‘He Led With Restraint,’ Tinubu Leads Tributes In Special FEC Session For Buhari

At a special meeting of the Federal Executive Council in honor of former president Muhammadu Buhari, held on Thursday at the State House in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu delivered the tributes.

President Tinubu was present at Buhari’s burial on Tuesday in Daura, where he passed away after he died in a London hospital on Sunday.

Other government officials, including the president’s children, members of the Federal Executive Council, the president of Nigeria, and the president’s children, also attended the special FEC meeting.

Tinubu praised the former president for carrying the burdens of leadership without a complaint, claiming that he had restrained the nation and exercised the presidency’s dignity.

The President praised his predecessor for standing “first among soldiers in battle, first among citizens in peace, and first, without pretense or flattery, in the hearts of his fellow citizens.”

His true greatness was revealed in the quiet and unadorned settings of his private life: pious without show, just without cruelty, humane without sentimentality, temperate without coldness, and sincere without guile.

His example guided all who came across him, being upright in posture and spirit, dignified in bearing, and commanding in his own presence. It continues to endure.

He noted that Buhari was kind without condescension and respectful to his peers without pretence, and to those who served under him.

“And he was unfailingly tender, loyal, and good to those who he loved most dearly. His life was both a refuge for virtue and a rebuke for vice. According to him, the purity of his private life gave a shining example of the discipline and moral character of his public service.

The President continued, “Even in death, he maintained the serenity that defined him in life: a quiet submission to the will of God.” Nigeria lost a lot of people to this. This man caused the nation’s current mourning.

“President Buhari lived a life of austerity,” he said. He remained straight throughout the entire ramrod, unmoved by the temptation to use force, unfazed by applause, and unafraid of the loneliness that frequently strikes those who practice what is right rather than what is accepted. His righteousness never made an appearance in public; it was quiet courage. His acts of patriotism were more evident than his words.

His life traces the course of the journey of Nigeria. Before gaining its independence, he joined the fight to save our country. He fought both in battle and in harmony with vigilance and tenacity, as if he had been given the task of keeping tabs on Nigeria.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee, led by Governor Dikko Radda and the Secretary of the Federation’s Government, George Akume, thanked Tinubu for organizing a dignified state funeral for the former president in less than 48 hours.

He once more condoled Aisha Buhari, her children, the entire Buhari family, the state’s government and people, as well as those who knew and cherished the former president.

President Buhari’s family members, who have spent more than 50 years in public service, will remain in our hearts. We pay tribute to his service, reflect on his legacy, and ask for his soul’s tranquil repose, Tinubu continued.

According to Denise Richards, Aaron Phypers threatened to kill her. According to reports in the USA, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills received a temporary restraining order against her ex, giving new details about their breakup.

Following a six-year union, the couple filed for divorce earlier this month. They cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of their split, and listed July 4 as the official separation date. In addition, Phypers is asking the court to grant him spousal support from Denise, 54.

New court records now reveal Denise’s claim that she was afraid of dying after Aaron allegedly threatened to kill her. The reality star said, “Throughout our relationship, Aaron would frequently violently choke me, violently squeeze my head with both hands, tightly squeeze my arms, violently slap me in my face and head, aggressively slam my head into the bathroom towel rack, threaten to kill me, hold me down with his knee on my back, and hack into my laptop and phone and download all of my text messages.

She continued in the filings, “none of which ever happened” that Aaron would frequently threaten to break her jaw and ask her to stay with him if he needed help.

She continued, “Aaron has at least three concussions. Aaron has informed me that he left recording equipment at his townhouses and in hotel rooms to record me. Denise claimed on July 4 that Aaron repeatedly approached her face, calling her a “c***, w***er” and “piece of s**t.”

She claims that Aaron and his father allegedly hit her on the back of her hat with the back of his hand, causing her hat to fall to the floor after they both got close to her face and yelled hateful words at her once more the following day. Aron has not responded to the accusations made against him.

He claims in his spousal support documents that he has no independent income and estimates that Denise earns more than $250,000 per month from OnlyFans, TV work, brand deals, and public appearances.

Aaron has requested that Aaron keep both of their property’s assets and liabilities separate. His power tools, a motorcycle, and a sports car are said to be included in the request. More details about their break-up have recently surfaced, with it being claimed that “he divorced her after she last wanted another divorce.”

Aaron “wanted to hurt her,” he has. She’s cutting off his cash flow, according to a source who recently told MailOnline, because he’s the last person who wants to be broke.

Following the claims, Aaron has since told TMZ the claims are “not true”. He said: “I have all the details. She is creating a story to save her image reporting a conjured up story when I have all the real evidence.”

Switzerland inspired by 2010 World Cup win before Spain quarter-final

Spain v Switzerland

Date: Friday 18 July Kick-off: 20:00 BST Venue: Wankdorf Stadium, Bern

Pia Sundhage has been using footage of Switzerland men’s historic win over Spain at the 2010 World Cup to inspire her women’s side before their quarter-final against the same opponents at Euro 2025.

Hosts Switzerland, ranked 23rd in the world, scored a stoppage-time goal against Finland in their final group-stage game to squeeze into last eight.

World champions Spain, meanwhile, are the top-ranked team in the tournament and were already favourites to win Euro 2025 before they swept past Portugal, Belgium and Italy to top Group B.

Switzerland boss Sundhage, who has previously managed the United States, Sweden and Brazil, said facing Spain on Friday will be the “biggest ever” challenge of her managerial career.

However, the 65-year-old believes her side can surprise Spain in the same way the men’s team did in South Africa in 2010, when they held on for a 1-0 win after Gelson Fernandes scored in the 52nd minute.

Sundhage said the idea to watch videos of that victory came from former Arsenal and Switzerland defender Johan Djourou, who is part of her staff.

“We tried to share stories, that is what life is all about,” she said. “That was an idea from Johan. He was talking about it in an emotional way.

Swiss defender Noelle Maritz said re-watching videos of the win – the men’s first against Spain – gave her “goosebumps”.

“This is football and we have to score one more goal than the opponent and believe in ourselves. We hope we are able to win against Spain like the men’s team did,” Maritz added.

Against Spain in 2010, Switzerland won despite facing 24 shots against a team that went on to win the tournament.

Asked if her side will need the same luck in Bern, Sundhage replied: “We will not win against Spain if we are not lucky. But you need to create your own luck.”

Spain are ranked second in the world and won the World Cup in 2023, but they have exited the Euros in the quarter-finals at each of the past three tournaments.

With their only better performance being in 1997, where they reached the semi-finals, manager Montse Tome said her side have a chance to “write history” against Switzerland.

“I think it’s a beautiful challenge for the Spanish team, for the staff, for the players,” said Tome.

“It is a challenge, it is big to have the possibility to get to the semi-finals and write history.

‘The last stand for the hosts’

Rachel Brown-Finnis' Euro 2025 predictions graphic

I am co-commentating on this game, and the disparity between Spain and Switzerland feels like the biggest of any of the four quarter-finals.

Spain are clear favourites here, for a reason. The world champions are going to win and probably score a few more goals, after hitting 14 in the group stage, so Switzerland really just need to try and hold out for as long as they can.

There have already been big celebrations here because the Swiss have got through to a knockout stage of a Euros for the first time.

So, this tournament has already been a success for them on the pitch as well as off it, with record digital viewing figures and the attendances at games.

This feels like the last stand for the hosts because they won’t keep Spain out, but I am going to say the Swiss will score too – that is unlikely to happen, but I really want them to end these Euros with something to smile about.

Slovenia bars far-right Israeli cabinet ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich

Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, both of the far-right members of the Israeli government, are prohibited from entering Slovenia.

Tanja Fajon, the foreign minister, declared the pair’s personae non-gratae on Thursday, citing a first for a member state of the European Union.

She said, “We are innovating.”

The Slovenian government accused Israel’s Ben-Gvir and Smotrich of using “their genocidal statements” to incite “extreme violence and serious violations of Palestinian human rights.”

Both cabinet ministers “publicly support the forced eviction of Palestinians, the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and the call for violence against the civilian Palestinian population,” the statement continued.

The Israeli government didn’t immediately respond.

For their hard-line stance on the occupied West Bank and the expansion of illegal settlements, Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, two key coalition partners in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration, have received international criticism.

Smotrich, who resides in a settlement in the West Bank, has urged the territory’s annexation and support for the expansion of settlements.

International law prohibits settlements. Israel has disputed the International Court of Justice’s ruling from July that Israel’s continued presence in occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful.

Smotrich has previously called for “total annihilation” in Gaza and recommended the destruction of a Palestinian town in the West Bank. Ben-Gvir had a sincere rebuke of Baruch Goldstein, an Israeli who killed 29 Palestinians in Hebron in 1994. Israeli courts have found him guilty of “incitement to racism” numerous times.

Netanyahu depends heavily on the two and their political parties’ support to keep his government together, despite the ministers’ positions.

Natasa Pirc Musar, Slovenia’s president, stated to the European Parliament on May 21 that Israel must “demonize the genocide” in Gaza.

After EU and foreign ministers did not agree on a joint action against Israel over allegations of human rights violations, Fajon stated that Slovenia and Slovenia had decided to take the action at a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday.

Without going into specifics, she claimed that other measures were being developed.

The two Israeli ministers were accused of inciting violence against Palestinians by the governments of Norway, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada in June.

Wolves induct Jota into club’s Hall of Fame

Wolves have inducted former forward Diogo Jota into their Hall of Fame “in a tribute that honours both his remarkable achievements for the club and the deep impact his passing has had on the footballing world”.

The Portugal international and his 25-year-old brother Andre Silva, who was also a footballer, died in a car crash on 3 July in the Spanish province of Zamora.

Jota moved to Wolves from Atletico Madrid in July 2017 – in a deal which was initially on a season-long loan and then made permanent – before going on to join Liverpool in 2020.

He scored 44 goals in 131 appearances for Wolves and was a key player when they won the Championship title in 2017-18 to earn promotion into the Premier League.

Wolves players and coaching staff have been among those to have contributed to the vast amount of tributes to Jota and Silva outside their Molineux stadium.

The club have now “moved swiftly to make this rare and heartfelt decision” to induct Jota into their Hall of Fame, which is run independently by a committee.

Wolves said such an honour is “typically the result of detailed discussions over many weeks or months” but, in Jota’s case, it was a unanimous decision considering “the remarkable legacy Diogo leaves behind”.

“There is such a feeling of sadness and disbelief around this awful tragedy that we wanted to make this tribute of our own as soon as we could,” said Wolves Hall of Fame chairman and club vice-president John Richards.

“Like everyone else, we’ve been stunned by events, and we remember what a wonderful player Diogo was for Wolves during that unforgettable promotion season under [manager] Nuno [Espirito Santo] and our early years back in the Premier League.

“So many fans across the game – especially in Portugal after he helped them win the Nations League this summer – are feeling his loss deeply. We saw no reason to delay this decision.

“We hope it will bring a little comfort to those who were close to Diogo and Andre, and we trust Wolves supporters will understand that this gesture is made with real love and admiration, and also fully justified.”
