiefs during a natter with Marina Hyde on their The Rest is Entertainment podcast. He’s keen on House of Games getting the live treatment, exclaiming: “Anyone at the BBC listening, listen – let’s do it. But you know, I mean, it only takes 40 minutes anyway. “

Although he’s all for the thrill of live shows, Richard pointed out that recording way in advance is nothing unusual in TV land, divulging that some programmes are wrapped up months or even years before hitting our screens.

Spilling the beans on TV secrets, he disclosed that an unnamed big ITV programme has gone as far as taping next year’s Christmas special a whole 18 months early, confessing: “I got a call through the other day from someone who had been taping a big ITV show, which recorded next year’s Christmas show last week.”

Fearne Cotton’s ex-husband, Jesse Wood, has made his first public appearance with his new girlfriend, Gemma Gregory. The son of Rolling Stones rocker, Ronnie Wood, split with Fearne in December after a decade of marriage, with the mum-of-two, 43, announcing the sad news on Instagram with a “heavy heart”.

Three months ago, Made In Chelsea star, Gemma, 39, posted snaps of her and Jesse snuggling up in the sunshine as the musician moved, 48, on with his life. And now they’ve rocked up together for a VIP screening of 60’s icon Twiggy’s new self-titled movie at the Selfridge’s cinema in London, looking every inch a couple.

Jesse grins in a snap of the pair, who pose alongside Twiggy, cutting a casual figure in a t. shirt and jeans. Gemma, meanwhile, sports a racy cutaway black dress with a jacket around her waist as she cuddles up to her man at the star-studded bash.

It comes after kids TV star, Fearne, spoke about her life without Jesse on BBC Breakfast this week. Admitting things hadn’t been easy, she discussed the challenges she’s faced over the past year, including health issues.

Speaking candidly to hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent about an operation she had in December last year to remove two benign jaw tumours, she also discussed her recovery process, returning to work, and receiving support from fellow celebrity Davina McCall.

“It was the end of last year, it ended up being one benign tumour and a couple of lymph nodes that had to come out with it,” Fearne began. “But I’ve recovered well and I’m feeling good, and very grateful I think as well. “

Reflecting on her recent time away from the spotlight, Fearne said: “I think it was like a little pressing pause moment, which was no bad thing. It’s so rare that I take off any time and I had to properly rest and recover; it went quite quickly.

“I’m definitely back in the swing of things now. “

The timing of Fearne’s operation coincided with the news of her separation from Jesse, son of Rolling Stones icon, Ronnie.

The couple, who had been together for a decade, tied the knot in 2014.

In a heartfelt statement issued in December through X, Fearne announced: “It is with a heavy heart that I let you all know that Jesse and I are ending our marriage.

“Our priority has been, and will always be, our children. We please ask that you respect the privacy of our family at this time. “

Suryavanshi, 14, hits record 52-ball ton v England U19s

Fourth youth one-day international, Worcester

India 363-9 (50 overs): Suryavanshi 143 (78), Malhotra 129 (121)

England: Yet to bat

Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi hit the fastest century on record in youth one-day internationals in a remarkable 143 for India against England at Worcester.

Suryavanshi, who shot to fame by becoming the youngest player and century-maker at the Indian Premier League earlier this year, reached three figures in just 52 deliveries in a stunning display of boundary hitting.

The opener crashed 13 fours and 10 sixes in his 78 deliveries to power his side to 363-9.

His straight-hitting off pace and spin was particularly devastating but he also slashed cuts and heaved away sweeps.

The previous fastest century in youth ODIs was a 53-ball effort by Pakistan’s Kamran Ghulam against England in 2013.

Suryavanshi, who scored 86 in the third ODI earlier this week and 45 and 48 in the first two matches of the series, shared a partnership of 219 with number three Vihaan Malhotra for the second wicket.

Malhotra made a comparatively sedate 129 from 121 balls.

‘India keen to shield teenager’ – analysis

by BBC Sport journalist Matthew Henry

This is the latest eye-catching moment for a player who shot to superstardom earlier this year.

Yes, it is only a youth international but Suryavanshi is the youngest player in either squad by two-and-a-half years. He has looked at least a level or two above the rest.

Amid all of the glitz and glamour, Suryavanshi became the youngest player to score a century in any top-level men’s T20 at the IPL in April.

As a result, when he travelled to the UK for this tour, he was stopped for selfies in the airport and on the plane from India.

He appears destined to go onto big things but India are understandably cautious and want to manage the attention he receives.

The teenager has been shielded from media opportunities while it is understood there have been countless offers for big-money sponsorship deals.

There are areas to improve. His fielding has looked weak on this tour, which is to be expected given his age.

Supporters of banned Palestine Action group arrested at London protest

Police have arrested protesters in London for supporting activist group Palestine Action, which was banned at midnight in the United Kingdom.

“Officers have arrested more than 20 people on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act 2000. They have been taken into custody. Palestine Action is a proscribed group and officers will act where criminal offences are committed,” the Metropolitan Police wrote on X on Saturday.

Campaign group Defend Our Juries said in a press release that 27 people, including a priest and a number of health professionals, had been arrested for offences under the Terrorism Act.

They were holding cardboard signs, saying: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action. ”

Passersby reacted to the arrests as the police intervened in the demonstration at noon.

“Met Police, you are puppets of the Zionist state” and “leave them alone”, they were quoted as shouting by the Press Association, the British news agency.

Other supporters, not directly involved in the Palestine Action protest, shouted: “Who do you protect? Who do you serve? ” and “British police off our streets. ”

There were further chants of “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” during the incident.

The ban

Police warned on Friday that expressing support for Palestine Action would be a criminal offence after the ban kicked in at midnight.

“This includes chanting, wearing clothing or displaying articles such as flags, signs or logos,” said the force.

A spokesperson for Defend Our Juries said: “We commend the Counter Terrorism police for their decisive action in protecting the people of London from some cardboard signs opposing the genocide in Gaza and expressing support for those taking action to prevent it. ”

The proscription cleared parliament on Thursday, with a court challenge to try to stop it becoming law failing on Friday.

The government announced last week it would ban Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act 2000, days after activists from the group broke into an air force base in southern England.

Two aircraft at the base were sprayed with red paint, causing an estimated 7 million pounds ($9. 55m) in damage.

Four Palestine Action activists were remanded in custody on Thursday after appearing in court over the incident.

Palestine Action has condemned the proscription as an attack on free speech.

The ban will make it a criminal offence to belong to or support the group, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

Black Sabbath LIVE: Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell with Jack Black cameo and Diogo Jota tribute

Ozzy Osbourne is preparing to head on stage as the Prince of Darkness for one final time this evening. The rock icon will be joining his fellow Black Sabbath bandmates at Villa Park in one of the most epic farewell shows in music history.

He will grace the stage alongside Bill Ward, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler as well as the world’s best heavy metal bands for the mega show. It marks a very rare appearance for Ozzy, who first retired from live singing in 2023 because of his numerous surgeries and his Parkinson’s Disease.

However, it didn’t put off his desire to get back on stage for his thousands of fans. “As you may all know, four years ago, this month, I had a major accident, where I damaged my spine,” he said on social media.

“My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage. My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions, and most recently, groundbreaking Cybernics (HAL) Treatment, my body is still physically weak. ”

The Back To The Beginning supershow will include sets from Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool, Gojira, Anthrax, Lamb Of God, Halestorm, Mastodon and Rival Sons.

An all-star super-group will be playing, with The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello, Megadeth’s David Ellefson, and Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst taking to the stage.

Ozzy’s health struggles

Ozzy has been through it in the past few decades and after fully embracing the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle in his earlier years, his health has taken a hit.

It began more than 20 years ago, when in 2003, he broke his neck after falling off a quad bike leading to some extensive back surgery and metal rods being put down his spine. In 2020, the singer also announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s around a year before.

But despite his setbacks, and his worsening condition, wife Sharon claims his voice is as good as ever. Read more here.

‘A way to say thank you’

Ozzy revealed the reasons behind doing today’s show stemmed from him wanting to give back to his fans. In an interview with Premier Comms before the show, the rocker said he viewed the set as a chance to “say thank you to my fans for always supporting me and being there for me”.

Pint prices revealed…

Oasis fans may not be happy, but the rockers have got a much better deal when it comes to the prices they’re paying for their pints.

A pint of Carlsberg or Somersby Apple Cider is setting back Black Sabbath fans £6. 50, which is slightly better than the eye-watering £8. 20 at Oasis’ reunion show in Cardiff this weekend.

Pre-mixed spirits are coming in at £7. 50 while Coke Zero, Sprite Zero and Fanta Zero are setting fans back £4. 50. Wine, with the options of white, red or rose, are £7.

Diogo Jota tribute

Yungblud’s guitarist has paid tribute to footballer Diogo Jota by wearing a number 20 Liverpool shirt on stage. In a touching moment, the guitarist showed the number 20 shirt, which Jota wore.

The Premier League footballer and his younger brother Andre Silva both died in a devastating car crash near Zamora close to Spain’s north-west border with Portugal. The tragic incident occurred just days after Jota’s marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso – who had to identify her husband and his brother after the crash.

Fans flock from around the world for final show

Black Sabbath fans from around the world managed to secure tickets for the sell-out show in Birmingham to bid farewell to Ozzy.

A Brazilian fan travelled in from Stockholm to be part of the historic gig and told the Mirror: “We flew here to see Black Sabbath. Sabbath and Ozzy is my favourite. It was my first concert in my life so have the nostalgia feeling. “

Another woman, who is from Estonia and now living in Chesterfield, added: “I saw Ozzy 10 years ago for the first time at Hellfest in France. It’s the first time for my mum. Can’t wait to have a blast. “
