India struggle in England Test decider with captain Gill run out

After the rain-hit opening Test match against India at The Oval, England prevailed as the visitors battled to 204-4 with all of their big guns cheaply and needed to win.

England worked hard on their breakthroughs on Thursday, and they will be happy to have lost Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and KL Rahul, who have recently put them to shame. However, captain Gill gave his wicket a suicidal run-out.

Even with only four days left, India’s chances of putting themselves in a position to force a victory already seem extremely slim.

Even without injured captain Ben Stokes, England’s all-seam attack had a competitive advantage despite the overcast morning conditions.

As stand-in captain Ollie Pope finally got on the right side of a DRS review after 14 unsuccessful appeals last year, Recalled Gus Atkinson dragged Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw for two as stand-in captain.

Before turning in Chris Woakes for 14, Rahul, who had scored more than 500 runs in each of his first four games, appeared to be generally untroubled as India drew to lunch with a score of 72-7.

Gill, who had four centuries to his name in the series and had an average of more than 90 runs, mysteriously set off for a nonexistent single as bowler Atkinson had time to move the ball to his right before putting the bat down the stumps.

Gill had all kinds of records in his sights on the day, but he only managed 21 as his 743-run total placed him ahead of Garfield Sobers of the West Indies (722 in 1966) as the visiting captain with the highest total runs scored in a series in England, either for or against the hosts.

A wayward Josh Tongue, whose first over was nine balls and went for 12 runs, finally found his line to nip Sai Sudharsan’s bat for 38 after a delayed rain-delayed restart.

With their big-hitters all gone or, in the case of Rishabh Pant, injured, Tongue repeated the feat soon after and removed Jadeja, who had a superb unbeaten century in his team’s rearguard action in the fourth test for nine. India were reeling on 123-5.

Dhruv Jurel was tucked up by Atkinson and then neatly caught by Harry Brook for 19 after overturning an lbw decision against him.

As the impressive Atkinson finished the day with figures of two for 31 off 19 overs, Karun Nair batted calmly to finish with a score of 52 not out, and Washington Sundar, who turned in another centurion last Sunday, was on 19, at the close.

Woakes, who had a serious shoulder injury as he dived heavily to avoid a boundary in the final overs, had a less enjoyable day.

Kate Garraway sells home ‘for over £1 million’ after revealing care debt struggle

Kate Garraway, a host of Good Morning Britain, has previously discussed the expense of caring for her late husband Derek Draper. She is said to have sold a home.

Broadcaster Kate Garraway is said to sold her second home after being left with “excessive unpayable debt” through caring for her late husband Derek Draper. She’s reportedly sold a property in London for £1.5 million recently.

Kate, 58, has previously spoken about the financial impact of having looked after Derek, who died, aged 56, last year. She’s said to have been facing a debt of up to £800,000 for his care and has reportedly been paying off debts related to his company Astra Aspera, which shut down in 2022.

It’s now been reported that Kate has sold her second home, which is said to be in North London. The news comes following speculation over her future on Good Morning Britain amid upcoming changes at ITV.

A flat-sized property in North London, which the Sun described as “heavily mortgaged,” recently sold for £1.5 million, according to the Sun. She continued to use the property as a “financial safety net,” according to a source.

Kate “takes paying off the debts very seriously,” the source told the outlet. “She’s always said she’d go to any lengths to accomplish that. Even if it means she has to lose the apartment she purchased years ago before meeting Derek and before they have a family home together, that is only one of the things that constitutes that commitment. She kept it as a financial safety net that she assumed she wouldn’t need to use it all that quickly, like many others.

Instead, The Daily Mail claims the property was a three-bed townhouse in North London, which it claims is currently being sold. It claims that it has been renting out for £6,750 per month, prior to going on the market.

The Mirror understands that it was a house, rather than a flat, that has been on the market. We also understand that the property has already been sold.

Kate’s home, which she shared with her two children, was reportedly in need of selling last year. However, The Mail suggests that the apparent sale of her second home made this seem to have been avoided.

Derek died in January last year following health issues in recent years, including having been hospitalised for over a year during the Covid pandemic. Kate’s spoken about the cost of his care in the years since he was hospitalised.

In a documentary last year, for example, she said that it was “more than” her salary from ITV. She added: “Unlike the NHS, state-funded social care is only available to people with the highest needs and the lowest means.”

Earlier this year, whilst discussing the challenges she had faced, she said on Good Morning Britain: “One of the overriding ones until he went back into intensive care before he passed away, was dealing with the funding of care. At the time of his death, there were two appeals that hadn’t been heard for funding.

It continued to be pushed back and forth. I was having to pay for the situation in the interim, which is unfortunate because I have an incredible job and are well-paid. What else will people be like if I’m in that position and have an excessive amount of unpayable debt as a result?

Jet2 joins Jess Glynne in slamming White House using viral audio for deportation video

Following singer Jess Glynne’s sharing her thoughts with the White House, the airline has since removed the audio from a Jet2 advertisement from a post earlier this week.

Airline Jet2 has said that it does not endorse a post shared by the White House promoting deportation that includes viral audio from its Jet2holiday advert. It comes after Jess Glynne, whose song features in it, spoke out over the post.

A video that depicts people being handcuffed and escorted onto a plane was included in the post in question, which was shared on X earlier this week. When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 trip to deportation, the title read. Nothing can compare to it”!

The caption references the viral audio, included in the video and the original Jet2 advert, in which voiceover artist Zoë Lister says over Jess’ song Hold My Hand: “Nothing beats a Jet2holiday and right now you can save £50 per person. That’s £200 off for a family of four.” Zoe spoke to the Mirror about the original advert going viral recently.

Following the post, which received a lot of social media attention, Jet2 has now addressed the situation. The holiday destination’s representative said the post was “not endorsed by” them and expressed disappointment.

Our branding has become something of a viral phenomenon this summer, according to a Jet2.com and Jet2holidays spokesperson, who spoke to the PA news agency. Similar to how our holidays are, this has brought a smile to many people’s faces.

They continued, “We are of course aware of a post from the White House social media account.” We are very disappointed to see our brand being used to promote such government policy because this is not in our power in any way.

Although the White House’s position was met with some opposition, it has recently received some negative reviews. Singer-songwriter Jess, who previously reported, responded to it on Tuesday following its upload on X, has also contributed.

Jess wrote, “This post honestly makes me sick,” referring to the song Hold My Hand that appears in both the actual Jet2 advertisement and the post. Never about division or hate, she continued, “My music is about love, unity, and spreading positivity.”

The controversy comes after the Jet2 advertisement’s audio has recently become popular. It’s been used in more than 1.9 million TikTok videos, according to PA, and has become a meme on social media, both domestically and internationally.

According to Zo, who has worked on the Jet2holidays voiceovers for seven years, she was surprised to learn that the audio had gone viral. She made a recent joke about how “the best ad campaign ever appeared”

Zoe and Jess met earlier this month on Capital Breakfast to recreate the radio commercial. Jessica mentioned that she is currently playing her song Hold My Hand at concerts because she believes that Zo’s script’s audience is eager to hear it.

Jess explained to the station, “It’s crazy because I feel like when I do my gigs, I feel like when I go to sing the hook, I feel like they’re waiting for me to go,” “nothing beats a Jet2 holiday.” Although it’s tempting, I need to take this seriously because it’s not a joke.

Unreachable to unplayable – how England had mixed opening day

Josh Tongue had the in-demand Ravindra Jadeja in his sights at the start of the 40th over, which came after two lengthy rain delays, cloudy skies, and a green pitch.

For four wickets, Jamie Smith’s first ball of the over soared past the wicketkeeper. The second was brief, wide, and four times flashy. The third, which snagged away from the left-hander and took the edge, was stunning and on a good length.

From impossible to playable, bizarre to brilliant, from unreachable to impossible.

Three balls that completely encased England as India were held to a score of 204-6 in the first day of the fifth Test at The Oval.

As the sheepish giggle after Jadeja’s wicket suggested, neither Tongue nor India’s batters appeared to be aware of what was about to come next.

Sai Sudharsan had already started the day with a nine-ball over that gave up 11 runs from wides when he had delivered it in a similar delivery four overs earlier, at 107-ball 38.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan described tongue as the bowler I least wanted to face on BBC Test Match Special.

BBC Sport

Even though Tongue was likely to have been the only bowler to have inconsistent numbers, Tongue’s was likely to have been the only one with England’s exhausted quicks.

Late in the day, their fortunes changed from bad to worse, with Ben Stokes suffering from a shoulder injury, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse having been rotated.

Chris Woakes, who was 14 overs into his legs in his fifth Test appearance, sprawled over the boundary rope to save a four, grabbed his shoulder in agony and is unlikely to play a part in the remainder of the match.

England must be wary of overworking him, with Stokes serving as a case study, but Gus Atkinson did impressive when he recovered from a hamstring injury, recording figures of 2-31 from his 19 overs.

India doesn’t punish England’s “liquor of all kinds”

India were unable to assert their dominance when they needed a win to avoid a series defeat, despite England’s unforgiving day.

England’s bowling rate was 28%, the second-lowest for any series innings, and they attacked the stumps with only 12%. However, they also drew 24% of their own shots, which is the series’ highest for day one.

Perhaps it is surprising that India’s minds were somewhat scrambled because of the difficult batting conditions, Tongue’s unpredictable spell at one end, and Atkinson’s economic efforts at the other.

Former England international Sir Alastair Cook claimed on the BBC Test Match Special that “Tongue made India do things they don’t want to do.”

He has bowled a few “absolute jaffas,” according to the bowling industry, but liquorice of all kinds is what we used to call them. You think you’re going to be scoring when you confront someone who is so inconsistent.

You believe there are plenty of chances to score, but the possibility of it being anywhere really aggravates your rhythm. Knowing that he’s not bowling well, I should be following him and he drags you into shots, is that mentality.

India’s tenacious duo of Washington Sundar and Karun Nair won a tight match from 153-6, giving them unwavering control over the top order that the rest of the top order had been lacking.

Given the circumstances and India’s sluggish dismissals, it was a curious day with neither side able to hold onto the momentum for significant lengths.

England, if they’re being brutally honest with themselves, on a pitch with 8mm of grass today, they’ve shown enough seam movement and swing to have preferred to bowl India out, Vaughan continued.
