LeBron James staying with Lakers despite trade rumours: Report

Despite an off season of rumours and speculation, LeBron James is expected to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2025-26 basketball season, The Athletic has reported.

The Lakers and James have not engaged in talks about a trade or buyout, and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer is expected to report to camp with the Lakers this autumn, per the report published on Wednesday. There haven’t been any signs, either, that James wants out.

James picked up his $52.6m option last month to return for an eighth season with the Lakers.

He will be returning to a team this time around on which, for the first time in his career, he is the second option. Luka Doncic, acquired in a stunning trade from the Dallas Mavericks in February, is expected to be the centrepiece for Los Angeles in the upcoming season.

Apparently fuelling the trade or buyout rumours is a statement made by James’s longtime agent, Rich Paul, last month that included this line, “We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career.”

Trading James, given his salary, would be difficult since NBA trades must be for players with contracts of similar value due to the salary cap.

The Lakers, according to The Athletic, also are reluctant to take on a player earning in the $50m range if he has additional years on the contract. The Lakers will be free of James’s $52.6m player option once his contract expires at the end of the upcoming season.

James, 40, is entering his record-setting 23rd NBA season. He has played in 1,562 regular-season games and is 50 shy of breaking Hall of Fame member Robert Parish’s NBA record.

James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists in 70 games in 2024-25 to rank in the top 22 in each category. The Lakers forward also finished sixth in most valuable player (MVP) voting.

He is a 21-time All-Star, four-time league MVP and four-time NBA champion. He has scored a record 42,184 regular-season points, and 50,473 in the regular season and playoffs combined.

James entered the NBA as an 18-year-old after being selected number one in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He turns 41 in December.

Love is back in the air for Tasha Ghouri following her break up from former Love Island flame Andrew Le Page. And she has sent her new man a sweet compliment as he celebrates turning 30 years old.

The Strictly runner-up, 26, took to social media to share a gushing post in his honour. She had recently gone public with her relationship with YouTuber Cam Whitnall. Now, the big cat lover shared an image of himself smiling behind two big balloons showing his age.

He wrote on the post for his milestone birthday: “Life at 30. Still wild. Just slightly more endangered. Thank you so much for all the lovely birthday messages everyone! Grateful for the people, places and wild moments that have shaped the last three decades.

“Here’s to the next 30 years… for conservation, rescue and for giving wildlife the future it deserves.”

Tasha sweetly responded in the comments section, referencing his love of animals and work as the managing director of The Big Cat Sanctuary. She wrote: “Happy bday dr dolittle!”

And Tasha was far from the only one sending sweet birthday wished. Strictly’s Karen Hauer and broadcaster Kate Lawler also sent well wishes on his post.

The birthday update comes days after Tasha and Cam were spotted looking very close over the weekend. The duo were seen also holding hands on a sweet day out at Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place festival at Gunnersbury Park. Tasha was wearing a short white dress with black cowgirl boots, complete with tassels.

Cam donned an all back look for the occasion, while also sporting white Nike trainers. There was no hiding their connection as they walked hand in hand and wrapped their arms around each other.

Previous reports say the reality TV star fell for Cam due to his drive and ambition in his career. It’s thought the duo have been dating for a little over a month.

Speaking to the Sun after their appearance, a source said: “She met him after moving close to where he lives and they connected on social media. They were all over each other at the Happy Place Festival where Tasha was giving a talk.”

They added: “Cam was in the audience and was grinning at her as she spoke with Fearne. It’s clear there’s a real spark between them.”

In recent weeks, both Andrew and Tasha have revealed their hope to “move on” from their relationship woes. In recent social media posts, the pair both expressed their wishes. In separate statements shared on their Instagram stories at the weekend, the exes also cooled any rumours of a feud.

Noel Gallagher goes unnoticed as he rides London tube amid Oasis reunion

An Oasis fan didn’t realise they caught Noel Gallagher getting off the tube in London in a casual video they were filming

One lucky Oasis fan was lost for words after realising the person ‘photobombing’ the video they were filming on the London underground was actually Noel Gallagher. With Liam and Noel putting behind their feud to reunite for a worldwide tour, the UK have been absorbing all things Oasis since they kicked off their tour earlier this month.

And now that the brothers have a little break before returning to Heaton Park in Manchester for their next set of gigs, they’ve been up to their own thing. One Oasis fan unknowingly filmed Noel getting off the train carriage at Paddington’s tube station while trying to get casual footage.

“POV: You’re getting the tube from Paddington – Baker St and bump into NOEL GALLAGHER… Wait for it…,” they captioned the video, which had them panning the camera from the ‘Paddington’ sign around to the tunnel where the trains drive through.

When one train finally arrived, the doors opened before Noel walked off rocking classic sunglasses, a blue t-shirt and jeans. The TikTok user didn’t realise it was Noel until they watched the footage back.

Fans rushed to the comment section to share their excitement, with one user writing: “How in the bizzare world? That’s strangely normal,” while another posted: “He’s a man of the peopleeee.”

One unconvinced fan asked: “Why were you filling in anticipation? Did you get a tip off?” before the owner of the video said: “My husband was already recording me getting on the tube for a reel, as I was there on a business trip. Total coincidence that Noel photobombed.”

Another added: “Deffo Noel – the gold dog tag from Tiffany he always wears is a giveaway.”

Oasis have made a triumphant return to Manchester playing two shows at the weekend with a third gig tonigh before two more shows at the weekend.

After that the band play Wembley as well as dates in Edinburgh and Croke Park in Dublin. The band will then embark on a world tour.

Ahead of their third Manchester show huge steel fences were erected around an area of Manchester’s Heaton Park to stop ticketless Oasis fans from watching.

Councillor John Hacking told ticketless fans of the recently reunited group to head to the city centre to enjoy “a real party atmosphere” instead of hanging around the park.

Hacking explained: “The steps being taken ahead of the next concert regretfully mean the distant view of the large screens behind the event stage will no longer be there”.

The council’s hand was “forced” into placing the fences to protect the trees, livestock, grass and the safety of the park, Hacking claimed.

‘Barcelona’s new 10 – Lamine Yamal turns 18 and takes centre stage’

“Comparisons are odious,” wrote Cervantes in Don Quijote. Nowhere is that more true than in football – a world fuelled by statistics, noise, and the endless urge to crown the next Lionel Messi.

Lamine Yamal has heard it all before.

When the question came – again – he didn’t bite.

“I don’t compare myself with him,” he said. “I don’t want to compare myself with anyone, and even less with Messi. That’s something I leave to you.

“He is the best player in football’s history. I am making my own way.”

So, what are we doing talking about Messi in a Lamine Yamal piece? It is to create some context, because there are some stunning statistics.

Lamine Yamal turned 18 on Sunday by which time he had played 106 first-team games – 73 in La Liga, 23 in Europe, six in the Copa del Rey and four others.

It has now been confirmed Lamine Yamal will wear Barcelona’s iconic number 10 next season as he follows in the footsteps of Messi.

Both started wearing number 19, followed by 10 – a number donned by some of the club’s greats.

The names read like a who’s who of footballing royalty. Messi, of course, Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Romario, Hristo Stoichkov, Juan Roman Riquelme, Pep Guardiola and Laszlo Kubala.

Out of respect, Lamine Yamal did not entertain conversations about it while Ansu Fati, the previous wearer, was still at the club, but he has since moved to Monaco.

Even before Barcelona announced anything officially, there has been a dramatic surge in sales of said shirt. That commercial value will only grow now.

Who is Lamine Yamal?

There are a number of errors and misconceptions about the player, not least the fact that despite being discussed and written about endlessly, the majority of the media and fans continue to get his name wrong.

His full name is Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana-Nasraoui. Like so many players in La Liga – think Xavi, Pedri, Joselu etc – he identifies on the pitch by his first name which is not just Lamine, nor is it just Yamal, it is Lamine Yamal.

He was named after two men, Lamine and Yamal, who helped his parents (Equatorial Guinean Sheila Ebana and Moroccan Mounir Nasraoui) pay rent during a financially difficult period before his birth.

By way of thanks, they made good on the promise to name their son in their honour.

Much has been made of the forward’s holidays, his off-pitch life, and the perceived risk of distraction. Apparently he is a teenager that enjoys himself. Go figure!

More worrying is the quiet implications of that accusation. The reality is far less dramatic. He goes out, like most 17-year-olds, especially during holidays.

He is very close to his family and enjoys time with friends (he visited Neymar in Brazil). He’s a healthy, responsible teenager. He is teetotal and a practising Muslim who has spoken openly about his observance of Ramadan.

And while there aren’t photos of him training during summer mornings, that’s largely because there’s no public access. Behind the scenes, the work is still happening. He enjoys himself, there are fewer rules and obligations than during the season, but he doesn’t switch off. There is balance.

So how good is he?

The statistics are remarkable, especially when you consider his age. And they keep improving.

Since making his debut, he has won two La Liga titles, although he featured just once during Barcelona’s 2022–23 title-winning campaign. Since then, he has missed only four league games across the past two seasons. He has also lifted the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. On the international stage, he has already won the European Championship with Spain.

He wants everything: to lead, to score, to win. But there’s a calmness to his ambition. He doesn’t just dream of being better, he works at it.

Crucially, he knows he’s not there yet. That balance between confidence and humility is what allows him to play with such freedom, as if still in the schoolyard.

It all begins at home. His parents, often discussed publicly but rarely understood, play a crucial role in keeping his feet on the ground. His father is firm, tells it as it is, and is enjoying his son’s success very publicly – perhaps too exposed at the public judgement.

His mother and grandmother offer a different kind of strength – consistent, loving, and deeply rooted in values. They are the quiet force that underpins everything.

That’s how he appears not a teenager overwhelmed, but a boy enjoying the game. It’s not down to ignorance of pressure. It’s a mindset, one that believes the best is still to come, and if it doesn’t arrive, he’ll keep chasing it.

Before the Champions League final he said: “At my age, few have played as many games for a club like Barca, and that’s what I value most. Playing at this level and for a club like Barca isn’t something that anyone can do.”

When asked about the pressure or fear of failure involved with playing at the top level, he said: “I left that fear behind on the pitch in Mataro a while ago.”

He was referring to his old pitch in the district of Rocafonda, where he played as a kid with others three, four and more years older.

His improvement last season was astonishing.

He went from seven goals and nine assists in 23-24 to 18 goals and 25 assists last campaign.

Easy to understand therefore why the boy from Rocafonda has had his contract recently renewed until 2031 with a reported base wage of 15m euro (£12.9m) per season, rising to 20m euro with performance-related bonuses plus a buyout clause set at a jaw-dropping 1bn euro, a figure clearly put in place to repel potential suitors.

But he would be the first to admit he is still a work in progress, that the best is still to come. He still needs to focus more on honing that killer instinct on goal

It’s worth remembering that two of Lamine Yamal’s biggest moments in 2025 – against Inter in the semi-finals of the Champions League and the Nations League final against Portugal – both ended in defeat.

Those close to him wanted to see his reaction as everything to that point had gone in an upwards trajectory.

Barcelona’s dramatic exit was painful for any player, more so for a 17-year-old. But his response was revealing. He was visibly hurt, yes, but once back in the dressing room, his mindset shifted quickly.

He started thinking about what was still left to win. The league, the cup. And the knowledge that the Champions League would come around again next year. That instinct – to refocus, to move forward – says everything about him.

One Barcelona executive remarked recently: “He’s just a kid – even if you forget that because of how he behaves on the pitch.”

Off the pitch? You see the teenager more often.

Spain team-mate Dani Olmo once described the national team environment as a “schoolyard” atmosphere – all jokes, energy, and youthful confidence.

It’s an environment where Lamine Yamal thrives. He gets along with everyone (that is why he is the team DJ), brings mischief without overstepping, and knows when to pull back.

Maybe he learned from the reaction in the group when, playing with Barcelona’s under-18s, he wore a Morocco shirt the day after Spain was knocked out of the World Cup by his dad’s nation.

Lamine YamalGetty Images

His relationship with new Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has been smooth. He may be cheeky, but he’s always respectful. One team-mate simply calls him “a character”.

His inner circle occasionally wishes he’d expose himself to the spotlight a little less. Yet almost everyone agrees on one thing: he has the courage and personality to handle it.

That, more than the dribbles, more than the comparisons, is what makes Lamine Yamal unique. Not just that he plays like he’s still in the schoolyard, but that even as the world begins to crown him, that’s still where he feels most at home.

But that tension – between who he is and what he projects – runs through his entire story. At times, he reminds you of his age. After one match, when asked about criticism of his attitude, he responded: “As long as I’m winning, they can’t say anything.” A defiant moment, perhaps, but also an honest one.

Lamine Yamal is a player in constant evolution. Not satisfied with what he already has, he’s motivated by what he doesn’t. His eyes are firmly on the future: more goals, more strength, more consistency.

But he isn’t trying to bypass the process. He knows there’s more to learn.

Trump repudiates draft letter to fire US Fed chair Powell

United States President Donald Trump has denied plans to fire US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, after media reports that the president is likely to do so soon triggered a drop in stocks and the dollar, and a rise in Treasury yields.
Such reports are not true, Trump said on Wednesday.

“I don’t rule out anything, but I think it’s highly unlikely unless he has to leave for fraud,” Trump said, a reference to recent White House and Republican lawmaker criticism of cost overruns in the $2.5bn renovation of the Fed’s historic headquarters in Washington, DC.

Stocks pared losses and Treasury yields pared declines after Trump’s comments, which also included a now-familiar barrage of criticism against the Fed chair for not cutting interest rates, calling him a “terrible” chair.

Trump did talk with some Republican lawmakers about firing Powell, he said, but said he is more conservative about his approach to the question than they are.

Trump floated the idea and showed a draft of a letter firing Powell in a meeting with around a dozen Republican lawmakers on Tuesday night, according to The New York Times and Bloomberg News, citing unnamed sources, as the president polled them if he should and indicated that he likely would. The president has acknowledged the poll, but has denied that there was such a letter.

In response to a question about whether the White House has given any indication that the president intends to try to fire Powell, a Fed official pointed to Powell’s public statements that he intends to serve out his term.

As Trump downplayed the possibility of firing Powell, though, Republican Senator Thom Tillis used his time on the floor of the Senate to deliver a spirited defence of an independent Fed, which economists say is the linchpin of US financial and price stability.

“There’s been some talk about potentially firing the Fed chair,” said Tillis, a member of the Senate Banking Committee that oversees the Fed and confirms presidential nominations to its board. Subjecting the Fed to direct presidential control would be a “huge mistake,” he said.

“The consequences of firing a Fed chair, just because political people don’t agree with that economic decision, will be to undermine the credibility of the United States going forward, and I would argue if it happens, you are going to see a pretty immediate response, and we’ve got to avoid that,” Tillis said.

Adding pressure

Powell, who was nominated by Trump in late 2017 to lead the Fed and then nominated for a second term by Democratic President Joe Biden four years later, is serving a term that goes through May 15, 2026.

Trump has been attacking Powell on a near-daily basis for not cutting interest rates. Powell has said the interest rate decisions will be driven by data and the Fed is in a wait-and-watch mode as it see how Trump’s several tariff policies impact the economy.

Bharat Ramamurti, senior adviser for economic strategy at the American Economic Liberties Project and former deputy director of the National Economic Council, in emailed comments, said that it is better for the US economy to have an independent bank that sets interest rates apart from politics.

“What’s going on under the surface here is that Donald Trump has a political problem. He came to office promising to lower costs for people, and what’s happened is that his own economic agenda has made it basically impossible for the Fed to lower interest rates.”

Last week, the White House intensified its criticism of how the Fed is being run when the director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, sent Powell a letter saying Trump was “extremely troubled” by cost overruns in the $2.5bn renovation of its historic headquarters in Washington.
